Everytime I change accounts it installs the Outlook Express shortcuts to the programs folder & the quick launch folder. I have a "Communications" folder that I place this shortcut in, so aside from uninstalling Outlook Express, how do I prevent the creation of the shortcuts for it? I've tried hiding the files, it doesn't work. The programs menu & the quick launch bar shows the shortcut anyways. As always, thanks for your time, - Marker0077

Outlook shortcuts auto-installing, how do I stop it?

I solved the problem, thanks anyways. -
Anyone know of a proggy that allows a drop-down menu for the username portion of the login in Win2k or something similar to the WinXP login window. Thanks for your time.

What is Mozilla Firebird? I didn't know they did a Tweak UI for Win2k. Win2k is has so much stuff missing from it that Win98 has & WinXP has but Win2k doesn't, I just figured they didn't do one. I will look around for it. Marker0077 LATE EDIT: Just checked out Mozilla Firebird - 1 question, what does on online browser have anything to do with what we are discussing here? I checked out X-Setup & Tweak UI, neither one of which allows me to do what I was looking to do in whole but does in part. It's better than nothing I suppose. Thanks for the feedback.

I am an admin again, appearently I was hired back & didn't know it lol. I never should have been fired in the first place but that's another story. Anyways, as far as "being defensive about it already indicates you are well aware that it can be annoying to others" goes, it's really a grey area. We are dealing with 2 different OS's here so the reply for one may have not applied to the other OS. You could post a forward or you could just have 2 posts, it's really six in 1 hand & half dozen in the other. At least this is just how we would look at it in our neck of the forum woods but this is your house, if you'd prefer forwards, that's cool with me. As far as what I am looking to accomplish goes, I want it to be set up so it's like everyone is using 1 account but I need 2 accounts to control what users can/can't do. If I set up shortcuts or change the theme or whatever the case may be, I don't want to have to do the same thing twice for everything, it's just annoying & unneccesary. Unfortunately, I've been getting people who uninstall stuff that shouldn't be uninstalled & installing stuff that shouldn't be installed as well. Sometimes people own up to it, sometimes they don't. The bottom line is I don't want people messing with the system, it's set up the way it is for a reason; So, to remedy the situation I am creating 2 accounts, 1 is an admin account which I will use when I want to install programs & whatnot & the other is for everyone else to use. I am also hoping this will help out with virus's as well. Sometimes we go to sites like astalavista (not altavista) & a screen comes up & says "you must install this in order to download" which is totally not true but the average user will more than likely not know that, well with the settings restricted, installing will not even be an option... hopefully. I haven't tested the restrictions out that extensively.

I need to have 2 accounts, 1 is the admin account & the other is for everyone else but the thing is, when something is done on one account, I want it to be the same for the other. This goes for the start menu, any theme changes, any size changes, anything & everything I want to be the same except the access levels (which is the point of having 2 accounts). Any suggestions? Also, I am posting about this in the Win2k & WinXP forums because the server I have is Win2k but the clients are WinXP. The answer that I get in WinXP may not work in Win2k or vice versa, so please no complaints about the double post. Thanks for your time either way, - Marker0077

I installed the printer on a WinXP system, copied the "Windows\Inf" folder to "WINNT\InfXP" folder (on Win2k OS obviously), then copied the i386 folder that was in the "Driver Cache" folder (which will ONLY BE THERE IF you install the driver in XP first) to the "WINNT\InfXP\i386" folder & voila, works like a charm, bit of a hassle though. Anyways, I thank you for your time though. I will check that site for drivers from now on, I didn't know about it. I did tons of searching on a variety of engines, I'm surprised that site didn't come up.

I have a Panasonic KX-P2135 printer but the drivers for it are Win98/Win3.1 & they do not work in Win2k/WinXP. Now the server we have is Win2k (which is where all the shared resources, shared printers, etc; etc. are) & the clients we have are WinXP. The KX-P2130 printer driver that comes with WinXP works just fine, unfortunately I DO NOT want the printer shared via the clients for a few different reasons. Anyone have any ideas how I can get the WinXP printer driver to Win2k?

I was able to share file resources without having the Files & Printer Sharing service installed, I have yet to test this with printers but I was curious as to why this is even there? Is this for sharing over the internet or what?
-
Yes & No. I just did a bit more testing on this & it does function without the FAPS (File and Printer Sharing) service but not completely. I just re-installed Win2k on the server here & it does not establish new resources, it only allows you to access what has already been established. Either way though, without the FAPS service installed the FAPS is dodgy & that's not cool. I guess I answered my own question, thanks for your time though.

A bit about this LAN system I have a 4 PC LAN system that I am trying to get working. This system used to be run on Win98SE which I knew very well & had no problems with getting to work, however, I decided it was finally about time we got with the times & upgraded everything so that's what I am doing now. The Intel 6x86 is a 100mhz PC (sad but true) & it is what we are using as a server (we don't have any $ to upgrade to new systems so please do not even bring it up). It is running Windows 2000 Professional, not server. It only has 40 megs of RAM & all server OS's require at least 64 megs of RAM. The server serves files, that's it. No PHP serving, no gaming servers, nothing even the least bit complicated - just files (& a program or 2 that I set to 1 user only at one time). The files range from MS Publisher files, MP3 files, & any other documents that get modified. We all share the same Documents folder on the client workstations which is again, stored on the server. So if any of the workstations catch a virus or whatever the case may be (& is forced to go offline), the other workstations still have the data they need access to. The clients all run on Windows XP. They range from 266mhz to 600 mhz, all of which have at least 128 megs of RAM. The old system & the new system When this was Win98SE, I set up IPX/SPX with File & Printer Sharing but not TCP/IP. The server was set up for IPX/SPX only, this way I didn't need a firewall but I recently learned that TCP/IP is faster than the IPX/SPX protocol, so obviously I wouldn't mind the connection being faster; Considering the clock speed on the Intel server is only 100mhz, we can use every little bit we can get to help speed things up. I want this system to be secure though. Unless a user is specifically given permission (LAN or internet), then I don't want them to have access to the shared resources. We only have 2 accounts set up on each computer, the admin & user account - no more, just those 2. The user account is a nerfed account, it can't install new programs or make any big changes in the system (I've had to deal with people uninstalling things that weren't supposed to be & installing things that yet again, weren't supposed to be). The user account is named after the name & model of the PC. So far, I haven't been able to get the LAN working at all in TCP/IP. I am going to mess around with it a bit more but I could really use some help here. Any help would be appreciated. You can post here or you may contact me via any of these instant messaging services. I currently have 3 of the PC's set up specifically for figuring out this networking system; 2 to try & communicate & the third so I may communicate with whomever online. Getting Win2k to network with WinXP - PLEASE HELP
Marker0077 replied to Marker0077's topic in Networking
Actually my problem was I didn't enable NetBIOS over the... whatever it is, it's not TCP/IP it's the other option that's listed there. I never used NetBIOS when I had IPX/SPX enabled with Win98SE so I figured it would be disabled here as well. I do have 2 other questions though, I am going to post them seperately tho so others may answer as well. Thank you for your time though.
