How do I get WinXP drivers in Win2k?

I have a Panasonic KX-P2135 printer but the drivers for it are Win98/Win3.1 & they do not work in Win2k/WinXP. Now the server we have is Win2k (which is where all the shared resources, shared printers, etc; etc. are) & the clients we have are WinXP. The KX-P2130 printer driver that comes with WinXP works just fine, unfortunately I DO NOT want the printer shared via the clients for a few different reasons. Anyone have any ideas how I can get the WinXP printer driver to Win2k?
  2. What's better, a vid card with 32mb AGP or 64mb PCI?
  3. I totally disabled ActiveX in "Internet Options" but now whenever a site tries to use ActiveX, I get this prompt that says "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly." Anyone know how to ditch this pop up message? I get it all the time (even on non-dagerous sites, including these forums) & it's really annoying. FYI, #1 I want to use Internet Explorer, not Opera, not Netscape (lol), or anything else. #2 I have n00bs in this house. If they got prompted with a "HIT OK OR YOUR COMPUTER WILL BLOW UP!!!!" message, they'd hit okay & next thing you know, spyware galore is installed - screw that.
  4. There is no "Users & Passwords" type option in the Control Panel with Win2k DataCenter Server & it makes it come to this screen where I have to hit CTRL+ALT+DEL before I even login - I don't want to deal with any of that. The server normally doesn't even have a monitor hooked up to it, I want to be able to turn the thing on & that's it - everyone can get to the servers resources. Any suggestions?
  5. Alright, so I just installed Office XP 2002 & Publisher XP 2002. Now I am getting this... "The macros in this project are disabled. Please refer to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how to enable macros." Anyone have any ideas?
  6. We have to have Outlook running all the time for reminders & whatnot but we hate having Outlook minimized too, is there anyway to minimize Outlook to the system tray (systray)? We're using Office XP 2002. Thanks for your time either way.

How do I minimize Outlook (Office XP) to systray?

The reminder is a pop-up screen, it has nothing to do with whether it's minimized on the systray or on the main bar. Anyways, I figured out how to minimize it to the systray - much better.

    Resetting CMOS...

So I have this Toshiba laptop right, it belongs to my brother & I'm supposed to be setting it up in WinXP Pro for him & whatnot because my dad might buy it from him (whether he buys it or not, the system still needs to be redone). Anyways, the guy goes on this 2 week vacation & I can't get ahold of him. So I took the laptop apart, pulled what appeared to be the CMOS battery, left it off for 15 minutes & the damn password screen is still there. I tried looking for a CMOS reset jumper on the actual board itself but there aren't any jumpers of any kind as far as I could tell. I also tried a variety of the so called backdoor passwords - nothing works. Any suggestions?

    Resetting CMOS...

The plug will not go in backwards, it's setup similar a plug that you plug into a sound card, not the black ones, the white kind, except these are smaller. They have a plastic tab that prevents it from going in so unless I cut off the tab - it ain't going in backwards. Anyways, I got a hold of my brother & got the password, thanks anyways.

    Resetting CMOS...

I'll try it & let you know, I don't think that will work because of the plug it uses (meaning I don't think it will fit on there backwards) but again, I'll try it & let you know. Thanks either way. Don't suppose you know the new way do ya?
  11. I don't want anyone getting into the server via the actual server itself, I only want people to be able to get into the server via the network only, so I lock the server but the only problem is when I lock the server, no one can access the printer or any of the file resources. Any suggestions?
  12. I just redid 2 of my dad's PC's, both in XP Pro, & I like to setup 2 different accounts - an admin account & a user account. They're supposed to only use the admin account when they want to install a new program or make a system change, etc; etc. Well the only problem is QuickBooks will not function in a "Users" account & I don't want anything other than a "Users" account because I don't like the whole guest account concept & if I upgrade the account to "Power Users" then they can install programs = lame, so I think this way is much better... So, anyone know how to make QuickBooks work in a "Users" account? Thanks for your time either way people, - Marker0077

Can't read email in Outlook Express??!!

You're going to have to know your smtp server & pop email addy & all that kind of stuff, I recommend you call your ISP for help on this matter (I'm guessing that's whom your pop mail is with). Hope this helps, - Marker0077

Guys which of these AV are better?

McAfee is not that great & PC-Cillin is even worse. I highly recommend you going with Norton AntiVirus; It recieved the highest recommendations from PC Magazine. Personally, I use Norton AntiVirus Corporation. There's no CD-Key's to hassle with, it uses less resources than the traditional Norton AntiVirus Pro (which means the computer runs more smoothly) & it uses pretty much the same virus scanning system = much better IMO.

Clients can't access server resources when server is locked.

I don't have a copy of NT4, all I have is Win2k & the Win2k server OS's so should I use Win2k Pro (client OS) or should I use Win2k Standard Server OS? My main thing here is speed. Will the server OS make the networking run faster or is it about the same? Because you need at least 64mb of RAM for the server OS & I think you only need about 8 mb for the standard client Win2k Pro OS. Thanks for your time on this.

I have 3 workstations running off of the 1 server, so I'm a bit confused... should I be using Win2k standard OS or Win2k standard server OS?

    3D Game PC???

If you're talking about real 3D gaming, like playing Quake or Quake based games such as Medal of Honor, Jedi Knight, or hell, the majority of games out there then the clockspeed of your computer is not the only thing you need to worry about, you need to worry about the speed of your video card as well. It's almost just as important. It just depends on what you are looking to do. Most of the games that come out nowadays use 3D graphics which you will need a good vid card for. As for the whole "I don't want DVD's on my PC, that's what my home entertainment center is for", you can pickup video cards that will play on your TV. You can download movies, music, you name it all via your PC & watch them there as well. This is very convenient for music lovers.
  18. I found a way to exclude programs from the recently used programs list & I can't find it again, anyone know where it is?

Excluding items from recent program list

Oh ya & BTW, we're talking about the "Start" menu - not quick launch or anything else.
  20. Marker0077

Excluding items from recent program list

By default, yes it does, at least with XP anyways. You can modify it to not show the recently used programs but it's there by default.
  21. When I go into the "Local Users and Groups" => "Users" => & then I try to change the users group under the users "Member of" it says... "The following error occured while attempting to read the properties for the user Administrator: Access is denied." Any suggestions?
  22. Marker0077

Can't change users group even with admin account...

ya, the problem was a registry entry I modified. I fixed it, thanks anyways.

Clients can't access server resources when server is locked.

To what? Standard Win2k server? The only thing the server serves is printer & various file resources (standard file sharing) - that's it. I was under the impression that using the server OS will make the network run faster & people will be able to get to the files & whatnot faster as well. That's the *only* reason I am using an actual server OS. As for the machine itself, it's an old Pentium 1 (150mhz). It's not the best in the world but it serves it's purpose. I can't upgrade it to the 2004 server OS because it requires 164 megs of ram & this only has 64. Thanks again for your time.

Clients can't access server resources when server is locked.

The OS is Win2k DataCenter Server. For some odd reason they set things up all different then it is with the standard OS's; For example, this thing originally made me do the CTRL+ALT+DEL thing on startup & everytime the thing is locked up. I'm sure this is something similar but I do not find anything about this in the policies so I'm a bit lost atm. Thanks for your time.

    Recycle bin keeps corrupting...

Anyone know what the recycle bin needs to function properly? I tried setting the security to everyone but even that doesn't work. Here's the problem, I use 2 profiles. 1 is for everyone to use (which is a "user" account) & there is an admin account. Well, the recycle bin works fine for 1 account, however, when I switch accounts & delete something, the recycle bin corrupts & is forced to remove everything in it. Any suggestions?
