    cdrom woes

I was hoping somebody could help me. I can't access my cdrw. I'm running Lycoris 3 and every time I click on "auto" or "mnt" the system thinks for a minute, then hangs. If I put a new CD ROM in the drive, it does the same thing. It also does it when I click on the icon in "My Linux System" Can anyone help? Oh- the device is a Samsung. It worked when I first installed Lycoris, but then I downloaded the updates using the update wizard. That's when things began to go awry. But the drive may or may not have been working before this, not sure. Can anyone help?

    total newbie question

Thanks a lot! I'll give it a try. When I use the CD everything else works (haven't tried the printer, though- but I think its listed as compatible) Currently I'm just running an e-Machine 600MH. C: drive is 10 gig and an HP Pavilion monitor (Did I throw this system together, or what?

Sounds like a good way to get started! I have v3.2. Will that work? Also I can't connect to the internet with it. Knoppix says can't query my modem, maybe I need a driver for it- its a Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem. I could just be doing it wrong, too.

    total newbie question

I have tried knoppix and I would like to get more into linux. I was thinking about installing it on my D: drive (518 MB) as I have Windows ME on my C: drive. Is this possible? Can I then have a choice in what OS I run? Are there any good free distributions that I can try out? Thanks for any help.
