  1. Hi everyone, I'm trying to install a new wd usb hard drive without much success. win xp acknowledges it with yhe little sound when I plug it in but says there may be a problem. It shows up in device manager, but with the exclamation point ( yellow )I have upgraded drivers from the install cd And windows\ststem32\ drivers. I have been into the computer management & disk management trying to format & partition it, but it is not recognized at all there. I have been in the bios setup and enabled anything I thought pertained to setting this up. I'm out of ideas after 4 hrs of uninstalling & reinstalling. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

usb external hard drive ( western digital )

Thanks for the reply. No I don't have the usb 2.0 The hard drive says it will detect and run on the usb 1 , just slower.I have taken it to three friends and hooked it up to there systems with the same results everytime. I just bought a new pci card with the usb 2.0 on Ebay. So I will give it a try with that in a few days. Thanks again!

    a safe data partition

I recently tried to upgrade my XP Home edition to XP Pro. About half way through the installation locked up. I waited about a 1/2 hour before I tried to get it going again. I finally rebooted and got it started again, only to have it stall again. at this point I gave up,& would have been happy with what I had before. When trying to restart there wer no options to choose except start XP pro. No XP home , Safe mode , no restore to previous good settings. Nothing but XP Pro At this point I got out the restore disk that came with the computer. I had all my data files backed up on another partition with Partition Magic 8.0 After I used the restore disk my second partion was wiped out, you can guess the rest of this LONG story. FINALLY my question Is how to create a partition that will survive being wiped out if I have to use the restore disk again? Thanks Bob
