  1. With regard to the software called Disk Copy 1.0 from the website link above. After researching there software I contacted there customer support and apparently it DOES NOT allow you to image from an IDE drive and place that image on a SATA drive. Below is a cut and paste from there email. Thanks to whomever posted the link to that free software, unfortunatly it will not help in this current IDE ot SATA image copy delemma. Les Elton ------------------------------------------------------ Hello, We are sorry for this. Compatability question with Windows NT

    Remote control of PC

Just connect ensure both are attached to the internet, run realvnc on your work machine and forward the realvnc port from your office firewall to your office workstation. Then load realvnc on your home machine and access the IP or your office network. The above works really nice but I would recommend implimenting a VPN between home and the office to ensure no one else can do the same. Other solutions are to do the same as above but impliment a dial-up connection between a server on your site and your home workstation. Then run the tcpip protocol over the dialup connection and then realvnc will run over your tcpip connection. Running Realvnc allows only screen shots to be transitted over the tcpip protocol. Word to the wise, running ANYTHING over dialup is slow. Your best and most speedly sollution still is PCAnywhere. You might try relooking at that solution, I have used it lots and found it to be very reliable, as well lots of other folks us PC Anywhere so its a proven solution. Remember you need the server and client part of the software. Both pieces usually ship with a working copy.

  6. You could have also used the special switch in ghost GHOST.EXE -ib This forces a copy of the boot partition information. It works, I ran into the same problem upgrading my 120gig IDE to 320gig IDE. OS was XP sp2 Works as well for any Windows workstation or server based OS, as long as its an NTFS partition. You can also resize that boot partion on the fly, when using Ghost with the -IB switch.
  7. I seem to consistantly run into this similar problem. I have done a number of W2K Pro installs, each time I run SP4 I get strange drive errors. Each time its a fresh download in install, what gives. I like SP4 due to it running faster but I seems everytime the machine dies at some level later with drive errors and eventual failure. Any ideas ? Currently I have all my "running" W2K boxes using SP3 and holding, they are stable right now. All the hardware is differnet. Les

Need suggestion for optimal network setup

Question, You recommend loading DHCP on the W2K server, I was just wondering why ? Is have the DHCP server on the the windows box better than the having it on the firewall hardware box ? Les

    Ghosting with XP corporate

Hi Guys, I do alot of workstation ghosting. We currently use NT4 workstation to satify our business needs. We are see some applications are dropping NT4 support and we will probably need to move to XP or 2003 in the near future. How is XP corporate with being ghosted over somewhat dissimilar hardware ? Does it "correctly" redetect its new hardware and uninstall drivers for undetected hardware. Please assume that the SID's will be changed on each machine. Les
  10. You will probably have ALOT of problems running Windows 2000 Anything with only 64meg of ram on a P150. I would suggest you do ONE of two thing. 1)Buy your self a cheap 2.0 ghz machine for under $300-500 and install windows 2000 server, this will future proof your environment for lots and lots of speed for now and the future. or 2) Buy from Ebay or borrow from a friend a copy of NT Workstation, and set it up on your old P150 with 64meg of ram. It will be slow but you could use your current older hardware. I recommend solution one, as really you will be spending more dollars in time setting up either software than the $300-500 for the new hardware. There really are no other solutions in your scenario. login from command line

Question, I leave our NT server not logged in to prevent unauthorised access. But I would like to "automate" it logging in each evening at 12am as the "backup" user and running ntbackup to backup the entire drive, then logging out. I can automate the backup process via a commandline but can we get NT to login from a commandline command. There doesn't seem to be a login.exe that we could run from a batch file. Any ideas ? Les

w2k sp4 hard drive recognition problem

I have notice similar problems with Windows 2000 SP4, I have decided to deal with using SP3, and the drive problems have not returned. LEs
  13. Hum, interesting. I do ALOT of machine cloning using Norton Ghost and NT4. It seems to not have to many problems with dissimilar hardware as their are only two HAL's, one for the single processor machine and one for the multi procssor machine. NT is not plug and play so you can force whatever drivers you want to run. You just have to remember to change the SID using ghosts ghostwalker program. Win98 cloneing works, but only if the boards were somewhat of similar generation I found. I have not had success with Windows 2000, are their any hints you could give me. I have found the machines to not boot ! I am using Ghost 7.5 Enterprise. Also, and somewhat more importantly I find W2000 to be very compatible with everything but .... ITS A PIG ! I find all our W2000 installs to be quite slow, any ideas on how to speed it up. I turn off the services for Browse Master as well as the Server service, that helps alot. What else can I turn off to make these machine behalve alot faster. Also the shutdown time is ... really bad. I have been somewhat shying away from XP because as far as I know it has a poor ability to be cloned accross dissimilar hardware where NT4 seems to be so much better. Les

    NT4 on a presario 1610

You need to login as administrator. Les
  15. Yes I have seen the same problem. I think if you get the drivers from windows update, you won't have the problem. I had the same issue. Les
