i totally agree with you dapperdan & danleff rock! the system that is the biggest/most popular will more than likely be attacked im not sure how to tackle this and personally im getting tired of microsoft and their office thing thats what gets me in my tech class i was asked what i would like to learn i answered openoffice or star office, (we could choose to teach the class something about anything) and the answer i got was sorry it could only involve microsoft based software, i just looked at her and said then nothing my point is this in many tech classes all there teaching is ms office ive been taught how to use ms office from 7th to my current grade 12th and it it repeat and thats all there really teaching us microsoft has got such a hold on the system, i have no problem on teaching the stuff but there is no need to be taught the same thing repetively. it boils down to this when bought up with many new software alternatives, to say office or ie there to afraid to try it because all they know is ms products, thats why im doning my senior thesis project on linux also id have no problem in the schools if they taught ms products something rather than office like how to handle spyware, to many times have i seen someone next to me receive a fake email and open up viruses and worms and 5 minutes later there is a new virus on the system pop ups somthings got to be done is all im saying

all right this is where it gets interesting redhat has this thing about using there kernel so get the kernel from up2date or synaptic your choice i personally always run custom kernels k what your going to want to do is first hit mark all upgrades and select smart update that will update all software to the current version or i like to do that through the command line like this apt-get dist-upgrade this will upgrade everything for you it will ask you if you want to proceed and x amount of space will be taken synaptic is easily my favorite tool around you can go by sections like say applications multimedia hit enter on the package you want to install and it may come up with will install these packages as well or will have to remove the packages now at first you really dont need to worry about it the best thing about apt is resolved dependcies some applications will ask for different dependcies this handles that for you once you have all the packages you want to install hit apply it will show how many packages will install/removed/etc. and then you can expand the categories to see whats in each section just play around with synaptic and youll get the feel if you dont see the application you want you can add repositories and if you want ill explain that to you im still looking for a site that lists core 2 repositories apt-get in my opinion shows alot more power through the command line heres a link to all the commands http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man8/apt-get.8.html you can also check this out for some more help http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?p=12844&mode=threaded

if your using xp id recommend these nero deepburner roxio in order for linux k3b also dont burn any higher than 8x 4x is best and if your drive doesnt allow you to go that low then choose the lowest

all right i read this post in school when the last comment was about stealing and was going to say something not so negative was the remark i know you were not trying to get attention or anything but that is how it comes across the fat and hairy comment unsure if you were serious or joking is still uncalled for and i got somthing to say you say you got a crappy hand Quote: but so much crappy stuff has happend to me im just paying it back to society! all right i used to act like this alot then i thought about it there are kids out there who have cancer and are dying before 20 and worse, shit just live each day the fullest you can and try to keep it legal and think if you were in one of those kids Quote: Maybe if you guys would not think of it how MTV would show you all right i sorta agree here seeing as how i dress gothic and act goth, too many people view opinions based on pop culture/mainstream(not here though), but in no way have i gotten the opinion that anyone here is biased in anyway whatsoever Quote: when i think of how i wasted 120 on the radeon plus buying a laptop with radeon and it doent work i smile okay shit happens simple my computer didnt work with linux i waited 6 months and then got a dingy 650 mhz computer trying to solve the problem couldve taught you alot, i know i learned alot trying to get linux working on my newer computer Quote: my friends and tell me that it was wrong, and to take it back or something well its good that you have friends making sense thats what i was going to recommend to you but hey, infact still in effect when you do scrounge up the cash anonymously leave it at the store.

im going to agree with Dapper Dan at first i was all over the place many of the people here know that i asked alot of questions its good to explore and ger good ideas of different things but choose one and run with it youll learn twice as much like Dapper Dan this isnt cryticism what i would recommend is when sarge comes stable maybe give that a shot because you learn apt-get through ubuntu and stuff but any how my recommandations are pick up on synaptic, and apt-get and when you feel up to it compile a kernel

im doing my senior thesis on linux in the corporate enviroment anyhow one of the resorces i need is a survey any help is appreciated the questions will be mostly yes or no and maybe a few opinions but i would appreciate it if some more detail was provided again any help is appreciated and thanks for the help 1: Could software patents jeopordize the future of linux? 2: Does the fact that linux is free, weigh in on corporate decision for choosing software? 3: could linux make a viable desktop/end user substitue? 4: is linux as stated in the get facts(microsoft ads) more expensive and less productive 5: could a killer app (ie game, office suite, etc.) push linux even further into the light 6: Do you beleive that sco has any right to sue against linux 7: is any version of windows suited more so for corporate enviroments, than *nix os or mac 8:if you work at a it company that sets up computers could you please put a rough price one figure of the cost to set up A: a nix network B: a windows network thats all i have for now i will be posting some more questions later thanks again

honestly what got me hooked was FREE and open source im a cheapscate teen who doesnt have the money to dish out for software so i pirated it but i stopped after finding linux, i learned later of more perks mostly speed and customizability i dislike windows because of how it is focused on for so many attacks, at school im constantly asked if i could help people fix their cd and like the last post cds with giant scratches yeah dont forget speed my piii 650 mhz is running same speed as my xp gaming box wich runs at 2.06 ghz i really beleive in the whole opensource movement in fact about everything i use on computers is open source

uname -r 2.6.8-1-686 yeah i used synaptic i went for the nvidia driver and later i learned it selected all kernels and its holding me up and while im at it someone know where i could get a link to list all the apt-get commands and last not but least the official debian unstable and testing repositories i tried all those commands and that didnt help
-
it is about freedom i agree on core 2 i ran a tweaked kernel and decreased my load time by 10 seconds thats why i love it so much i wanted to try unstable but my computer is unstable as it is so i thought i would try testing egorgry could you possibly explain how to make the kernel bootable ie where i should put it and how i should change the bootloader i wanted to compile one myself but couldnt get it to work my boot loader is lilo also somethingotherthenwindows i would recommend trying not something different then suse but get a feel for different window managers as well and heck compiling a kernel could make your system faster and met to your specifics and theres plenty of help here i beleive ximian is a gnome clone or enhaced gnome http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/features.html http://www.novell.com/products/desktop/sysreqs.html check here dont know if your using suse 9.1 or 9.0 but ill point some more binaries this way also im using a 3d desktop enviroment something microsoft is giving in their next version that is the freedom egorgry is talking about

im just going to chime in on distro switching stick with one when you begin i made the mistake of trying around 30 different ones all non commercial anyhow as stated system specs should help
