sorry i didnt word it correctly i was in the middle of computer class anyhow writing seemed to work fine depends on what kernel i found overall that it was good example one time i copied a file that was misplaced by the linux install and moved it back over because windows didnt boot and it worked fine it seemed to work better in the 2.6 kernel than 2.4 overall i would use a fat 32 volume but honestly the only time i got any corrupted files was when i installed core 2 on my hp i moved a 7.2 media folder from my linux partition to ntfs and fat32 without problem more often than not it worked out just fine for me i guess it just depends

thanks for the responses danleff there really is no issue right now i just havent had much success reconfiguring either grub or lilo despite reading manuals i looked around some more and i got some more isos i think im going to set core as the main and the others as ones to learn with since im still a basic user/noob i do not know how to reconfigure the boot loader. when i used mepis rc2004 i was impressed as well mepis is excellent however kde isnt my top window manager but its not really about issues what else i should try, the only issue i can think of is my dvd drive wont properly read linux discs at times. thanks for the replies

nope mel not at linux super geek my hp just kept getting rid of linux so i bought a old 650 mhz box for linux painting it then im starting again, i got a 160 GB hard drive and just got it today and am going to rebuild but other than that no real tinkering with linux its been awhile since i seen you around these parts and with the doctors i know bout that, thats what most of my summer was visiting doctors but welcome back and good to see you and good luck

ne quick thing though before you start make a backup a few becuase there have been known to been complications or conflictions between xp and core 2 dual boot while core 2 is great there might be a bit of work to get it to work with xp anything else you need just ask around
-
i had the same issue when i first started think it might be the same mobo thing is fedora is kernel 2.4.x and the nforce nic isnt supported reguarly until kernel 2.6 so your options are upgrade to fedora core 2 just download and install install the nforce driveres (note i had issues so im sure someone else could help more so with the installation) this is a link should be the right one http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0283.html last but not least upgrade kernel my recommonadtion try doing the driver give you some idea of how to install stuff or just upgrade to core 2 but that means more discs to burn and more download time hope that helps and core is a great choice

i was just curious to other users response to mandrake 10 ce i really enjoy it but there are some odd things -low stability constantly freezes on me -can only get sound in gnome -slow internet in gnome -can only get updates in kde -openoffice freezes in gnome -icewm windowmaker and the other desktops are more instable than windows (yes one time it just quit on me and the pc locked and was inable to shut down) -cd player wont read sound at all these are the negatives now for positives -fast boot time -vast range of apllications -good help -easy to use -ease of learning -clean neat desktop -low background apps -great security ?how many of you have had trouble installing? this is more to get others opinion on mandrake 10 ce like a list that i gave not a full fledged review thanks for the responses

i agree with dapper dan linux isnt for everyone i like it for office structure, and other base applications for windows i admit they own a big market share, they make a good system but not the most stable my issue is being a newbie i dont have full experience with linux but first and foremost what do you get when you install windows xp home(just base narrowing as i see it i know theres more) driver support for a multitude of thing internet explorer win kernel ability to play games worpad notepad disk defrag disk cleaner few games and good easy management tools windows media player etc. now fedora core 2 openoffice 1.x few other office programs good driver support a adjustable experience cd ripper server ability multitude of games programming tools multiple window manager to choose from etc. for You get what you pay for free you get a damn lot of programs suire for newbies its hard to install and their are a multitude of programs ranging various distros but youll find one based on the engine to run on your distro on stability it is stable and its meant of more than an office enviroment not gaming maybe media but give it a chance its worth it

I recently switched my audigy to another pci slot because windows stopped reading in its old slot, the audigy is a gateway oem audigy (btw what does oem stand for), anyway i went to boot up it freezes on the firewire port on the card, tried failsafe, and all other methods, same problem. So um i thought id try reinstall it the version is mandrake 10 official edition, it freezes on install oddly enough at that firewire port, okay tried redhat same problem, ark same problem, fedora, knoppix, morphix, system rescue cd, suse, beernix, devian, gnoppix, all with the reoccuring problem, now being a big audio person i like to have a good card for playing games with in xp, and worked before in linux, do i need a new audigy or what some sidenotes when switched stopped reading flashdrives firewire port came up in my computer never seen before more memory used in windows sys specs amd atholon cp 2600+ 512 pc2700 184 pin ddr ram 120 gb dma hard drive cd rw dvd nvidia 5200 plus audigy so i was wondering is there anyway to fix this audigy issue or do i need to get a new one. last note it freezes on oh1394 which i traced back under windows to the audigy firewire port thanks in advance

i repaired windows and formated the rest of the free space this morning did some checks etc. Now what i need to do is reinstall linux my issue is in the command no the direct boot it can boot fine i just need to configure things and the firewire/audigy issues are fixed so i just need to get into the command line im going currently with lilo from slackware 10 as the boot loader

thanks for the advice danleff its not really in the closet per se but it was on a disk has been used like once a month luckily though i got my cursed machine to run without the firewire but now i need to figure out where my linux discs went im thinking ill try command line with the older one and on the one i have now an gui thanks for the help
-
let me put it this way i tried booting up slackware no go fedora 2 no go mandrake 10 oe no go gentoo no go okay ill let i think 2 days nothing except a new hole in the desk anyway i dont think you know of my systems rare and odd disability with linux im lucky to keep a distro for a month at a time, sometimes id just boot up and it would say no operating system found so i had to resetup xp so many times ive worn out the activation code 2 actually and the system wont except linux so i tried my laptop there are no perhipheals that work on it, so i asked my dad if he had any spare pcs low and behold im going to get a old 133mhz penitum one 128 mb ram 4mb video computer for liux although im reading about linux+ certification im going to need to find a distro i told my dad linux aint goingon there itll just be xp and on this relic ill have to use linux the bios are like tight i can barelyt alter anything ill doublecheck though but ill think ill stick with the relix and ill squezze as much out of it as i can
-
all right i finally got a chance to take out the audigy low and behold that isnt the problem it isnt that at all but themobo im going to try to boot fedora 2 soon see what i get
-
i agree with you although i never tried any older mandrakes but i have gone through so many dics persoanally my experience is always with instilation then stability although im not currently using linux because of hardware issues i had a bad experience with mandrake 10 it threw me for a loop i switched to slackware and fedora on my older laptop when i hadthe chance my friend hated xp and i mentioned linux and told him it was free he was sitting going through my computer mags and found out about mandrake i let him rummage through my discs and he got a copy i told to go him ahead but itwasnt my favorite anyway whe dropped out of the linux thing in two days i went over took a look somehow it ate his hard drive literally killed it and he said linux sucks and never wants to see it again but mandrake although said as a starting point it isnt that great
