What are your opinions on FreeBSD? Is it good? Does it run fast on low end hardware? Ive heard that its good as a workstation. I have a copy of it on CD(FreeBSD 5.2.1 mini-install) but it's the Mini-install version which means it uses the internet to download some apps. I was wondering whether I am able to do a minimal install of FreeBSD on a computer without using an internet connection?

Any suggestions?

I recently installed (on mandrake 9.1) a window manager named xfce (4). It installed fine, but i need add an option to login into this window manager on the main menu which is shown at startup. I can open the windowmanager up by switching to run level 2 and then going to the installation directory and typing startsfce4, but this is a bit of a hassle. I followed the instructions on another website and added an entry to /etc/X11/wmsession.d I added 19Xfce4(with the appropriate date in the file), but this doesnt seem to work. What should I do? Hi, I have been able to connect to other SSH servers(easily) from my Linux machine (Mandrake 9.1), but dont know how to set up my machine to be a SSH server. I dont want to compromise any security. I will only be logging onto the machine from my local network. Thanks

Hi, I have been trying to set up an FTP server on Mandrake 9.1 using proftpd. I have installed it properly from the installation CD. But when I type in (in shell): >service proftpd start this error message appears: "Unable to determine IP address for this machine" Why does this happen? My IP address is set fine, I checked using: >ifconfig What do I have to do to make proftpd work? Thanks

Okay, thanks for your input. I think that I will stay with Mandrake for the moment. At the moment, i can not really do much in shell. I can basically only list files and search for files. One thing though, in Mandrake 9.1, how do you make it so that my ethernat card has a static IP address? Because currently, it dynamically assigns itself one, but it takes a VERY long time!! How do i assign a static IP?

Hi, Ive currently got Mandrake installed on my computer, but I also have a copy of Fedora. The reason I didnt install Fedora is because the installation process failed when it tries to start X windows(why does this happen?). So i would have had to install it in text mode. And as I am a newbie to Linux, i was not very confident about doing so. So I installed Mandrake 9.1 instead. I was just wondering, because Fedora is newer than Mandrake 9.1, should i spend the time to install Fedora where currently Mandrake is? Actually, I'm quite happy with Mandrake as it is, i probably wont install Fedora...But whats the difference between them anyway? Thanks

YAY!! I finally got the internet wotking on Mandrake!! This is my first time posting from Linux! :-) Im very happy about this. It ended up that what i had to do was install KPPP from the Mandrake CD by using the Mandrake software installation program. I previously installed that driver i talked about: ltmodem-kv_2.4.21_0.13mdk-8.26a9-1.i586.rpm Im not sure if instally that rpm was required...but i all worked fine after I installed KPPP from CD and wrote in KPPP [Enter] in console (as a normal user). Then i just had to setup the number dial etc. :-) One other thing, is there an MSN messenger alternative in Linux?

I think i may be using it as a firewall (when i learn how to do that) But at the moment, i just was to play around with Linux on a machine that isnt very important to me.

another question: Is it common problem to have the mouse not moving as smoothly as it would in Windows? When i move my mouse really slowly in Mandrake, the mouse doesnt move at all on screen... Also, in the above post i mean: It is a LT Lucent Winmodem Mars 3

Whats the best Linux distro for a pentium 100 with 1gig hard drive whitch uses X windows? Doesnt have to be that pretty or anything. Just has to fit on a 1gig drive and run reasonable.

Yes i do have the 2.4.21-0.13.mdk kernel. It is unchanged. I got this by using the modem info program found on the net somewhere: Manufacturer ID: 11c1 Device ID: 452 It is a LT Lucent Winmodem Mar3 With support for DSP What do you reckon? I downloaded. This: ltmodem-kv_2.4.21_0.13mdk-8.26a9-1.i586.rpm from http://www.heby.de/ltmodem and ran it, but it doesnt seem to do anything?? I cannot see the modem in the Mandrake Control Center >> Hardware section.

OK. But I really need to find out whether my modem is supported in Mandrake or not... :-) It worked in Lycoris LX, so I'm supprised Mandrake did not pick it up.

Hi, I have installed Mandrake 9.1 onto my computer! I really like it! But there are a few problems I cant seem to fix... Tux Racing or any other games that require a graphics card runs really slow. I think i need to update my graphics card drivers? I have a NVIDIA Geforce 2 Ti. I downloaded this from the NVIDIA website recently: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.mun When i try to run this from my home directory as normal user, it says i need to log in as root to do this operation. But when i log in as root and try to run it from the normal user's home directory, it says file not found???? whats going on????? Also, more importantly, how do i get my internet working in Mandrake 9.1? It (the installation) said my modem was not supported (i have a Lucent Winmodem) and referred me to www.linmodems.org. Any idea what i should be looking for or wether i will be able to get my modem working? Im not sure if i installed KPPP or not. I dont see anything like "connect to ISP" or anything on Mandrake though. I really need internet on my machine, and without it I cannot make Linux my default operating system. Please help BTW, i now have my dual boot operating perfectly, i used Mandrake CD to chop my C: drive into to and installed Linux on the second part. The first partition was preserved!! I was sooo happy!! :-) Now i have: C: Windows XP Linux D: Windows XP (again) Thanks a lot! :-)

yeah I think i was using Lilo last time, im not really sure? why does the /boot partition have to be after the winxp partition? I was actually planning on having just 3 partitions: 1: Linux 2: Linux Swap (do i need this? I have 256 physical ram) 3: WinXP In that order. If i have to place /boot partition after the WinXP partition then how large does the partition have to be? One other thing, how come the Linux formatter is sooo much faster than Windows formatter and Fdisk?? I should use EXT3 for my linux partitions right?
