How to format windows xp and install win98
peterh replied to Tom Champagne's topic in Everything New Technology
Boot off a Win 98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com), run FDISK and delete all the partitions (non-dos). Create a new Primary DOS Partition and format it. Then run setup from Win98 CD and install Windows 98. -
Are they built in USB ports? Are they USB 1.1 or 2.0 type ports? Which OS are you using? What are you plugging into the USB Ports?
-
When restoring the image, in the options, tell Ghost to use the same size partition as the one in the image and NOT expand it to fill the disk. NT boot partitions should not exceed 7GB!
-
No, you need VirusScan Enterprise v8.0i to install on servers: http://www.mcafee.com/uk/audience/enterp...n&cid=10578

If its under warrenty then you can get it replaced but otherwise a new laptop would probably work out cheaper... Otherwise see: http://www.screentekinc.com/ http://www.portables.co.uk/acatalog/Laptop_notebook_repair.html http://www.analogic.co.uk/

First turn off any Power Saving Options in the BIOS and in the Power Options control panel and the screen saver tab in the Display control panel. Also make sure display drivers are upto date and that your graphics card has enough power to work correctly otherwise you may get unexpected power problems.
-
Did you backup your profile (C:\Documents or settings) or the Personal Certificate before formatting? Without the certificate privatkeys its impossible to read the files again... See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;223316 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308993 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;887414 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241201

Is it a PCI Express card or an AGP card? Does it need an extra power lead connecting? Some powerful cards need extra power for it to work correctly. Make sure the correct slot is selected for graphics is enabled in BIOS setup eg PCI, AGP or PCI-Express.

You cannot uninstall DirectX, not without having to reinstall Windows again afterwards. Windows 2000 comes with DirectX 7. Windows XP comes with DirectX 8.1 Windows 98 comes with DirectX 5 (6 for 98SE) Windows Me comes with DirectX 6 You can install DirectX 9 and still have backward compatibility with older versions of DX 5 to 8. I suggest reinstalling Windows again, then install DirectX 9.0c. For DOS games, DX is irrelevant as DX only affects windows games. http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/95 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/

Did you backup your profile in c:\documents and settings? did you export your certificate key to disc first? Without the cert key, its impossible to decrypt the data unless you have a REcovery Agent somewhere.
-
I just installed F.E.A.R. and that also asks to install DX 9.0c (I already have it installed), so I said yes and it installed the game and it DID NOT reinstall DX. So I suggest you run setup again and select yes to install DX9 and it should skip it if its installed already.

FF 7 only requires 2MB of Video RAM so your card should be fine. Maybe you need to update drivers or use the compatibility mode to get it to work with XP.

NT4.0 compatibility with Nikon Coolpix 2200 camera?
peterh replied to HarryA's topic in Everything New Technology
Scrap NT and install Windows 2000 or XP to use your camera. NT does not support USB, you could try a USB to serial converter cable and connect camera to PC's serial port instead. -
2000Pro / 2000Server dualprocessor seem screw up winmodems
peterh replied to bwana's topic in Everything New Technology
Use an external modem rather than winmodems. -
can I install a second version ?
peterh replied to HarryMangurian's topic in Everything New Technology
No, it will not work, you will need a retail version of XP to install XP on a different partition. A restore disk will just delete the existing installation and install XP again. -
Help 1 of 3 User Accounts have 'lost' files
peterh replied to eap's topic in Everything New Technology
Look in C:\Documents and Settings and see if a new profile directory has been set up. Maybe her existing ac got corrupted and when she logged in she got a new profile?! See this article on getting files back: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326688 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/ -
Did you uninstall the old drivers before installing the new card? If not uninstall all drivers and it should revert to standard SVGA graphics, then install the new drivers.
-
What should have happened is that XP would have reverted to the standard SVGA driver. In the BIOS make sure that AGP is selected as the preferred or first graphics card so it will always use that. Any onboard gfx should be disabled (it is not necessary to have onboard gfx when uninstalling drivers).

You are given a choice of where to install Vista. Ideally you need so unused disk space to install Vista onto (4GB or more) or onto a spare hard disk.
-
Make sure File and Printing Sharing is enabled on your machine and that the Workgroup name (or domain name) matches the same name as the other PCs.
-
Add the Win 2000 domain account into the Administrators or Account Opertors group on the NT4 Domain and add the NT4 account to the same groups on the Win 2000 domain!

Try out this http://www.aol.co.uk/help/members/broadband/broadband_checkup.html and this: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/2906

Try DVD Burner from http://dvdburner.tradetouch.com/ I would upgrade to Windows XP as soon as possible!

I have a problem with windows server 2003????
peterh replied to mOrrI's topic in Everything New Technology
Is the server in a domain? If so you can over ride the local policies with a Group Policy and set Logon Local User Rights for the users you wish to login with. You need to set it in a OU where the server is (not the Computers container).
