Notebook graphics are not designed for playing games and are too slow or do not support all the features for DirectX 9 games. Sims 2 will detect this a refuse to run. There is a workaround, by playing Sims not at full screen but in a window: Check out http://eagames.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/eaga...amp;p_topview=1

ActiveX controls are pretty safe as long as you don't download them constantly. Windows XP SP2 has a good 'Manage Add ons' facility on the tools menu to keep track of them. Ideally, you should configure security on IE Internet Options to block unsafe or unsigned ActiveX controls on Internet zone. Java is regularly updated so keep it upto date is important to fix any security holes. Current is Java 1.5 from Sun's website (remember to uninstall previous versions).

>1. After installing AD on a machine and pointing to itself for DNS, then creating another DC on same domain and site for replication/redundancy, should each machine point to itself for DNS and the other for secondary? Preferably, yes. I also make DNS Active Directory integrated as well so it get replicated automatically. >2. Once first site is up and running I decide to make a child domain on remote subnet. Do I install DNS first or after promotion? After installation, if I want the remote site to go through first site to internet, do I have to configure DNS forwarding and put in those DC's as forwarders? If so, should I use recursion or no? Then do the DC's on the first site forward DNS requests with recursion to ISP DNS servers? Yes, always install DNS first before DCPromo'ing. Remember to configure DNS name in System control panel, computer name first so DNS ensures the server is part of that domain. Configure forwards on child domains to point to parent domain, then point the parent domain forwards to the internet (ISP DNS). Think of DNS like a tree with branches further down and thats how it should work.

restarted comp, all files on my usb flash lost!!! need help pls!!
peterh replied to icyrick's topic in Software
Your files are still there but it'll take weeks to discover which bits of files belong to which. It seems the FAT filesystem on USB was corrupted and lost the file index, hence the load of found.xxx files which contains pieces of the files. If the files were that important you would have a backup of them? You DO do backups???? -
If you mean Domain users then use the ADMT tool: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/tools/admt/default.asp You can also use the CSVDE/LDIFDE tools as well to export/import users. Also

Drives only recognize contents at startup

Is plug and play enabled in the BIOS? Is plug and play service or Shell Hardware Detection service enabled (see services.msc)? Is autoplay enabled for Removable drives? See XP fixes here: http://www.dougknox.com/ -
Its a driver problem this. All I can suggest is to remove all un necessary peripherals and PCI cards (except graphics card) and then try rebooting. Then add them one by one reboot and see which one is causing the problem. More info on STOP messages here: http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

It means that your graphics card is too old or too slow for DirectX 9 type feature. Typical cards are SIS, S3 and Intel Extreme Graphics. You will have to play Sims in Window rather than Full Screen mode or replace card with an faster AGP Graphics Card. Is your graphics card (See dxdiag.exe to see what you have) listed on the compatible card list?
-
Only it if supports PCI Express type plug in which you would see on high end Laptops (>£1000). Only a small number of new laptops have this feature. Otherwise to get a faster graphics card is to replace the laptop as the gfx chip is built into the motherboard.

I would stick with Windows XP 32 bit for time being. Windows XP 64 and Vista will NOT have all the drivers you require. You can try dual booting, so if you have some free space on your HD, you can install XP 64 on a seperate partition to try it out and if things don't work out, you can still switch back to your 32 bit Windows.

Using Windows XP Pro on a drive slide.

No, and I do not recommend doing this. XP is purchased one license per machine, a roving HD is basically breaking this license agreement. -
How to restore to an unlisted restore point
peterh replied to mochalite's topic in Customization & Tweaking
No its not possible. What backup utility did you use to create the 'backup 5/29' file? Ideally, you would copy off the data and backup files (backups should NOT be on the same disk as the data! What if the disk dies? Data and backups would be useless.) The reinstall a clean install of XP, install the backup program and restore files from backup file. -
I find it easier to configure the LAN port to a specific speed and duplex mode which is compatible with the switch/hub/router its on. For example, 100MB Full Duplex would be fine.

connecting router to dsl modem/router
peterh replied to abdofeleskimo's topic in Customization & Tweaking
I have connected an Airport Wireless to a ADSL router. All I changed was the IP address of the wireless router to be on the same subnet as the the ADSL one. For example, the ADSL router will be 10.0.0.2 and the wireless router is 10.0.0.3. The I turned off the DHCP service on the wireless router and just used the one on the ADSL router. Now all the wireless router does is 'forward' rather than 'routes' packets to the ADSL router or other devices on the LAN. Works fine. -
Yes speakers can distort the screen as the CRT uses magnetics to move the electron gun inside the monitor. So having other magnetic sources can interfere over time. Trying moving speakers further away from screen and see if it makes an improvement...

There are known issues with Samsung SD drives so I would forget using that, the Philips also may be too old. I think replacing some of the components will be required to get fully compatibility with XP.

For servers you need to setup RRAS (Remote Access Services) for this sort of thing: eg http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323415

Such thing as default mode? (Windows XP)
peterh replied to reignofdragons's topic in Everything New Technology
There are numerous features that can reset settings: - Group policy GPEDIT.MSC - Local policies - Mandatory profiles - Windows file protection Although this sould not affect data files other than default save locations. -
My be the files are on the hard disk but a different place. Use the Start, Search facility to see if they been saved elsewhere eg you logged in as a different user and files have been saved to a different location. A crash or reboot should not affect files saved to disk. A system restore is no good as that affects program files only not data files.

Anyone crashing because of printing word or PDF docs?
peterh replied to erwincole's topic in Everything New Technology
Depends on printer drivers, version of Acrobat or Word. Try Acrobat Reader 7 for starters. -

Get a windows 98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. Boot off the 98 disk, run FDISK and delete all non-DOS partitions. If you cannot use FDISK try DELPART free program instead. Then the disk will be clean ready for any OS. -
How to uninstall Norton Antivirus 2006 Beta (buggy & jams MS Office)?
peterh replied to Dave99999's topic in Security
Try this article: Error: "Norton AntiVirus 2004 installation has failed. Do you want to try to install again?" Document ID: 2003091115080306 http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav...sm=no&tpre= -
Sounds like the Autoexec.nt file is missing or was written to with a non-text editor. To fix copy the .NT files from c:\Windows\Repair to C:\Windows\System32
