When upgrading from older OS to a new one, the drivers for your hardware will also need up[censored] as new hardware is not always provided in XP. Download driver from manufacturer's web site.

To set one up on Win X: a) Start, Settings, Control Panel Network Connections c) New Connection Wizard d) Select Next on first screen e) Select 'Connect to the network at my workplace' f) If using a modem or ISDN then select 'Dial Up Connection' If using ADSL, then select 'VPN Connection' g) Follow instructions... and provide details for VPN host etc.

- what do you need in order to set up a vpn? do i have to download some software? Nope. - what do you need to do to be able to successfully connect to a vpn? TCP/IP, Dial up number or IP address or VPN server, username and password. - how are proxy servers different from vpn? Proxy servers are a buffer between the companies intranet and the internet and as well as filtering it can do caching etc. - how do i know what to use PPTP or L2TP? Ask the provider of VPN. - do i need to configure something else on my router in order to be able to connect to a vpn? No. - will i definitely be needing certificates? and how do i get one? Depends on the provider. In most cases I shouldn`t think so. - is the "go to my pc" software like a vpn? No idea.

gaming problems with Windows 2000 (Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Neverwinter
peterh replied to red-dragonX's topic in Games
The default drivers with Windows tend not to include the OpenGL part of the drivers. Also, when downloading graphics drivers, ALWAYS use the WHQL signed drivers as they are more reliable than unsigned ones. -
Try cleaning the CD, finger marks and dirt can cause alsorts of problems with CDs. BTW, I have installed and run HL on XP Home with no problems, so its not an XP problem.
-
Have you tried another PCI slot for the card? Preferably away from the graphics card which can get very hot and affect other hardware. Also, old BIOS firmware can cause it. See http://dmzweb3.europe.creative.com/SRVS/...04),Kb=Creative

installing 3rd party driver during setup with no floppy drive
peterh replied to balemon's topic in Hardware
You need to create a 'slipstream' CD with service packs and extra drivers installed so it can be all installed from one CD. See http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/ http://www.willowhayes.co.uk/windows2000/ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314479 -
I would personally side on the caution side. When using software, the EULA states its for x machines only and not to be copied elsewhere (except one backup). SO copyright applies to programs, help files, pictures, documents and icons I would personally create one's own icons with the many Icon Creation programs that are out there...

If you need to modify DOS setting, edit the Config.nt and Autoexec.nt files in C:\Windows\System32 e.g. a common edition is FILES=40 in the Config.nt to allow more files open concurrently etc.
-
Either: a) Upgrade PC to Windows XP Replace program with Win 2000 compatible version.
-
I do know that Windows NT can emulate DOS (see config.nt and autoexec.nt) with cmd.exe to some extent, and even Windows 95 using the batch files on NT CD. To emulate Win XP you need 3rd party program such as Virtual PC otherwise its not possible.

pls help me how to implement windows2000 group policy in windowsnt workstation
peterh replied to ifx's topic in Networking
You cannot use GPOs with NT4 machines. (Time to upgrade them to 2000/XP). You have to use the System Policy Editor (see NT CD) to create a Policy which can be saved as Ntconfig.pol in Sysvol directory on the DC. This will apply to ALL NT4 machines in the domain. -
See http://www.macromedia.com/support/flash/ts/documents/control_remove.htm
-
You can boot off the NT4 CD and do a repair of the system files and select yes for the corrupt file. Then when it boots up ok, reapply the NT4 service pack. Otherwise you need to get hold of ERD Commander from http://www.winternals.com/products/index.asp

pls help me how to implement windows2000 group policy in windowsnt workstation
peterh replied to ifx's topic in Everything New Technology
Group Policy does not apply to NT4 machines. You need to use the SysPol (System Policy) tool to create an ntconfig.pol file with the policies you set and save it in \\<pdc name>\sysvol. So that it will apply to ALL NT4 machine. See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;185589 for more info. -

Anyone Know where a USB mass storage driver is for Win NT?
peterh replied to Kriscoast's topic in Hardware
I have tried a few third party USB drivers for NT4 but its very hit and miss (mainly miss). What Motherboard/USB controller do you have? See these links: http://www.jungo.com/kdusb_nt.html http://www.ealaddin.com/support/hasp/vendor.asp http://www.jetway.com.tw/evisn/download/driver/index-1.htm (VIA drivers) etc -
What about IE 5.0 or 5.5 from http://debian.goldweb.com.au/microsoft/ie/5.01sp2/win9x/ http://isis2.admin.usf.edu/Downloads/downloadie55.htm

Try renaming Regedit.exe to Regedit.com and see if it loads now.

Sounds like some sort of conflict with the hardware. I use Ghost 2002 with no problems. When, restoring, just boot off the Ghost boot floppy (or CD if you elected to make your image disk bootable) and then you can restore the image on a blank hard disk. Nothing else needs installing before hand. It certainly makes reinstalling Windows quicker....

Need for Speed (I assume thats the game) requires DirectX 9 and NT4 does NOT support DirectX. Upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP to play games!
