I have a dual boot on an 8gig drive, Linux is installed onto a 857mb partition, with a 512 swap partition.(The other 6.6 gigs is used by windows, with 900mb free) Its only used for chatting, and some dos games, though I do have a geforce 3 in it, which is nice for open gl screensavers. How small of swap space can I get away with? It has 512 of physical Ram

Perhaps a corrupt iso or burning error? Have you tried redownloading the ISO and burning it at a slower speed, Ive read they like to be burned slow, say 8x-16x

Call of Duty, wiht loki installed, but it wont start
Whiskers replied to Whiskers's topic in Linux Games
Got it to work, apparently I need to have the command line version of Cedega, to use loki installers. So now the game works, but its messes up the desktop after it exits. As best as I can describe it. My monitor runs in 1280x960 (it wont do 1280x1024 for some reason) game I run in 800x600, but when it exits it still in 800x600, but you have to move your mouse around the edge of the screen to see your desktop, its like the desktop is bigger than the Monitor. I would try to run the game in 1280x960, but it doesnt support that resolution. Any ideas? -
Despite any issues with Mandrake 10, I would go with that one, as one newbie to another. I had Mandrake 9.2 but it was a bit dated, and 10 uses a new kernel and it includes built in support for nforce audio and lan (9.2 requires you to install a driver off the nvidia site). Also it it very easy to use and install additional programs, being as popular as it is, there are many installs made for it. Mandrake is an rpm based distro, you click on the rpm file, the enter the superuser password and it installs, its a lot easier than having to do make install and compile the thing (I'm pretty fuzzy on that). I havent had to compile anything yet. You can find RPM files for just about anything you could want, and for those without rpms, there is usually a shell script that you run wiht sh theprogram or ./theprogram I havent yet figured out how to tell which to use all the time, but if one doesnt work, its probably the other command.

Hey thank you everyone, it works great, I have java support now
-
ok before I do that, I use firefox for my browswer installed in /home/whiskers/firefox other than changing the directory to firefox is everything else going to be the same? best to ask now before I mess it up

I dccided to move up to Mandrake 10, (9.2) would lock up sometimes, So I have 10 now Instaleld Nvidia driver (in the text mode) Startx, "no screens found" in 9.2 , i would have to reinsall teh driver, then startx woudl work for that session and I would have to run teh X11 config tool to set resolution for monitor and card. But in 10 cant get in to do that. SO Im stuck in text mode, adn I somehow need to get into the etc/x11/ XF86 file to add the "nvidia" under driver, and somehow set the monitor resolution *in a state of panic now* ANd sometimes stuff locks up, and im like grrr i have to do cold reboot, and then itss time to reload the OS what should i be doing when stuff locks up? is there any way out?

I cant seen to find my install, would it be ok to downloaed the latest Java, and install that, even though I have an existing install? oh and Distro is Mandrake 10 Official
-
Its the java plugin, I needs a symlink, I I have java installed but i dont even remember where it is installed too. When I installed StarOffice, it intalled the Java, I just need to make it work in Firefox.
-
do i need to be in a certain folder to do that? and what does that $ mean, do i type that or does that merely mean, be in a terminal window?
-
mine matches exactly I used to have it set to 1280x1024 at 60hz , then I later set it to Plug and Play, and have the resolution at 1280x960 at 24bpp (I used to try 1280x1024, but linux would reset it to 1280x960 (guessing card didnt like that resolut at 24bit colour) It's a random thing, and I dont know what causes it, things were great till all of a sudden , the error. Fortunately its easy to reinstall the driver but dang, how to fix the "no screens found" I always play with the Xserver config and pretend to change stuff, and hit ok., then reboot
-
grr that happened to me just now again, wtf does "no screens found" really mean? and what is the what to fix that other than reinstalling the driver again?

Mandrake, Dell and the great LG CDROM fiasco !!
Whiskers replied to web mack's topic in Everything Linux
Well yes they are cheap, for a cd burner at least, cd burners have always been a luxury, and required big bucks, I remember paying $340 for my 4x burner back in the day, today they are still a luxury item, expect to pay around $100 for a good burner (I paid around $120 for my Plextor Premium), despite the market being flooded with no-name burners selling for $20-$40, LG, Lite-On, Mad Dog, etc Has LG offered any options to replace the affected models with non-affected model drives? I can just see, some newbie computer users with blank stares in their eyes firmware upgrade huh? Either way good luck to you, whatever you decide to do. -
In your bios there may also be the option to disable APIC (no clue what It does),but apperently it can cause hangups.

Along the same lines as previous post, I just searched for your burner on the net, you're giving yourself a big headache over a cheap $40 burner. -

er if it was me, I'd throw away the LG drive and get a Plextor, have you gone that route of just getting a new drive that is compatible? -
Tell linux to stop trying to automount my external drive on boot
Whiskers posted a topic in Everything Linux
I have an external usb 2.0 drive, partitioned and mounted as follows /usb1 /usb2 /usb3 are all fat 32 partitions, on boot, it trys to mount these 3 partitions and says failed , and im thinking, well duh, the driveis only for backing up data, and its not plugged in. I would like it to stop trying to mount this drive on boot, if i want to mount it I will do some manually with the mount command. Also when it gets mounted it would be nice to be able to write to it , currently I have to log into X as root, yes i know thats not a good idea, but it was the only way i could access the drive. Tried changing the drives chmod to 777 and tried changing the access under the mount properties (it shows 3 folders where it mounts the drive to /usb1 /usb2 and /usb3 Any help would be appreciated and thanks
