The only concern I have about Belkin is that APC has linux shutdown software, and Belkin doesnt have linux shutdown software. Is there some 3rd party that has created software to shut down linux when using a belkin UPS? -
What is this APIC thing that was mentioned, I didnt do a no apic this install, but, I disabled it in the bios before a previous install because I read it can cause hangs in the system. The question is that, what is APIC and what does it do?

I use an pop3 email provider which differs from my ISPs, and they (my isp) has disabled relaying, so I cant send my email through their smtp server. WHen I ran Windows I had to use a personal SMTP server. Is there a similiar thing for Linux? And how easy would it be to set it up?
-
Sure express your concerns, I'm not out to send spam, I just want to make my machine able to send email again. Right now I have QK SMTP server set up on a Windows box, and its configured to allow the lan computers to send mail through it, but I dont want to have to have 2 computers just to send email. Heres the link to my email provider, I've been using www.mail.mu or http://eng.mail.mu (if your russian isnt that great) for my email since 99. I'm a student of russian, and it was nice to have a russian email provider.

Sweet!, looks like I will be going with APC, as for filesystem how do I check which one I'm using? And I still dont know how many VA I need. -
Yes, your name describes you well, and Linux isnt for everyone, the same can be say for Macs, they arent for everyone either. You dont like Linux, boo hoo, thats your business, but you really dont need to be whining about it here. After switching my gaming box completely over to linux I have found some games dont work yet, but with so many people also using it theres bound to be the fix shortly. As for Antivirus and Spyware protection, dont need any, they scipt kiddies are too busy making new viruses for Windows, and with the security built into linux, spyware cant install itself. As for what you get, Windows gives you media player, email client, web browser, and thats about it. Linux gave me, Media player which supports DVDS natively, and built in Divx support, cd burning, email client, web browser, graphics software Mostly though, I like that when a game freezes up, the system isnt locked up as well, ctrl-alt f1, or something like that, opens up a new terminal session, and I could probably kill the xsession, but i just reboot to kill it, and thats a safe reboot instead of the cold reset button.

I think you are missing the point, its a FREE ESP, which I have been using for years, its indendent of my isp so i can change isp at a whim, and people will still be able to get a hold of me. I dont think it was installed by default, I didnt install any of the server options, but im sure it'll prompt me to install it if i try to run it. I just need to set up a personal smpt server for my own use. my ESP doesnt have a smtp server, you have to either use your ISP's smtp server or run your own. and since I cant use my ISP's smtp server....I'm back to running my own, but i dont know how to set one up in linux.
-
I already have an email address which I have had for years, and I'm not going to stop using it cause my isp says, sorry, you cant use our smtp server to send your mail. So I need to set up my own smtp server. (which I had when I ran Windows.)

All right I'll have to suffer dealign with teh evil OS just for stabily testing Can you shed any light on the APIC thing? what is it? or what does it do?
-
You may want to run down to your local computer shop and pick up another usb->ps2 adapter, they're like $5 here. Then if you still have problems with no mousie try reburning the cds. I was reading in one of hte posts that iso's like to burn slow. I burned my 4 disk set at 16x and it seems to be fine

I called up kingston back up, seems only their value line has issues, so I caled up the retailed and am getting an rama for refund and I will be purchaseing some coorsair TWINXL 1024-3200 C2 ram
-
I took it to the shop to test the hardwware all of which they said tested good. But i got the ram switched out, Kingston Value Ram (thinking I should have sprung for Corsair, even though didnt have the extra money for that brand) 1 gig (512 matched retail pair Kinston ValueRam) XP 3200 w/400 fsb Asus A7NX-E DELUXE (late4st bios) Asus geforceFX 5700 w/256mb Creative AudigyGamer (first generation) Plextor Premium CDRW Pioneer Slotload DVD (2) Lian Li Mobile racks 60 GB Western Digital 7200 rpm 120 GB Western Digital 7200 rpm Enermax noisetaker 600 watt PS Thermaltake Volcano 12 Extreme running at 5800 rpm Video & Suond card, Hard Drives, Cdrom drives were uses in previous system without any problmems. MOBO, RAM, Processer, PS all new I was reading that APIC can cause hangs so I checked the Force NO APIC optin during install and I disabled APIC in bios thoguht im not really sure that APIC is or what it does. And i changed in teh bios ICQ to manual, to let Linux assign them instead of the bios.
-
Nope never messed with that. Im haveing way to many problems with this computer. in Winzdoeze it woudl reboot at random, with Linux it locks up sometimes. Not sure what could be causing it. Any ideas? Someone suggested IRQ problmes? Have changed the bios to manual irq, so it will let Linux set them up right? instead of the bios. Have got to say though, I much prefer the flexibily and stability linux has over winoze.

I used a usb drive ONCE, and now every time i reboot, theres the icon for the drive on my desktop, reguardless if the devices is plugged in and turned on. How can I get rid of this?
-
Nope nope its not found there, just looked, and cant delete the icon, My guess is that its like supermount, where the icon is always there. So mebbe I can turn supermount off for those type of drives?

Ok here is what is confusing me, I ran the loki installer and it installs the game here /usr/local/games/cod which is similiar to where it installed Castle Wolfenstein, however that game didtn require Cedega to run, and this one does. -

Actually I dont know, the loki installer installs a shortcut to the Kde menu which just links to the codsp file to start the game, but it wont start. I paied my subscriptoin fee and I have Cediga installed and I use point to play to do games but this one was different it uses loki AND Cediga
