different connections have different ratios. I have a 576kps connection, and d/l and upload at 288kps. File trasnfers usually start of really high, but level out at around 58kps.

I think we all know about it, and a lot of us feel powerless to help as it is such a gigantic tragedy. With the deaths now over 123,000 and in 11 different countries, ANY help you can give is appreciated by all. I myself have been lucky enough to have been unaffected as far as deaths of people I know are concerned, however my heart goes out to all who have been affected, and I feel for your loss at this global tragedy. Hopefully, in time, there will be some kind of tribute set-up, listing those lost in this time of strife, and commemorating all who helped rebuild these countries affected. And 'rebuild' really is a key word. It's not only death, it's food and water supplies, shelter,sanitation, even industry. The economy of all the affected countries will be shattered, industires will come to a stand still,refugees numbers will soar, and in 10 years time, this will still be affecting everyday life. I know this is perhaps an advertisement post, but I think it should be allowed due to recent events. Please give anything you can afford to help rebuild the lives of millions of people It doesn't matter whether it's 00.50 or 5million, it really WILL help, as it all amasses. have you set-up an Autoexec file in the following folder? C:\Program Files\Valve\SteamApps<username>\Half Life 2\hl2\cfg if so, check to see if there is a command in it called "ai_disable" if there is, then delete it (the line not the document) if not, then during gameplay next time it happens, open the developers consoel and type "ai_enable" without quotation marks. If this solves the problem, then create an autoexec.txt file in the above mentioned folder and type "ai_enable" into it. If the "ai_enable" command doesn't work, please post here again

I'm not sure with Silent Hill 4, but I have played others in the series, and the 'save points' (notepads/journals etc.) are usually placed in specific and strategic points, but can be used infinitely. System might have changed in the latest edition, so I can't be sure though x)

Indeed, avatars would be a very good feature. I can't help thinking it would be abused though, so maybe they have to be authorixed by a mod before they can be used.

GeCube Radeon 9800 Extreme 256mb runs HL2 like a dream, you should be able to run it up to 1280x960 resolution, and seeing as your GPU RAM is 256mb rather than the 'standard' 128mb, it will be able to handle the high texture count/detail okay. Don't know much about the ATI 9800 pro, but I'm sure the other guys around here do.

what happens when you try to open the dvd from my computer to see what files are on it?

I'm sure I read a thread like this before, but I couldn't find it , sorry guys! Anyway here goes; My wall jack has a microfilter in. This microfilter connect to my modem via an RJ45 ethernet cable. This modem connects to my PC via a USB cable. There are no other ports on my DSL modem. Microsoft suggest I keep this connection, and as I have a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC (which allows 10 Mbps), I should use this to connect to my xbox's ethernet port. So basically: microfilter--->Modem--->PC--->PCI NIC--->Xbox. I realise I will have to have my PC running to utilise Xbox live, but does this sound correct? It does to me but my luck over the entire last year with my PC has been nothing short of abysmal, and about 50% of my reasoning to get an Xbox is to use XboxLive.

Okay I won't harp on about steam but just one point. All I had to do to play Half Life Offline was to select the offline mode. What hoops/authorization issues did you mean?

Yeh mine took about the saem amount of time jmmijo just some brief points about steam 1. Half Life 2 can be played with steam in Offline mode 2. You can turn some updates off (EG the latest one for CSS) 3. The memory that steam uses up IS included in the requierments for running HL2 4. Steam gives you latest gaming news/updates available, lets you download HL2 deathmatch and Codename Gordon.(extra games you don't have to pay for) 5. Steam servers are ultra fast!! 8) 6. It has good protection against piracy. As you can probably tell, I think steam is a good idea, and personally I think this is the way forward for many games to have not the entire playable game on a CD, as this will also cut down on piracy. I realise people seem to be having lots of problems with steam, but it has been working fine for me from day 1

You ARE missing out on having a console, as in general the games for them are much more 'pick up and play' but they also have hardcore games for proeper 'gamers' and basically anything in between aswell. Fable? Great game, not played it myself but heard about it from friends who I tend to agree with in gaming opinions, looks pretty sweet aswell. Anyway, as long as you're enjoying gaming, its all good! ps. played counter strike source yet?

Have you put the CD into the drive as soon as your PC is turned on?

Don't know if there is a fix for it, I had it before and I just reinstalled windows from the CD. Sorry that this doesn't really help, but at least you know there is a 'contigency plan'.

CS:S is an online multiplayer First Person Shooter. My internet connection is 576kps. When playing CSS, my ping/latency(the time, in milliseconds, it takes for information to be sent from my PC to the host server, and back to my PC again) is generally 40-70, and I find anything below 100 is acceptable. When on a call in skype my ping rises (roughly) to about 40-90, so it doesn't seem to be my bandwidth being clogged up by a large data flow. Only othe thing I can think of is RAM. I have done multple tweaking aswell, but these seem to have little effect, but even then only when I am not in a call on skype. btw, sound from hl2.exe and skype.exe come through the SAME pair of speakers. Whilst it isn't necessary for me to be in a call while playing CSS, it does help a lot as communicating with my clan members is key. Really at an end here about what to do, it might be something simple that I am overlooking such as using the changing I/O devices used for sound, or there might not even be a 'fix', but my clan members run skype and CSS at the same time with little or no effects on gameplay.
