    C&C 1 installing under windows 2000

I would imagine that you need to get your hands on something like Partition Magic. You can spilt your hard disk into two (or 3, 4, 5....) and with the new partition put 98 on. Of course this can go very very wrong! Lots of articles on the net about dual booting. Heres one of the better ones: http://www.webtechgeek.com/center-Frame-win-SuperTechGeek-Dual-Boot.htm as that article says, research is the key. If I remember right, isnt C&C DOS based?? I seem to remember something about Red Alert opening in a DOS box even when you ran it in Win95...... Maybe there is something (free) out there that can help you out with DOS emulation. I gtg right now but if nothings happens in the meantime I'll post back tommorrow

    Cool Task Switcher

Slow alec? Never! It took me a good 20mins to find that app! We all have friend brains every so often I reckon u r right and we should post good apps/tweaks etc etc to customise the functionailty of the shell. Theres lots on the 'net about appearance (Stardock stuff, wallpapers, replacement shells etc.) however we should go for functionailty of the existing shell. On your marks.... get set........

    Win2000 Pop-Up Descriptions

hey hey look what I found! InfoTip Extension Version 2.0.4.106 http://www.na.rim.or.jp/~norio/index-e.shtml This little baby works a treat. After I installed it, I simply right clicked a file, configured this app on its own "Info tip extension" tab and bob's your aunty all sorted. Best bit is that it says stuff like "Size 4.30MB (4505865 bytes)" I think you have to configure the customisations for every filetype. I guess thats even better! ---- Scin

    C&C 1 installing under windows 2000

Did you get a message saying that it was registered successfully? Also this only works for Windows 2000 SP2 and above. If the above are true, then you have to go into the Properties of the shortcut, not of the exe itself. So, create a shortcut to the setup/install/game exe and then do properties on that and it should be there (i hope!) Set whatever compatability layer you wish and click OK. Then execute your shortcut. ---- Scin
  8. i wonder out of that figure, how many problems were actually down to SP2 and not other factors e.g. spyware, software and ummm user ability (hmmm!)?? That figure could be even smaller. I might try SP2 again- and actually make the effort to get it to work (and prepare properly). I might change that figure to 0.50000000001%
  9. a rewrite? ooo baby thats kinda scary and exciting all at the same time! Which bit and why? Can't say my overclock disappeared when I briefly tried SP2... but then again I didnt explicitly take note..... However I cannot feasibly see a way that some MS code can possibly screw with everybody's BIOS chips since there are so many. And doesn't Intel own this microcode issue anyway?? BTW it should be documented since I believe that was one of the big deals re: XP. Here are some handy links for a BIOS issue, which may have got misheard- a-la-chinese-whispers! http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm and loosely: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=842465 If SP2 does some how wipe out my BIOS I will be p1ssed! You know how long it took me to delicatly overclock it and set up my SATA RAID?!!!!!! hehe looking forward to this one
  10. I cant wait when the cash machines talk to me!!!! What a great idea LOL "heres your cash u rich b*****d"! Seriously though lots of bizarre things could start talking. ATMs Security systems with the added megaphone things Train timetable screens ...the voices in my head 8)
  11. Very true- and I am sure there is an explanation for it somewhere. I've just spent a whole day getting a MS Access database to work properly (its an awful thing to 'develop' in) and rest assured things just break for no apparent reason all of the time! Lets face it- it could be so much worse judging by the other SP2 posts that have reared thier ugly heads. If i get some free time soon I'll have a further dig around and see if we can formulate a solution. Even if you solve your problem in the meantime I am sure we will all end up just that little bit cleverer by the end of it!

    Overclocking problem

You know one day it will be the 50Hz of the electricity that will be the bottleneck Seriously though, my interest was curiosity too and in the end I came up the worst problem....the hardware was the bottlenck. My old (note that I say old ;( ) CPU was screaming away whilst my (good at the time) 20Gb WD drive chugged along! As for my rig now, well that just got stoooopid since now it sounds like a fighter plane ready for take off. Yes it goes fast and yes i love it but the whooshing sound does my head in. Anyhow post back when you need to know if UV liquid is worth it in your new cooler
  14. Ive only seen this error when disks die! Not normally 'death by SP2' mind I guess there are two easy options: 1- stay on SP1 2- rollback to SP1, move the data to the working disk, change back to a basic disk then load the data back on. Go back to SP2 and prey it works! I am assuming that this disk is a simple volume? If so I suppose you may as well just have it as a basic disk. Of course if it is mirrored, striped etc then thats a whole different story!

    XP SP2 'tip'

I know what you are thinking.... yes another SP2 thread (just what we need!!). However this tickled me slightly and thought it may prove useful to someone. I like to have Automatic Updates on, however it keeps bugging me about SP2. Here's a little release from MS to stop that nagging: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en Interesting to note that "the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP SP2 will be available for a period of 120 days (4 months) from August 16" Merry Christmas :x
  16. Hi Sister! & welcome Looks like you have a lot of nasty stuff there. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad/Wordpad/Word. You shouldnt have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below since this will cause problems and may well stop half of the nasty stuff from being removed! Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. I'm sorry if these points are not exact since i have never used Windows ME. Make sure your Ad-aware, Spybot etc. is the newest version and check for any updates before running them. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to customise the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds. Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or install a free AV if your NAV has expired at Avast.com. Select the Autoclean option if you use TrendMicro. There are lots of free and good antivirus apps out there, however Avast has worked for me in the past. Hopefully once your tools and Norton are up to date you should be ok. This really does look like your antivirus is way out of date since C:\WINDOWS\INETG\SERVICES.EXE is a trojan (TROJ_SMALL.BI at Trend Micro) and was detectable as of 25th July, 2004. However to be on the safe side, once you have updated and rescanned everything, repost your HJT log and we can shoot out some specifics, if any remain.
  17. Hmm just been researching this one and its fair to say there are many things that can cause this particular problem. Anyhow I did a search for "opengl32.dll" on my PC and sure enough there it is %windir%\system32. If I look in the version it says: File Version: 5.1.2600.1106 Description: OpenGL Client DLL Copyright: © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. So therefore it must not come with the nVidia drivers? You say you have SP2 installed so therefore the version of this DLL on your system should be 5.2.3790.0. Ok BRAINWAVE! lol i hate it when this happens! Explore to C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 You should hopefully have a backup of opengl32.dll in there. Copy it and paste it into C:\Windows\System32 {may have to reboot here, not sure} Now try your game (hopefully it will work). Since you say you may have deleted the file then we can try that 1st. Not having this file will cause a major problem since it is the runtime for OpenGL -> which links into a file like nvoglnt.dll (for nVidia cards)- this file you have since you updated your drivers but opengl32.dll won't be there since that gets installed with Windows, or a service pack. If the above doesnt work you can always try reinstalling SP2. If nothing works post back as I have collated a whole load of possible fixes from various websites.

Hi Avijay, It seems you are victim of some nasty malware... now rather than me list the things you can do; it has already been done here: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread27764-1.html Download the tools and see how you get on. Problems with Service Pack 2 to Windows XP

Thats certainly interesting! All I can say is that SP2 never bsod'd on my machine... and indexing is off (I mean the service is disabled, not just the checkbox unticked)- so theres a little bit more evidence for your findings

Temp files in my Shared Folders

alec u crack me up! hehe handy programming yes, although i dont do it as a trade as such anymore. i sort of act as a go between- interpreting users requirements into (hopefully) stable, appropriate solutions. by far the best solution is usually the one you can do in 'as it comes/vanilla' XP/NT/whatever-OS. I just have the horrible habit of assuming VB is available since im so used to being at my desk. But top marks to you Mr- WSH comes to the rescue again. So I think we've covered all angles?! nice

Problems accessing a certain website w/ winXP

Looks like u might be right too Alec! this looks like a propagation issue at the moment. Reason is: Alec- IP works Me - everything fine You - fine too Your mate - nothing This means that where we get our DNS info from is somewhat in a state of limbo at ths current time. To be more techy: Alec: Has "A" (A, or address, records describe the IP that a given DNS node has) but no "NS" (NS, or name server, records are used to tell other DNS servers which DNS servers to contact in order to find out information for a given DNS node) Me and you have both Your mate has nothing as yet. This does get a little more detailed however i wont bore you! Hopefully problem solved!
