its better with me- what i mean is it takes a couple of moments to render the page but it does get there in the end. No pics either. I'm using FireFox.....i assume thats why i see things a bit different. Actually I just tried IE6 and thats ok too- page displays ok but no images still. If you remove the forward slash (as u say) things are normal: http://ntcompatible.com/Gta_Vice_city_problem_t30886.html

Hi BDF1215, thx for the pm man it wakes me up sometimes LOL Righty then 1st thing is 1st.... Forget the SP2 stuff and lets just rock on with getting your card up and running. I cant see SP2 causing a problem since I run the Sapphire Radeon 9800XT 256Mb and have never had a problem with it. ***********Verify or do this bit*********** There should only be 2 required steps here: 1: Install DirectX 9.0c 2: Download the correct driver from ATI. 1: If you havent already, install DX9c and make sure you reboot after the install (9c is already in SP2 btw) Download here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=835 This links to the redistributable package of DX9c. You can do a slimmer install but I usually find that just installing the whole lot can help iron out troublesome situations (like this 1!). Cant find the link from MS just yet, but guru3d is a good source. 2: Onto ATI. I know this might sound silly but you can download the wrong driver and also one with lots of bloat! I have never had the need for catalyst - i always install the graphic driver only. Catalyst invokes the .Net framework and a whole host of other stuff. I am of the thought that if my card works well without catalyst and i still have an ample amount of RAM left after windows has started up then why load lots more stuff into RAM?? lol anyway this way works for me. I cant post a direct link to the ATI driver so I will have to guide you through it: First up go to http://www.ati.com Click "Drivers and software" from the menu at the top Click "Windows XP Drivers and Software" Then click "RADEON" Then click "CATALYST 5.5 Windows XP - Driver Download" Now click "download" but make sure in the column named "catalyst component" it does not say "catalyst"!!!! The download should be 26Mb. Install that then reboot. During the installation your driver should be automatically updated. *****This bit should sort you out (hopefully) ***** Go into System in the XP control panel, Hardware, Device Manager and click the cross next to Display adaptors. In there you should have: Radeon 9800 Radeon 9800 secondary ...Or something similar Right click Radeon 9800 and click properties. Click the Driver tab. In here it will probably show that you have vga.sys as your driver. It should have "ATI Technologies Inc." as the driver provider. I assuming that vga.sys is listed above... if so, close the properties screen so that u are back at the device manager screen. Right click "Radeon" and click "Uninstall". Click OK when prompted. Now reboot your PC. When XP starts up it should see that it has no driver for your card and show you an installation wizard. Go through the wizard and make sure it picks (or you tell it to use) the right driver. If this doesn’t work and XP wont install the right driver it probably is because the drivers you have are incorrect in some way. In this case, cancel the installation wizard and download the drivers again from the location above. I hope this goes ok - there are so many variables it’s hard to detail every situation. Any probs just shout. S

Hi Philipp thx for posting back. Just to make it crystal clear im really really not moaning as such and adverts arent a big deal normally! The ad is the one on the right of the screen under the heading of 'sponsor'- I saved the page (it just displayed again)- it links to http://bannerfarm.ace.advertising.com/ba...mnum=0000268139 RE: mouse over, yes it *appears* to activate sound when you mouse over it however the other day it just started playing all by itself! Thx for listening Philipp- of course it wont drive me away lol i have been here too long Have fun

It's fine! GPUs run way hotter than CPUs. 60-80 is ok, although I have to say that the cooler something runs the better but it's all relative. ATI's temps for your GPU are: Maximum recommended ASIC case (or center of die backside for flip chip) - 105°C Absolute maximum rated junction temperature: TJmax 125°C Minimum ambient operating temperature 0°C As you can see, well within specs. If you are little paranoid about the cash you just spent, invest in a high quality cooler for your card- something like Zalman or coolermaster or some other well known company. S

Also try TaskInfo - this might give you a clue as to the running process and where it lives in the PC. Also if you install a firewall (just for the time being), it might be nice enough to say "XXXXX program is trying to access the internet". Thats how you can find out the process name (which might work)..... Are you sure that it SMTP and not SNTP? SNTP might be running off someplace to update your clock every 30 seconds (although it does use UDP, not TCP and also tends to use port 123) - its still an option though. S

Could u try an earlier version of Apache? Ive had problems with Apache 2, especially when running the usual PHP & mysql setup (it was really odd and somethin that i wont bore the forum with!). I use Apache 1.3, PHP 4 and MySQL 4. Granted, there are lots of nice new things with v2, but good old 1.3 is still a very workable solution. If you dont get anywhere with v2, maybe 1.3 is worth a shot. Im not slating v2 at all tho Google reckons that your error is probably a MSI error, not an Apache error. Did you try the manual method (above)? There is lots of talk about this error however 1 'fix' is this: open a command prompt with cmd.exe and cd to your system32. There you need to type: regsvr32 scrrun.dll The above will sort out your windows scripting host. Good luck S

Hi, Not that I am an expert but maybe I could offer a theory? Lets assume (maybe wrongly or rightly) that your new machine can run AGP@8X and your old system is say 4X. That would mean that when you crank up the graphics levels in a game, your graphics card is running around about 2 times the speed on the new machine compared to your old machine. Assuming this is correct then there's a few options: The card really is broke (RMA it) You need to crank up the AGP voltage in the BIOS (in the new machine, just try the smallest increment 1st to see if it helps... 0.1 of a volt) Your power supply isn't cutting it (a possibility although doubtful, u have a quality PSU there) It's maybe a monitor problem...? Anyhow theres a few thoughts, I hope it helps a little. All the best S

Try this: http://www.amdboard.com/sempron.html As for setting it up, as mentioned above, usually you dont need to physically do anything - its all usually done by the BIOS/CMOS. However, it might be useful to post the ASUS model number too. Then we can begin the "turn your pc on, press DEL, then go into... etc. etc"

Also bear in mind that some things will need changing after you have built a new box... such as the Computer name. I guess it's only a pain if these machines will be on the same network. I'm sure theres some other network-related changes that might need to be made- I can't remember them off hand however it's all about making the PC "unique".

XP and 2000 both hang during install DFI UT NF3 250GB
ScinteX replied to Dagon7's topic in Everything New Technology
Maybe you could try downloading the latest BIOS image from DFI and applying that (via floppy/USB)? I noticed that my 875P lanparty board works a lot better now -
Hmmm nice headroom for a bit of an overclock then.... YAY!

If it's not the partition that your OS is installed on, simply open up a Command Prompt and type format x: Where X is the letter assigned to that partition. Or, in My Computer, right click the partition (if it is shown in My Computer) and select "Format". If you want to format the primary partition then download a boot disk from bootdisk.com (or use a bootable floppy that you might already have), boot into DOS and execute the format command above. Obviously note that format=loose data (there are ways to get things back but it is easier if we don't go there). If the partition is not shown in My Computer (for example if it is a format like EXT3 for *nix) then download a good partition manager such as Acronis or Partition Magic and convert the partition to NTFS or FAT32. Have fun S

S.M.A.R.T. status monitor utility for PCI IDE controllers?
ScinteX replied to Phalanx-Imawano's topic in Hardware
You could get hold of some temperature monitoring equipment- a bit like the Thermaltake Hardcano. I have one and it controls all of my fans plus it has thermo sensors (3) that I can put anywhere I like. It has alarm when things get a tad warm The FastTrack has SMART built into it- i.e. it is capable of allowing the OS to read SMART info through the controller and off the hard disks. As far as I can see the SATA150 doesn't support SMART. I run 2 WD Raptors next to each other (they spin at 10000rpm) and they usually sit around 35c or so. Maybe if you are prone to lots of heat you could look at ventilation in general. Maybe a good case is in order, or maybe some more drive coolers? S -
I *think* I worked out what is happening - the first two days of January were a Saturday and Sunday. Outlook says this is week 1. When we get to the end of 2005, from the 26/12 onwards, apparently that's week 1 of 2006! This what *should* happen: The International Organization for Standardization standard for week numbering uses the first week in January that contains a Thursday. Because of this difference, the numbers for weeks can become incorrect. However, it was a Saturday in our case.... so we should be ok. MS products use this as a guide: 1. The week of January 1st. 2. The first full week in January. 3. The first week in January that contains a Thursday. To change it, go into Tools, Options, Calendar options. The options are in the drop-down labelled "First week of year". If you choose "First full week" then it will 'correct' it, depending on your view of what is correct. S

thats good news! You are right- its not perfect however running Renegade is easy because (as you hint at) its an old game. I'm dual booting at the moment for the likes of more intensive games such as Doom 3 and even Joint Ops.

Just my 2p's worth.... my ATI works ok with the livna drivers. My card is a 9800XT and I get something silly like 5500 fps when I run glxgears. It might be a fluke it's working however the point above about ATI is still valid - I had the luck of finding a really good guide about ATI, FC3.. and the drivers (I can't find it right now though). In general nVidia will save your brain from meltdown A general look around seems to indicate nVidia performs better (I'll get shot for saying that) but the FPS is higher. After a bit of tweaking I might get the FPS back up to 12000 like before, however generally, nVidia looks good. I'd build my own PC- as mentioned above the advantages are plenty. I built this machine (below in my sig) and I must say it runs so fast as I went for a best of breed approach (at the time).

I got Cedega from TransGaming. Runs most games pretty well. I am (sadly) addicted to C&C Renegade. It runs ok, but being a directx game my PC has fun coverting all the DirectX into OpenGL... frame rates arent fantastic right now but it's probably down to my default installation (both in FC3 and Cedega)- I'm running an overclocked P4@3.2Ghz, with a 9800XT and Raptor RAID array.... I'd recommend a visit to TransGaming. Once I have it sorted completely XP will die and I will be extremely satisified. The linux gaming world seems to be growing, even the folks over at gamespy havent said no to a port just yet- thier response is something like "if we get enough interest..." Its all good.

ScinteX replied to packman's topic in Networking
There's an extension for FireFox that might help (bandwidth tester): https://addons.update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=178&application=firefox Also lots of other cool little bits and bobs for FireFox in the same place. S -
need help with installing new operaating system on daughter's pc
ScinteX replied to hawghead's topic in Everything New Technology
When you get it back up and working, visit windows update and download the updates, install antivirus and a firewall and also scan your pc regularly with Spybot and/or Ad-aware. I'd recommend Trend Micro's Internet Security suite. It has a good firewall (similar to Zone Alarm), Spam filter, plus parental control, spyware detection and of course antivirus. I also found it not to slow down the machine to a crawl and also it updates automatically without a hitch (these 2 problems I had with Norton). Trend Micro should shout if it sees anykind of trojan activity, hence (hopefully) not repeating what has already happened. Good luck -
With broadband, what happens if you switch the modem off?
ScinteX replied to packman's topic in Hardware
Hiiii Yep it will remian. The easiest way to imagine this is like: Your router is like a little PC that connects to the internet. Inside the router is your login and password for your ISP's ADSL network. When you turn on the router, it starts up and initialises it's DHCP (for networking), then goes on to login into the ADSL world. When you turn your PC on, it goes off to your router and gets an IP address. You then tell your PC to use the router for internet access. When you turn your PC off it just hands back the IP address to the router, then shutsdown. The router just sits there waiting for the next client to come along (be it your PC again or another PC/device). BTW my router runs linux! It's only purpose in life is networking, firewall and loging onto ADSL. -
If Directx is a happy bunny (in dxdiag) then I guess there are 2 things to do: 1 - Verify what version of DirectX your games need (usually 8 but some newer ones need 9, 9b or 9c), and check this version in dxdiag. 2- Go over to ATI.com and download the latest drivers. On my 9800XT I use the driver below. This one doesn't use Catalyst as I find Catalyst comes with a load of bloat and needs the .NET framework. Visit (For Windows XP): https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27 And download the driver next to "Display Driver, Control Panel, WDM Integrated Driver". Install that and it might play ball. EDIT: If you follow the link above, it doesnt take you to the driver. Therefore: Click the above link Select your OS (XP in my case) Select Radeon Select CATALYST 5.4 Windows XP - Driver Download Then download the driver described above. At time of writing it's 24.6Mb in size.

Im also in the "ok it works now what" boat. Here's some things I have been up to lately: Apart from installing some useful apps (MP3 support for players, DVD stuff, a few browsers etc.) I finally managed to get Sun's Java installed and working, plus Flash (Flash was easy, Java was a pain). Getting my ATI card to work with 3D support. That was fun since I managed to learn all about adding mirrors to Yum (similar to APT), and my kernel. For the ATI drivers to work I had to go to a specific version of the kernel since the latest kernel (that came via yum) wasnt supported by the drivers at Livna. So I managed to rollback to the default kernel (and edit grub.conf in the process) and the install the latest kernel that livna had a driver for and then the drivers themselves. Rebooted and all is well. Next up was a trip over to transgaming and getting my grubby mitts on Cedega. Now I can play most of my Windows games in Fedora, which is great (especially since I only really had my XP partition still around for the gaming element). In this process I learnt more stuff about sound cards in linux and also a bit about how graphics are handled. I'm still going and I think I've got the bug now since I can't stop playing with Fedora- the late nights are now explained Anyhow I'm well impressed with this whole world - it's all good.

DOH! "The Websense category "Alternative Journals" is filtered". Hmm one for home then!
