    I can't UNZIP anything!

DIW = dead in the water (sorry, old navy talk, lol) I getting to my box sporadically right now, moving tomorrow so... but I just tried a zip file that was already on my box and it opened fine so apparently the zip utility I downloaded does work okay which leads me back to believing that something is wrong with majorgeeks site since the 2 zips that I've tried again just now (after re-downloading) don't open. Can you download/unzip something from majorgeeks right now with no problem? I'll get to your suggestions ASAP (maybe today, maybe over the weekend )... I already miss my box LOL. Thanks for the reply, I'll keep you informed. BTW: is there anyway to pull up all my previous posts? It's such a hassle for me everytime I come here to lookup a previous conversation, prolly just haven't looked in the right place yet. TIA. (thanks in advance) lol

    Untitled thread

I can't unzip anything (as of 2 days ago) = DIW on the net! At first I thought it was because the last few downloads all came from majorgeeks and I was hoping it was their problem at first (sorry major) but I just tried downloading from another site and I get the same problem. I also downloaded 2 different freeware unzip utilities but they both say that the zipped files are corrupted or are not in the correct format. I imagine it has something to do with file associations but that's not really my forte. Any help would really be appreciated because if I don't get this fixed, I'll need to resort to using my NTbackup file. Thanks.
  3. talking about fried-brain lol, after messing with 4 different vendor applications yesterday and 2 of those this morning, I started from scratch and after a reboot, was in with the QSOFT RamDisk in 2 minutes NO PROBLEM... it pushed it's own size limit out to 3MB for me and that was it! Thx Christiaan @ QSOFT and Alec here! now back to all those yummy tweaks that Alec mentioned earlier in this thread...
  4. Thx for the reply, I finally got the new drive populated about an hour and 1/2 ago, AFTER REBOOTING but I still couldn't move files from the default windows IE cache folder to my new B:\ drive, matter of fact, right click\copy is not even an option from the IE temp folder. I just created a directory on the new drive and pointed to it after the TOOLS\IE OPTIONS\ SETTINGS\ MOVE FOLDER steps even though it wouldn't let me set an allocation size for the new folder on B:\, it did however populate the new drive with about 10 cookies or so from recent surfing. All of this has been with ARSOFT as of the last try, even MS Ramdisk didn't work a'la Microsoft direct (I'm HOME so the directions didn't work since they were talking GROUPS, even though they said...) I can see now that it is going to take some more tweaking since I seem to have a cookie from each recently viewed site (9 or 10 over last hour or so) but tons of new GIF & PNG image files still got written to the old IE temp folder so it isn't really doing me any good so far. Again, appreciate your response... catching up to the new century LOL. Just went back and looked at it again... when attempting to set the new drive to the drop spot for the IE temp folder, it still has the default folder being used (hence reason I still have all them new files in my default folder) and when trying to change it to the new drive/folder, it wants me to "pick a number between 1 and 0 for how much space the temp file folder will need to use". This is what I was refering to when saying that 0, .5 and/or 1 do not work... so irregardless of what version etc. I'm using, it WON'T ACCEPT ANY CHOICE. That last sentence is IRT your reply: Depends a great deal on WHICH one you choose, if you have the right one for the Operating System you use, & the specs of configuring it (depends on OEM (maker) of the software based Ramdisks in question). I believe the reason it is taking the cookies is because of the regedit I made which affected the HISTORY key and the COOKIE key. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\History HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\History With the current setting, I'm loosing all my cookies apparently so I'll prolly put it back to the default cookie folder setting so my cookie utility will take care of that but that still leaves the problem with SP2 not letting me set the allocation size for the new folder on the TOOLS\IE OPTIONS\SETTINGS\MOVE FOLDER step (also, not selecting a size gives the error above too). Among other places earlier, I was taking direction from here: http://www.deny.de/hosted/df/ramdisk.htm Note the 2nd paragraph under "3. Using Ramdisk:" this "just slide the bar" part for setting the size limits doesn't work! Prolly getting close, just around the bend I'm sure, thx. 5. Cenatek's RocketDrive sounds great, got it on my wish list... but for now, I'm not having luck editing any of the "software" ramdrives that I've installed. I can create a new "B:\" drive no problem but when I go to point the I.E temp files folder to it (the whole reason I wanted it, although my EYES ARE WIDE OPEN NOW!, thx Alec!), it gives me an error to pick a number between 1 and 0 to use for an amount of space to set aside for the temp files (this is seperate from the actual drive allocation, no problem there) and of course, there isn't a number in that range. No, 0, 1 and 1.5 do not work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bottom line: I have used several free downloads today for this project and they all do their part creating the virtual drive, it's just that now SP2 won't let me set an allocation for the I.E temp files folder when trying to move it to this new "drive"

Problems with Service Pack 2 to Windows XP

I stopped reading the posts in this thread after the 4th or 5th one and basically skimmed thru the rest but there seems to be alot of people out there having problems with the upgrade, I HAD NONE! I did experience some slowdown before the SECOND reboot (prolly due to PF stuff, etc.) but after that all was fine, EXCEPT: the Task Scheduler is no longer reliable (on my machine anyway). Symantec acknowledges a problem on their end with Norton AV being kicked off from the SP2 scheduler and is working on it but my Ace Utilities and even Ntbackup no longer kickoff reliably even though I have deleted the old entries and reactivated new ones for each application. That being said, I see no difference for the non-networked home user (I am standalone), including NO SYSTEM DEGRADATION but NO VISIBLE IMPROVEMENTS either! Then again, perhaps improvements working at the same system speed as before, albeit unbeknownst to me, is an improvement in itself. Bottom line, they really need to fix the Task Scheduler problem but other than that, no difference to me so I'll suffer (perform manual kickoffs) until the fixes come versus uninstalling SP2... but to each his own. G/L.

    People online

FYI: You touched on the reason I was directed here earlier: I was looking for the solution to a problem and this site came up along with multiple other ones while going thru Yahoo/Google searches, gotta go with what works, now this site is marked thanks to help from all those knowledgeable. Just because I've been a mainframe programmer for 8+ years doesn't mean I know the inner workings of the PC world (which is why I don't post much here, AT ALL) but I'm definitely learning more everyday now and maybe I won't have to ever go back to them ugly green screens after all (been out of work since November and now moving too so...)!

Windows Media Player 10: Anyone tried it?

I hear ya Adam, thx for the plug, I'll check it out. FWIW, this entry never popped up before (had WMP9 already) and Bazooka defintely called it a GUID (I did COPY/PASTE above). I wanted to double-check your theory (even though the entry didn't look familiar to others I see everyday) but I didn't save a Bazooka log from that run so I just now created a log, but alas it shows "as is". Anyway, I'll be more attentive next time... P.S. It still works too.

Windows Media Player 10: Anyone tried it?

I think it just became available on Thursday Alec, lol. Anyway, on my daily Bazooka scan (after Ad-Aware, before SpyBot), I was informed of a Global Uniquie IDentifier (GUID) registry entry that I have never been notified of before; this was after downloading WMP10 yesterday and NOT checking the box to send my GUID to vendors, etc. At first, I was hoping that maybe they just started checking for this registry entry (hence my first notification), but then I saw discussion in their helpfile IRT previous WMP versions. Other than that, I just use these players for simple music listening during my day-trading so as long as the music plays (FREE!), it's cool with me. Just thought you should know... GLTA.
  10. I've often wondered if there is a way to have the columns in the PROCESSES tab sorted according to the user's liking upon opening, i.e, I always sort the MEM USAGE column so that the processes taking up the most memory are on top of the list; does anybody know how to tweak the registry to do this? TIA.

    XP (HOME) Task Manager tweak

You've been very helpful and considerate, thank you for your time. (of course, I'll keep checking back...) Made it back in time to edit this post (after reboot) and I have to say that although it doesn't solve my inquiry, sysinternals utility is much better than the one from the posted article in the last msg. Not your fault of course ScinteX , but you may want to check it out on your own. TA.

    XP (HOME) Task Manager tweak

Thanks Adam. I've been using Process Explorer (from sysinternals) as of late but this feature has always been in the back of my head for Bill's taskmgr, appreciate your efforts. If you find an answer, please post where/how you found it so I know to check there for other things in the future. TIA.
