It could be because of McAfee. Try this: 1. Click START, and then click RUN. 2. In the Open box, type msconfig.exe, and then click OK. 3. Click the STARTUP tab. 4. Click to clear the check boxes that refer to McAfee VirusScan, and then click OK. 5. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer. Then try running scandisk again.

Hi there, Are you running any antivirus software? Win98 and McAfee 5.1 has some complications when it comes to scandisk. Does this PC connect to the internet? you might have a virus, its known that soe viruses can stop scandisk from working, I think its called "Fun Love" or something like that, do a search for the following file "Flcss.exe". (but, its not the only virus that stops scandisk). And Defrag, this could also be because of a virus, or because of not enough free disk space or it could just take long because you deleted a lot of files and folder and/or temp and temp internet files and now defrag is trying to free up that space. Check for any virus, check avail. disk space and if there was a virus and you got rid of it try scandisk again and with defrag, just let it run through the night. If there was no virus to be found try to run scandisk in "Safe Mode", when the computer starts up press F8 a couple of times till you get a boot menu, select "Safe Mode" and once in windows try scandisk. Let me know if you managed CIAO

Hi, 1. What operating system did you install? 2. How old is your hard drive? It could be that your hard drive is not too healthy no more. 3. Do you have any large files on your PC? Like Movies or game images, the standard windows Defrag has problems with defraging a hard drive with big files. If this is the case, get some software like "Diskeeper", it works pretty well, even with big files, including the "page file"

unable to create dial-up connection (xp)

I've seen this problem before, try to un-install the modem driver, restart the PC and re-install the modem driver. Please let me know if this worked. -
Yes, it has a 10/100/1000 onboard LAN card. It looks like I am just not one of those lucky people, I'm busy getting used to it. The problem is that I'm not close to the router, the router is downstairs on the DSL in my father-in-laws office and my PC is upstairs in my room and I cant have any cables and stuff lying around, its not my house. If I could've dont it that way I would've used LAN, I only went to wireless cause I did not have any other option. OK, so, it looks like I am up to my ears in bad luck, thanks anyway for all the help, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for all the help, I will have to find a job before I can buy anything new. But, I have a USB wireless dongle, its a Fibreline "WLAN Mini USB Dongle" FCC ID: PANWL1207 I've tried this as well but I dont have a cooking clue what I am doing with Linux, yet Do you think I would be able to use the USB one? Thanks
-
Yes, exactly, that is correct, thats my card, the one and only I do have regular PCI slots, 5 of them, but the WiFi takes up the space of Slot 5, therefore WiFi and slot 5 cant be shared, and I think it might even se slot 5 as bus.

It brings tears to my eyes to see people happy. Not a problem Wiz, it was a pleasure and enjoy your "new" CD-ROM drive. CIAO

Oh yes, I'm sorry, I forgot that you are using Windows 98. Go to the following registry key : HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer and then on the right you will find the entry : NoDriveTypeAutoRun OK, double click that entry and in the value field you need to type in : 95 00 00 00 Click ok, close the registry and restart your PC I hope this helps

Hi, I would suggest that you get a antivirus program and update it, cause if you had a virus on 2000 and you just updated instead of format and re-instlalling you would still have virus. I had that smae problem of a users PC at a company I worked at in South Africa, but it was a couple of years ago, I cant remember which virs it was.

Sure, I dont mind helping at all, I was a knowledge hunger teenager once too, believe it or not :-) well, I'm not a teenager anymore but I'm still hungry for knowledge. OK, click START > RUN > type in REGEDIT and click ok. Then a new window will open, but, dont play around in there, it is very sensitive and if you do something wrong your PC wont work at all anymore. En the left you'll see the 5 important keys, now you'll have to browse them like you would browse in explorer for a file HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM ControlSet001 Control Services Cdrom then you will see on the right there is a couple of files, one of them is AUTORUN, which is the one you'll need, double click on it and it will open a little box, the the VALUE field type in 1 and then click ok. Let me know if you managed

OK Wiz, if it only opens when the IDE is connected it means that the PC is giving it some sort of signal to open the CD-ROM. The autorun problem you can go into the registry and looking for the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Services/Cdrom/Autorun Make sure the value for Autorun is set to 1, you can double click on Autorun, then it will open a box and then you can enter 1 and press ENTER. Close registry editor and restart. Another reason for this could be performance enhancing software, I've experienced some that disable certain windows functions to speed up your PC. What is the last thing you did/or installed on your PC before this started happening? The prob with the CD-ROM opening the whole time, now, I've seen this problem with these remote controlled CD-ROM's you get a little IR remote conrtol to open/close, play and so on and in some (very little) cases with virus/spyware.

What I did back home was to build a couple of wooden shelves on the wall and I put everything in there, then I did not have to walk over it and crush it.
-
If you open the side cover you will see the back of the CD-ROM, there will be the power cable in the CD-ROM and a long flat cable, that is the IDE cable, you can just pull that cable out, but look at the way it was in, you need to put it back the same way. If its a grey cable it should have a red stripe on the one side which indicates point 1 and if its a black cable it should have a white stripe.

Problem with Mandrake 10.1 install and SATA drive
Wicked101 replied to RyanC111's topic in Everything Linux
I also had problems with Linux on my S-ATA, I could not get it to see my HDD, I tried all kinds of Linux S-ATA drivers, let me tell you, it took me a good while to find some, but at the end of the day I could not get it to work. After a week I updated my BIOS and found some changes in the BIOS regarding my S-ATA, so I decided to give Linux another go, and there it installed with absolutely no problem at all, I was amazed, I did not even need any additional drivers. But, I still have the WLAN problem though. -
OK, lets first determine whether its a software or hardware problem, turn off your PC, unplug the IDE cable (Asuming its an int. CD-ROM) but leave the power connected, now, turn on your PC and see if it still opens. If it still opens there is something wrong with your CD-ROM

To copy and paste from a dos screen (command promt), just for interests sake: Once you've done what you wanted in the command promt and you are ready to copy you need to right click anywhere on the black, in the popup menu click MARK, then you can use your mouse to drag a white box over all the writing you want to copy, once that is done you need to press ENTER, and thats it, then you can paste normally in your favorite word processing program.

Its been a while since I've played Sims and I gave my Sims with all expansions to my sister-in-law, but as far as I can remember it needs the Sims CD, it starts installing then it asks for the sims CD and when its done it asks for the expansion CD again. And the file, well, I'm not too sure, I think it might be cab2 or datacab2 or something like that, I could be wrong, its been a while and I might be confusing myself a little bit with some other games, its possible if you sit infront of a PC 24 hours a day
