If you could grow up in another decade, which would it be in the last 100 years?

1900, then I can invent some things, now there is too much stuff already and my brain is tired of thinking of new things. -
As far as I know "AdamVJackson is still around here somewhere, I got an email from him about a week or so ago.

I dont get any errors when I do this modprobe thing, but it still dont work when I do the wlcardconfig. If I run ifconfig eth0 I gat the LAN settings and if I use wlan0 it says it cant find the device. I think I might have this thing sorted out, but I need to know where the "rc.local" file is so that I can finish it and see if it works, if so I'll post everything. Thanks

Sorry, between Linux and Windows it doesn't line up nicely, here is a screen print of it. Thanks for the help so far. LSMOD

I'm trying my best and I really want to get to know linux, and if these people dont want to support linux drivers then tell me what I need to know or learn to be able to create/write drivers and I will do so, if no one wants to do it why cant I, I know I can do anything, I just need a little push in the right direction. PS: Where do I find the "rc.local" file, please? Oh yes, here is the result from "lsmod" root@fuct:~# lsmod Module Size Used by snd_mixer_oss 18688 0 snd 47588 1 snd_mixer_oss iptable_nat 24484 0 ip_conntrack 33028 1 iptable_nat ip6table_filter 6144 1 ip6_tables 20736 1 ip6table_filter md5 7680 1 ipv6 241248 6 iptable_filter 6272 1 ip_tables 19712 2 iptable_nat,iptable_filter lp 13096 0 autofs 18048 1 af_packet 21000 0 agpgart 29868 0 cmpci 42804 0 opl3 17164 1 cmpci mpu401 28548 1 cmpci sound 75496 2 opl3,mpu401 soundcore 11232 3 snd,cmpci,sound gameport 7680 1 cmpci sis900 20356 0 crc32 8064 1 sis900 parport_pc 37568 1 parport 36936 2 lp,parport_pc 8250 34480 0 serial_core 22528 1 8250 ohci1394 33796 0 ieee1394 302008 1 ohci1394 ohci_hcd 22276 0 uhci_hcd 31760 0 usbcore 95840 4 ohci_hcd,uhci_hcd ds 17284 0 yenta_socket 20480 0 pcmcia_core 56772 2 ds,yenta_socket apm 20332 2 ide_scsi 17156 0 rtc 14920 0 ext3 110440 1 jbd 69284 1 ext3

I've sent them emails and to linuxquestions and I've posted on their forums but not one person has come back to me. I think my biggest problem is that I dont know what the hell I'm doing:) I'm still pretty new to linux, I'm not used to having so much trouble, I've never had a problem that I could not solve.

AAAaaarrrgggghhhhhh, I'm so close to giving up, but I cant, I have to do this, I want to do this. Everything I try do dont work, I'm just very stupid still at this stage and its busy frustrating me so much. All those websites with there drivers and readme's and FAQ's, they dont explain properly. Like, it says Prerequisites: To build linux-wlan-ng you will need: -Configured kernel source code blah blah blah How the hell do I configure and/or install the kernel? where is the linux source directory? How do I check and/or enable kernel usb support? How do I get this to work??? AAaarrrggghhhh, GGGRRRRRrrrr Going nuts, been sitting infront of this PC for 10 hours straight, its 03h14 in the morning now and I'm going to bed now, maybe I can manage something else in the morning. Good night ppl, sleep well

But Linux says that the driver is already installed, like when I ran that "lsusb", it said Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0457:0162 Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. Is there any way I can test it?
-
Hey, that means that my Linux pick it up, cause it says the ID is "0x0457:0x0162", and that is what it picked up when I ran that "lsusb" you said I should, nice, now that it looks like its found it, how can I get it to work? please
-
OK, and now I have this Driver and Patch from one of these 2 sites you gave me, what I would like to know is how do I install them now, please? They dont tell me on the site how to do it. Thanks Wicked

I just opened my WLAN USB Dongle/Stick and found the following. On one side it has a chip that says: SIS162U On the other side it has a chip that says: AIROHA AL2210B Does this mean anything to you, might it help, I hope this helps

Maybe I can be of some assistance here, I hope. You can install XP, then download the software called bart's PE Builder, with this you can create a Live CD like Knoppix, but with the windows interface and you can add all kinds of programs to that like CD Brning software and Partition Magic. Then you can boot from the CD anytime you want/need to into a live windows session running from the CD and run partition magic and install only Linux without having Windows close to your hard drive.

Check out this site. Thanks for the help so far, I really hope we will be able to get this working, cause I honestly dont have the money to buy anything (not even fast food) as I'm still unemployed and have been for the past 8 months, but if I had the money I would've bought one that works cause I really want this to work. Thanks for the links, I'm busy looking at them now, mine looks like that FL-WL240U

I was experimenting a bit:) hee hee, I played with the wlcfg-default file, changed some things inside for the settings of my D-Link with the WEP and all, I aslo read in one of those files in the /etc/wlan folder that I need to create a file called wlan-<SSID>, which I did, I just made a copy of the default one and renamed it to that with my SSID and edited the file with all settings and removing the "#'s" to the things I need, but it still dont work:( like I said, I'm still very new to linux, still learning. My head is flat now, I got no more ideas about how to get this to work.

When I create any share I make it a hidden share by adding "$" after the sharename, like, after you created the folder on PC Home1, you click the sharing box, then in the sharename field (if the share is called "share") you add the "$", then it should look like this -> Share$ The "$" hides the share, and if someone browses the PC for shares they cant see it that easy and the only way you can connect to it then is if you add the "$" at the end of the string when you create the shortcuts like I explained in the previous post. eg: \\Home2\Share$ Without the "$" you wont be able to connect to that share. Originally posted by BabyBoy--: Quote: also what do you mean by safe : other people can see/download my files or other people can see/download/delete/etc Well, the right/wrong person with the correct knowledge could do whatever he wants, some people even uses open PC's to save their data like an online storage server.

Here is the link to that projector thing I told you about http://www6.tomshardware.com/howto/20041201/index.html
-
Hmmmm, I've never tried that myself, it sounds pretty interesting, but, I've seen where a guy uses a flatscreen to make a projector to using one of these old school projectors to watch movies on the wall, it was pretty cool. Back on the subject, I'm sure someone has done that before and you should be able to find some diagram on the internet to do so, I will look for you as well, I would love to know how to do this. If you cant find anything you can try http://www.tomshardware.com/ and ask them to test something like that, its there where I saw the projector thing. Please let us know if you find something.

I had the same problem when I installed Service Pack 2, there is 3 thing you could one: 1. Like APK said, put the drive in another NTFS system and recover your data. 2. Boot with the XP CD like you want to install it from scratch, skip the fisrt repair, its useless, once it finds the OS on the hard drive it'll ask you again if you would want to repair, if it cant find the OS try the next fix. 3.Still booted with the XP CD, re-run the installation of XP, when it gets to the section where you should/could select/change partitions on your hard drive dont format or delete partitions, just select the partition that you originally installed XP on and re-install it over it, it wont format your hard drive, but none of your other programs previously installed will work, then you can re-install your CD Burning software and make backups of your data with no problems, then you can format and re-install.

Not too worry:) no problem at all, at least you replied (like they say, rather late than never:)) Thanks for the reply and all the help so far, and I'm sorry for possibly getting on anyones nerves, but once I get my Knoppix working on the WLAN I'll start learning more and more about it and soon I'll be able to help out on this site too. OK, back to the point, I tried /sbin/lsusb but it did not work, so I tried it with just the /lsusb and that worked, I think, this is what it gave me/us Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0457:0162 Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000 Hmmm, translation?.....

Another thing you could try (once the search is sorted out) is to add a button under the "Subject" field that says "Click Here to Find Similar Posts", then they could find similar posts and maybe even with the solution so that users dont add a duplicate post.

Here is a photo of my FiberLine WLAN Mini USB Dongle I tried using "NDISWRAPPER" to use my windows driver and it all went well till the final step then it said its already installed. Then I tried "WLCARDCONFIG" and it says "No Wireless Network Found" What do I do now? please I'm still slow at Linux, the stuff I did is what I read on the internet:) (I know I almost sounded a little bit clever there with all those fancy commands and stuff:)) Thanks Wicked101

( i mean not only what is inside a "share" folder) It is possible, but like Sampson said, its not very safe. Another thing, your C: drive already has an Administrator share on it, and in some cases you can connect to one PC but not the other in a workgroup by clicking START -> RUN -> type in \\home1\c$ This is using the same examples as before, replace home1 with your computername, normally the older installation can connect to the newer installation that way, but not the other way around. If there is more than one folder you would like to share you can do so, but to only have the one folder is the safest, you can copy into that folder and cut & paste from the other PC, then that folder can be empty if you get some nosey surfers. In my experience, I tried to share the whole C: drive once and it corrupted my pagefile and my PC could not start up anymore.
