    Linux 4 PC-Based Recording Studio

Excellent Article DapperDan! Im going to suss out that software the author mentioned as i wish to use Linux in a mastering format. How can anyone say Linux Sucks? So far ive been impressed, even just on an aesthetics viewpoint, cleaner, softer lines. FASTER as not as much crap is loaded and running. So YOU have to go out and get things for your hardware etc, Linux is FREE, so if it means i go out and obtain drivers, extra bits of software (which are free too) then i will, called giving a bit back. Installing Mandrake (i'm a linux virgin)

Im a newbie as well. Installed Mandrake 10. You can have a functional operating system off of the first CD. I did get a little confused with the partitioning step during install but i think i was more worried about losing what was on my other HDD. Once i worked it through my thick skull that i was viewing the Hard drive B partition... hit Clear/Delete and started a fresh. Second time round with install took about 25 minutes. Damien

    Whats your kernel?

This may seem a silly question but how do i find out what Kernel shell i have? I am trying to setup the net and Mandrake 10.0 found the modem, i grabbed a linux driver from Conexant (manufacturer). I ran a config BEFORE i put the linux driver on (hey im testing the waters) and it came up with "Warning: Sorry we only use 2.4 and above Kernels" I figured that was fine and installed the driver. The diagnostic was updated and matched the modem perfectly. Went to setup the internet connection and the same warning came up when it got to the modem stage. I wouldve thought that Mandrake 10.0 being a fairly new release thatd itd have a higher kernel? Or is this something i can freely update? Damien

    mandrake install hang

Along similar lines....... I finally got the last cd of Mandrake 10. Chucked the first cd in and booted up. Went to upgrade option instead of install and it went through the process. When it went to boot up the screen just flickered, went to a prompt with Login:.... Tried to upgrade again but to no avail. Decided to do a proper full install and it works perfectly now. Is this a known issue with Mandrake? That the Upgrade option doesnt really work? Damien

Downloading as i type this. Looks good. Which will bring me to another question.. hey its my thread might as well keep it all together... Is there a list of "must have" software for linux that doesnt come on say the Mandrake cds? Rather than you guys always answering the same thing if there is a link with such a discussion etc point me to it. Or post up here. Damien

    Changing preferences.

Thanks a lot. Ive been lurking about for about a week now reading a lot. It seems many people log on with "im new, help me" and only have one post. I tried hard to avoid a newbie question but hey... have to start some where! Enjoy the day Damien

    Changing preferences.

I recently installed Mandrake 10.0 Am enjoying it nicely. I am sort of clicking about, getting a feel for things and i noticed the Root folder is locked. I click on it and it says "you dont have permission" etc. I went into configure computer, security and gave myself membership to everything in the box (ticked everything)but it still remains locked. How can i gain full root access? I assume its something i inadvertly did whilst during install. If it means reinstalling it then thats fine. wasnt too hard. Also on boot up (using Lilo) is there anyway to stop the counter? So the splash screen just sits there? Or even better.. have it boot to Windows first as my girlfriend has this habit of turning the machine on and walking away..... Hey i gotta keep the peace here! Damien
