I've been seeing this problem on several forums (mostly dealing with WinXP) but as yet I've not seen a solution that corresponds to the problem I've been having.
This is a problem I've been dealing with for the last couple of days and its starting to drive me up the wall.
I did a favor for a friend 2 days ago, when I borrowed their scanner and downloaded a driver and program from the manufacturer's website (the scanner is a HP5100C & the software and driver were for Wins 95/98/NT 4.0) I had thought that anything that was written for 4.0 would be forwardly compatible with Win2000 Pro so I didn't think there would be a problem.
However, when I rebooted after installing the software, the computer was running *extremely* slowly...when it got to the point of just past the 'splash' screen, it rebooted. Then rebooted again, and a third time. Finally, on the fourth try it booted successfully but it took nearly 30 minutes to completely boot up and then I was unable to do anything that didn't take approximately 5 minutes to complete each process. I've been using my wife's computer to research the problem, I've found many instances of this happening with people running XP, but none that seem to really address the problem I've been experiencing. I went so far as to download the CWShredder software and run it on the computer, it did indeed find an instance of 'CoolWebSearch' and removed it, but upon reboot, the problem remained. I've downloaded and moved the program HiJackThis! but haven't been able to run it yet, even if/when I do run it I'm hard pressed to get the information from one computer to the next and I'd really like to avoid having to reformat the HD and reinstall the OS and software if possible.
I tried running my SpySweeper software, but with the CPU maxed at 100% its going to take a year to get through the program completely. I've tried to run Norton Anti-Virus, but it too incurs the same problem with the CPU being hogged with whatever is causing the logjam.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I was able to run HiJackThis! and got the following results, since I've never run the program before, I really don't know what its saying.
