    Need Help With Java Install

I just received my 6 disk set of Mandrake Linux PowerPack 10.1 and did a clean install. Everything installed perfectly and all hardware was recognized. I couldn't be happier! And, I've finally picked up enough on Linux that configuring programs worked pretty well. I also installed Firefox 1.0, which is my favorite browser. In installed Firefox in home/zenarcher. Now, my problem is that when accessing many websites, I'm needing a Plugin for Firefox....for Java. I'm not sure how to go about downloading and installing Java. Also, not sure if this needs to be some sort of plugin associated with Firefox, or what. Could someone please explain and give me a walk-through for downloading and installing Java, so it will be available for Firefox and anywhere else I may require it? Thanks much, zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

I made a linkin home/zenarcher/firefox-installer/plugins for nphelix.so Now that I've done that, when I go to a website requesting that I download the Realplayer plugin, I no longer get the message that the RealPlayer plugin is not installed. It is appearing on the website, like Firefox has the RealPlayer plugin. Only problem...I don't hear anything. Sound is working fine on as far as everything else on the system is concerned. Just no sound when trying to use RealPlayer plugin in Firefox. I also found a website which seemed to indicate I'd have to have a symbolic link to nphelix.xpt in the firefox/plugins, which I moved by dragging, just as with the other files, but still no sound. I can open RealPlayer, itself and everything looks fine, sound is not muted or anything. zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

Hmm....now that I have already installed RealPlayer, is there anything I can do to get the plugin into the home/zenarcher/firefox-installer/plugin area where I need it? I don't remember anything like that when I went through the install screens...but maybe it did and put the file somewhere other than where I needed it....like in usr/local/mozilla/plugins What do you think? The only file I see common to Realplayer and also in Mozilla plugins is nphelix.so I wonder if that could be the one I need to make a link in firefox plugins? zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

Dan, I am using Nautilus. I went through all the folders and files in RealPlayer and I don't see one called rpnp.so Maybe I'm doing something wrong. I downloaded and installed the latest version of RealPlayer....10.5, I believe it is. I find that a nearby can of beer really helps when struggling with Linux. Beer and tenacity... zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

I appreciate the help with the terminal window. Now, if you or Dan can figure out what I'm doing wrong with RealPlayer, I should be able to leave you alone for awhile....probably not long, though. I can't find the rpnp.so which Dan had me looking for to move to the Firefox plugins in home. zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

Dan, I've found that one should not even sit down and attempt anything in Linux without a beer within easy reach. I did it all through Nautilus. I just went into the RealPlayer folders and I can't find anything called rpnp.so Maybe I'l looking for the wrong thing. There are a ton of files and folders there...but not that file. I downloaded and installed the latest RealPlayer...I think it's 10.5, if I remember correctly. Am I looking for the wrong file? zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

I don't have a clue how I did it, but managed to drag the file from mozilla plugins to the home/zenarcher/firefox-installer/plugins and tried the link requiring Java and it's working! I won't argue with the how's or why's...since it's working. The icon has a little lock on it and properties show it is owned by root, but I guess that isn't a problem, since it's working. I'm wondering...can I do the same thing (if I can figure out what it was I did) with RealPlayer, so it will work with Firefox? I would need to know what file in RealPlayer I'd need to drag to the Firefox plugins in the home/zenarcher area, if anyone could help. zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

I opened a terminal and logged in as su....then tried to run this command... ln -s /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so ~/.mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin.so Apparently, I was in the wrong place, as I get no such files or directory...I'm lost, as usual. I'm beginning to think I should avoid Java and RealPlayer websites. Maybe you can offer a dumber version... Frustrating...I went into Nautilus and I can see the libjavaplugin_oji.so but can't get the option to make a link...probably because I'm not logged in as root in Nautilus, but I don't know how. Seems that would be an easy way...then cut and paste the link to the mozilla/plugins folder in my Firefox folder in home/zenarcher...where one other plugin for Firefox resides. zenarcher [Edited by zenarcher on 2004-11-18 17:41:52]

Here is what I got from the Firefox directory in Home... There is no way to auto install it, as if you get the Need Additional Plugin at a Java page in Firefox, you are advised that it must be installed manually with Linux. I'm not the brightest star in the sky when it comes to Linux, but I'm just wondering if that symbolic link has to be in the plugins located with the firefox-installer....in the home/zenarcher/ folder, rather than in the usr/lib/ area, due to my installing it in home? Here's what they say on the Firefox site, but not sure how or where to do this. On Linux 1. Download the Linux version of the Java SDK. 2. When the download is finished, execute the .bin file as root and follow the prompts. 3. When the installation has completed, run this command in the plugins directory of your Firefox installation: ln -s /path/to/j2sdk_nb/j2sdk1.4.2/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin.so zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

I'm guess I'm still in trouble with Java. I thought it was working, but was in a hurry, as I had to go out of town yesterday. Anyway, this morning I've tried to go to several website requiring Java and still get the message with Firefox that I need to install a plugin for Jave. I've also installed RealPlayer, but that's not working as a plugin with Firefox, either. Since I'm such a newbie at this, I'll see if I can get Java working first, then ask for some help with RealPlayer. I don't know if this has any bearing on the problem, but I installed Firefox to home/zenarcher/ and I see there is a hidden mozilla/plugins/ folder there and it has two flashplayer files, but shows nothing else. I did go into the usr/lib/mozilla/plugins and see the following two files: libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so.bak I hope that helps answer...but if I can check something else, please let me know. zenarcher [Edited by zenarcher on 2004-11-18 07:58:50] [Edited by zenarcher on 2004-11-18 08:02:57]

    Need Help With Java Install

Okay and I see that is one of the hidden files I found in the home directory. I'm not really sure how to do the symbolic link, though...maybe you can help with that. Everything would be fine in the home directory, as I'm the only one who uses this computer. My wife has her own and I have a shop computer, as well, all on the network, but I'm the only user on mine. zenarcher

What is your favorite Linux distro and why?

I am very new to Linux, but I've had great success with Mandrake 10.0 and just went to Mandrake 10.1 PowerPack. I did not encounter one single hardware issue with this install and it was nicely automated. I tried SUSE 9.1 and just couldn't get it to work with my system. It installed fine, but the system would freeze up after between 5 seconds and a few minutes. I had to keep one hand on the mouse and the other hand on the computer power button. First, the ethernet connection would freeze....immediately followed by the entire system freezing...You'd see the clock freeze and knew the only way out was a power button reset. I've not experienced anything like that with Mandrake. I installed a DVD burner yesterday and not a hitch. Mandrake found it and set it up the first time I powered up. As I say, I'm very new to Linux...only worked with MS for about 14 years...but Linux was all new. I wouldn't go back to MS for anything, since I've gotten Mandrake. I think much has to do with your hardware, from my limited experience. zenarcher

I always seem to forget about those hidden files. Anyway, I did find /home/zenarcher/.mozilla/plugins in the hidden files of the home directory. Not sure how you find them from a terminal, if I need to do so. Maybe Dan or someone can direct me a bit closer, but I sure appreciate the help and the reminder about hidden files. Here is what I got on the find: [root@localhost zenarcher]# find / -name libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/jdk-1.4.2_05/jre/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/jdk-1.4.2_05/jre/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/java/jre1.5.0/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so zenarcher

    Need Help With Java Install

Apparently, I jumped the gun on this one. I did install Java, but when I go to a website needing Java with Firefox, I'm still getting the notice that I need to have the Java plugin, so apparently I don't have Java working with Firefox. Any help would be appreciated. Apparently, this is what I must do so Firefox can use the Java install, but not exactly sure how to do it.. Make a symbolic link to libjavaplugin_oji.so in your Mozilla Plugins directory. Unless you are using an old version of Mozilla, or one you compiled yourself with gcc 2.9x, use the copy located in the plugin/i386/ns7 directory of JRE 5.0, or plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32 if you are using JRE 1.4.2. Thanks again, zenarcher

    WINE and Mandrake 10.0

I have installed WINE found in my Mandrake 10.0 distribution. Mandrake also required a library to be installed at the same time and I installed XWine GUI. That's about as far as I understand how to proceed. I have a Windows program I wish to install for Geocaching, the Geocaching Swiss Army Knife, or known as GSAK. It is supposed to work under Linux, using WINE. I only have Mandrake 10.0 on my hard drive and do not run Windows with this box. Could anyone provide me a simple step-by-step procedure for configuration of WINE and how I go about installing and using the Windows program? Since I'm really new to Linux, the explanation has to be simple. Thanks in advance! zenarcher

    WINE and Mandrake 10.0

Well, that may be my solution to the problem, as I intend to purchase Mandrake 10.1 as soon as it is available...I think that's a couple of weeks from now, so will have the new version of Wine and it will probably create everything automatically. Thanks so much for the help and information. It really inspires me to get the new Mandrake as soon as it's available. I plan on getting the 6 CD version. zenarcher

    WINE and Mandrake 10.0

Just one question, Dan. Do I have to create this fake_windows/Program\Files/ area? I don't see anything like that in my home/zenarcher area. The error I receieved was in Wine....not XWine....and was when I tried to run wine GSAKXXX.exe as SU in the terminal on the downloaded but not extracted program. When I did the wine GSAKXXX.exe....the program came up like it was installing...and at the end of the installation, I got the error I explained..I could not find anywhere that the program had installed. zenarcher

    WINE and Mandrake 10.0

Thanks for all the help, Dan...and for even trying GSAK. Seems from your experience, GSAK isn't going to be a Wine friendly program, so for now, I think I will just leave the program on my wife's system and put it on the Windows drive of my workbench box. That should suffice. I'll probably be running across other geocaching software which will work with Wine. It's not a serious problem and I'm thrilled with my first experiences with Linux. I just have weird hobbies and weird software. It would be great to see some Linux software related to Geocaching, as it's becoming a very big hobby. I also do some hobby ghost hunting, so video and audio software are used extensively. zenarcher

    WINE and Mandrake 10.0

I gave Dan's directions a try, but apparently I'm not doing something right. I downloaded the GSAK program to home/zenarcher and can see it there. I opened a terminal, logged in as su and found the GSAK.exe file. I did the wine GSAKXXX.exe and get the following error. Could not find wine config [Drive X] entry for current working directory /home/zenarcher; starting in Windows directory. Looking in hidden files in home/zenarcher, I find .wine and .xwine. I am also able to open the XWine GUI and see everything there. Guess I need a bit more help. I did not find anything like .wine/fake_windows/Program\Files. When I open XWine, I do see what looks like a Windows tree with a C: drive and others....Hope I'm clear enough on that. zenarcher

    WINE and Mandrake 10.0

Thanks again, Dan. I have also printed out your responses, so I will have them for future tries. I also installed XWine, so I should have the GUI to use, once I have this all figured out and working. I'll sure give all this a try and see how it goes. Again, I sincerely appreciate all your patient assistance.. zenarcher
