Fedora Core 5 just had a kernel update to 2.6.18-1.2200.fc5. Following the update, I rebooted the system and get an eth0 error. During the boot, the system faults at "determining IP information for eth0." Following a long delay and pinging, it displays 100% packet loss...then continues through the boot process. I have no eth0 connection. When I reboot, back to the previous kernel, all works fine. I'm using an the ethernet port on my MSI K8T Neo-V motherboard running to my Linksys router. I've never experienced this kind of issue with other kernel updates on FC5. Anyone else having problems or an idea how to resolve it? Cheers, zenarcher

I found the problem, danleff. Oddly, the ethernet port on the motherboard died....somehow, just when I rebooted the system. Anyway, the motherboard was under warranty....sent it back to MSI and they replaced it. Problem resolved. Cheers, zenarcher

I've been a loyal fan of SUSE for the past year or so, but just built a test box, so I could try some other distros. My FC5 DVD arrived today, so gave it a try. I have to say, I'm really impressed! So far, I like everything about it! No problems of any kind on the install. Now, I do need a bit of help from someone who uses SMART with FC5. I have done all the updates and such, using SMART. I'm missing some packages I always use with SUSE, however, so know there must be some SMART channels for obtaining them. Perhaps someone could help me out. Right now, I'm trying to get Acroreader, RealPlayer, MPlayer, Xine and I'm guessing I need the w32codec package for multimedia, as well. Likewise, I'll need the MPlayer plug-in for Firefox. I also see that I have the old 1.4 version of Java and wonder if there is a channel for getting the latest. I have a few others, but if someone could help me with SMART channels for these, it would be wonderful! Perhaps a source where I can get a list of SMART channel extras for FC5. One more question I have, too. When I boot up, Before I can get into my KDE desktop, I have to enter the username and password every time and I wonder if I missed something during the install process, or if I can not set up for autologon. Cheers, zenarcher

FC5 Installed - Now I Need Help With Extra Package
zenarcher replied to zenarcher's topic in Everything Linux
danleff, I have a question I think you could help me with, regarding SMART channels for FC5. Here are the channels I have active in SMART and I wonder if there are any others you would suggest: core extras updates rpm-db kde-redhat-stable livna-stable rpmforge I'm wondering also, if there is a channel for Gnome, like the kde-redhat-stable channel. I've tried to install FC5 on my main system, which has a pair of SATA drives, but no luck there. It's an MSI motherboard using VT8237. Everything automatically installs with SUSE, but not so with FC5. FC5 says no drives can be found, after it installs the via SATA driver. I'm lost there, but like FC5 so much, I may get rid of my SATA drives and just get one large IDE drive, so I can eliminate the problem. cheers, zenarcher -
FC5 Installed - Now I Need Help With Extra Package
zenarcher replied to zenarcher's topic in Everything Linux
Thanks much, danleff. I managed to find the right package and install procedure for the Java problem and have the plug-in working correctly in Firefox. I've even found the couple of missing packages I wanted to have, because I'm used to them from my SUSE install. I just reset the login as you suggested, so I think that will resolve the last issue I had! Amazing! I must be learning something, as this was not nearly as painful as the first Linux experiences a couple of years ago. I've only been using SUSE, so can configure that in my sleep....but I really wanted to try Fedora. I think it could become my primary Linux system. Thanks much for the help! Cheers, zenarcher -
FC5 Installed - Now I Need Help With Extra Package
zenarcher replied to zenarcher's topic in Everything Linux
I did manage to find and install Acroreader, RealPlayer, MPlayer, Xine and the w32codec packages....as I located livna-stable as a channel. That worked great! I've messed something up with Java, but not sure what. I found some directions for installing Java 1.5....which I followed. But I do not see Java 1.5 in the system....nor is Java working with Firefox. Yet, in my main menu, I have the Java Control Panel for 1.5...and I have Java 1.5 set in OpenOffice. So, I'm not sure what I've done or where I'm at. I still haven't figured out how I can log on with KDE at startup....as I have to enter the username and password, before KDE will start. Cheers, zenarcher -
I just wanted to pass along some information regarding the new XGL desktop, included with SUSE 10.1 I've been playing with SUSE 10.1 for a few weeks now and finally got the courage to try the XGL 3D desktop. I'm using an Nvida FX5200 video card with 128M video RAM, AMD XP3000+ processor and 1GB of PC2700 RAM in my system. I followed the directions, exactly, on this website, for installing and configuring XGL and Compwiz: http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/feature/17174.html Yes, it's primarily eye candy and still in the beta stage of development, but I'm impressed. As is fairly well known, XGL does still have a bit of a problem running with 3D games. So far, everything works fine except Frozen Bubble, which fades out in the background and distorted videos, when attempting to play a video from the CNN News website. All other videos played with KMplayer and other video players seem to work fine. Likewise, radar animations on the National Weather Service website play perfectly. Applications such as GoogleEarth and Stellarium also work normally. All XGL shortcut keys work as they should and opening four different applications on the desktop cube are pretty cool! Cheers, zenarcher

If anyone needs information to add channels for up[censored] SUSE 10.1 through SMART, here is the most complete listing I've been able to locate: http://divine160281.di.funpic.de/smart-channel.txt Cheers, zenarcher

Most anyone trying SUSE 10.1 quickly became aware of update problems. Even YAST must be fixed and the best work-around is to use SMART package manager. You should download and install the SMART packages from GURU, as GURU has already added most of the necessary update channels for you. Unfortunately, a channel for GNOME updates is not included and I had a difficult time finding a source which would work. Finally, today, I found the appropriate channel and updated GNOME. The channel works perfectly. At the same time, I found a very complete list of channels for up[censored] SUSE 10.1 through SMART, including a lot of add-on software. If you are using SUSE 10.1 and SMART, you might want to go through the list and add some extra channels, such as the one shown for GNOME updates. This list will be a real help for SUSE 10.1 users, as it will give you all the packages to make your audio and video players work properly, as well. Here is the link for information regarding add-on channels in SMART: http://divine160281.di.funpic.de/smart-channel.txt Cheers, zenarcher

Help SuSe 10.0 wireless Belkin 54g can't configue very new to linux
zenarcher replied to Robert Alamond's topic in Linux Networking
You're welcome, Danleff. Andrew has recently updated his How-To and continues to refine and improve it. It's quite helpful and now he has even added some pictorial assistance in walking one through the steps. Cheers, zenarcher -
Help SuSe 10.0 wireless Belkin 54g can't configue very new to linux
zenarcher replied to Robert Alamond's topic in Linux Networking
Since it's a Broadcom, same as I use in my notebook, I'd say that ndiswrapper will be required. Here is a very good tutorial for installing and setting up with SUSE 10.1 http://nextgen.no-ip.org/~andrew/linux/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapperinfo10-32bit.php Cheers, zenarcher -
I install both KDE and GNOME, as I use a lot of GNOME applications, but I do always install KDE by default, as it's the desktop that I'm comfortable using. Cheers, zenarcher

Yes, I think often you can get a glitch during the install. I see so many installation problems on the forums and it's just my belief that they are most likely due to downloads or burns or bad blank disks. Saying that, I always get commercial disks and rarely encounter a problem. Glad you got it all working. Smart is quite nice for updates. Check for updates and you will find many, I know.....I've found a load of them...especially for KDE. I'm sorry but I don't have any experience with Windows and Linux on the same box. I've never run any in that configuration. We have one Windows box here....which my wife uses to play a couple of games...and I use to update the GPS....and use it when I'm walking someone through problems with Windows on the phone. That's about it. Everything else we run is straight Linux. I just use a USB switch to switch between different boxes and the printer....and have a KVM switch so my wife can use the Linux box and the Windows box with the same monitor, keyboard and mouse. Perhaps Danleff has more of an idea on the dual boot box and networking. Cheers, zenarcher

Sorry I didn't get back sooner. I've been busy installing SUSE 10.1 in three of my machines here...two desktop and a notebook. As for KDE, they have changed the method of acquiring packages and updates. Likewise, SUSE had a major glitch in YAST when released and it just was broken. Most all is fixed now, but you must do your first update with SMART...and KDE updates have also been moved to SMART. SMART is really quite cool and works great. You MUST NOT install the SMART package with SUSE....you have to use the one from GURU....as he has added all the sources you need, as well. You can download it here for your appropriate backages...get all packages and install: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/rpm-navigation.php?cat=System/smart/ Then, run SMART. Make sure to go into Channels and mark all boxes, so you get all of the updates. This will also fix most of the broken YAST files. Please also read this: http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/254/42/ If you are having problems with YAST, I should be able to help. It is working fine now....but different than previous versions of SUSE...and due to KDE package up[censored], you must use it with SMART for KDE updates. As for adding KDE to your new installation, go into YAST>Software Management and select Packages. Go down the list on the right side and add all KDE packages....Make sure you check the Autocheck Dependencies box, so you get everything you need. Then, you can switch to KDE desktop, which I prefer. Cheers, zenarcher

You do not have to reinstall to use KDE desktop. I use KDE with SUSE, as it is my favorite, however, I also use a lot of GNOME applications. So, I merely install GNOME and KDE, and select KDE as my default desktop. Linux is quite nice, as most all GNOME applications will run under KDE and KDE under GNOME. I would suggest installing KDE, if you have not done so already and switching to KDE as your default desktop. Cheers, zenarcher

Let me try to put this another way. Instead of saying "Konquoror" I'll say you might open "Home." That should be a little icon that looks like a house on your toolbar. Does that help? Then, try what I suggested. Cheers, zenarcher

I just installed SUSE 10.1 a couple of days ago and have been playing with updates and configuration, so thought I'd post my experience with this new release. I have to say that I'm extremely please with 10.1, having used the previous two versions of the distro. The basic hardware here is: AMD XP3000+, 1 GB PC2700 RAM, SATA RAID0 (softraid), nVidia FX5200 AGP video card (128M), MSI KT6V motherboard. The install was familiar, however there are a few more choices to be made during the install. I use KDE desktop but also install GNOME. All hardware was correctly recognized by SUSE, as always. I did have to manually install the nVidia driver, which was easy to do, since it is no longer included with SUSE. My HP Officejet 6210 multi-function printer was properly identified and through YAST I set up the scanner function, which worked the first time with SANE. Since the YAST updater was broken when SUSE 10.1 was released, I downloaded the GURU version of SMART, which includes the necessary update sources. I'm not familiar with SMART, however it was quite easy to perform the updates. Yesterday (9 June), there were several YAST updates through SMART. Once installed, YAST began to work perfectly! Apparently, Novell has resolved the YAST issues. KDE updates are no longer available through YAST, but are included in the GURU SMART package. I updated KDE to the latest, which fixed a minor issue with the screensaver not starting. I'm still waiting to get GNOME updates. The only issue I have with SUSE 10.1 is Evolution email recognizing my Sony CLIE PDA for sync purposes. This always worked fine with previous versions of SUSE. I can see the PDA being recognized in usbview and in hardware, but it just won't connect in Evolution. I have noticed other posts on forums indicating the same problem, so perhaps there will be an update to Evolution or GNOME to resolve it. Likewise, I have noticed many install complaints on forums, using SUSE 10.1. It is my personal belief that most of these problems are due to either bad downloads or bad burns. I purchased SUSE 10.1 directly from Novell, so I have the boxed edition, with the printed manual. In any case, the install was flawless, using the Novell provided DVD. All audio and video players are working, after running the GURU and PACKMAN updates. Microsoft TrueType fonts are no longer included in SUSE, but easily located as an RPM and installed in a few seconds. I'm looking forward to trying some of the new features in SUSE 10.1, but have been just playing with basic configurations and such, while checking out this new version. So far, not really any complaints and the stability is wonderful! Cheers, zenarcher

You might start Konquoror, if you are using KDE...under View...check "Show hidden files," then click on Evolution>Mail>Local...and see if you can see the problem email there. If so, you should be able to delete it there. Regards, zenarcher

I just purchased an HP Officejet 6210 multi-function printer. The unit will print, scan, copy and fax. It is a USB connected device and I'm using SUSE 10.0. I connected the new printer and installed it through YAST. Quite simple, since SUSE 10 recognizes and has the driver for the Officejet 6200 series. Likewise, I made sure the packages, hplip and hplip-hpijs were installed. I also went into /etc/sane/dll.conf and removed the comment in front of hpaio, as I read about doing. The printer is recognized just fine in YAST Hardware and the printing works great. My problem is with scanning. When I try to "Acquire" with SANE, I get a message that no scanner was found. KOOKA does not show a scanner, either. (I'm using KDE desktop). I have SANE and XSANE installed, as well. In YAST Hardware, I went to Scanners and can see the HP Officejet 6210 there, as well. Attempting to configure it there, I get the error: Failed to set SCSI scanner access permissions. The error message is: (nothing following Is:...it is just blank) Could someone assist me in how I can get the scanner in my printer to scan with SANE? I've Googled several articles, but haven't managed to find anything that really worked or helped. Thanks, zenarcher

Unable To Scan With HP Officejet 6200 And SUSE 10.0
zenarcher replied to zenarcher's topic in Everything Linux
Well, that's great, Danleff. It sounds like this Officejet 6210 is a real Linux friendly printer. I hope people take a look at these experiences, when they think about getting a new multifunction printer. It saves a lot of hassle! Cheers, zenarcher -
Unable To Scan With HP Officejet 6200 And SUSE 10.0
zenarcher replied to zenarcher's topic in Everything Linux
Good deal, Danleff. I'll be waiting to see how you do with the printer and Fedora. SUSE 10.0 has the Officejet 6200 series included in the printer setup, which is one of the primary reasons I chose it. So, it was just merely a matter of adding the printer through YAST>Hardware>Printers.....but of course, not knowing to uncomment those two lines, complicated the matter. That was all I found necessary to do. The unit works wonderfully. Great print quality....same with copy and scan....and I was really amazed that the fax worked, as VoIP phone isn't exactly up to speed for faxing. My provider says it "should" work, but they do not support nor guarantee faxing. They say that if a fax fails, one should just try to resend it. I've been with the same VoIP provider for two years now and couldn't be happier with that. Inexpensive and all the features the telephone company had and more...and actually, the audio quality is superior to what we had with the local phone company. An occasional breakup of audio was resolved when I went to a 5 GHz cordless phone, so eliminated interference with my 2.4 GHz wireless router. Regards, zenarcher -
Unable To Scan With HP Officejet 6200 And SUSE 10.0
zenarcher replied to zenarcher's topic in Everything Linux
Danleff, You make everything so simple!! I uncommented /dev/usb/scanner0 and lo and behold.....the scanner works great in GIMP, just as I wanted!! I had already gone into /etc/sane.d/dll.conf and removed the comment on hpaio, which I believe also needs to be done. Anyway, this works like a dream! None of the problems I had with the old HP T-45...everything just works with the HP6210. I hope yours will be as easy! Now, I can wait for my new SUSE 10.1 DVD to arrive, which I have ordered from Novell...but is currently backordered....and go through the exercise again. But, I always make notes and write this stuff down. Cheers, zenarcher -
Okay, I'm experimenting around a bit. Maybe over my head! I've read the forum on the DSL website and I'm as lost as before I read it! Knowing the patience of members on this forum, I thought maybe I'd see if anyone here has had some experience with DSL and USB pen drives. Again, this is far from critical, I'm just playing around right now. Anyway, I have a Lexar 128M USB Jump Drive, which is readily identified when I plug it into my Linux box with SUSE 9.3. No problem there. I also have a copy of DSL 1.4 on a CD, which I purchased, since I usually mess up doing downloads. I have one Windows XP box on my network, as well, so can work from that or the Linux box...no problem with that. The Windows box is real old and slow. It's my understanding that I should be able to install DSL 1.4 on the Lexar USB drive, but I'm not sure how. What I'd like to do is have DSL on the USB drive, so if I am somewhere there is a Windows box, I could plug the USB drive in and bring up DSL Linux to use. With all my own settings, bookmarks in the browser and so forth. Now, I've read about booting up, as well and going into the Windows box BIOS and setting it to boot from the USB drive. I'm trying to avoid that, as I don't want to mess with the BIOS in someone's computer, other than mine. Also, many of the older boxes may or may not have the boot to USB device in the BIOS. As a "for instance," if I go to my daughter's house, with her Windows box and I want to do something, I'd like to merely be able to plug my USB pen drive into a USB port and boot into Linux, with all my own settings, email addresses, bookmarks and the like...without disturbing the settings in her machine. Reading further, it appears to me that one can use DSL with QEMU to boot directly from within Windows. Like much else in Linux, I don't know a darned thing about QEMU, now to install or configure it, or even if it will fit with DSL on a 128 USB pen drive. I've looked at the QEMU website and see there is QEMU and QEMU Accelerator, whatever that is...available for download. So, I thought someone here might have some suggestions, ideas or other possible considerations on how I might set up a Linux system on a 128M USB jump drive, which could be started from within Windows and not mess with the configuration in a host's computer. If someone is familiar with doing this, I'm probably going to require some direct walk-through to figure it out. If you want to suggest that I find something else to do with my USB pen drive, I understand that, as well! Again, I'm in no hurry and am just experimenting, so any thoughts would be appreciated. Regards, zenarcher
