im using this forum to figure out what new poll does! Whats Your favorite linux Distro? (i know there are going to be people who think they are smart and say they are all good. but read what i ask befor u say that)

Is there such think as direct x on linux? or something equivelant to that??If there is i would like to hear all about it! (if possible in rpm format, a thats the only thing i know how to install...)

I would just like to thank you guys for sticking with me. it is really great that you guys are here for me to answere my questions. and i do realize now (daperdan) that i was geting a little crazy. and i bet its not good for your HD to install so many distros. realizing this i grabed my old mandrake and installed that on my laptop. guess what???? it found my wireless card and my video card fine. if i would have just stuck to one distro then i could have gotten that on my laptop alot sooner.... thank you guys again for helping me. my postest will be less frequint now.

One more thing... This whole topic was about thanking you guys... haha.

Not exactly... Maybe if you guys would not think of it how MTV would show you. I'm not looking for attention. I had a hardware update. I told you. I thought some of these people where my friends and tell me that it was wrong, and to take it back or something. Instead you make fun and abondon. Because you think I'm some kid looking for attention?? How much do you know about any of our lives??? Even though now I do look like a kid wanting attention (which I hate those kids). Well, i guess i will post a little more it seems that i post alot less now. maybe to much less. well anyways, because i have no job or school and am lways bored i went ahead and did a bad thing.... i got ssssooooo tired of linux not being able to support the video area of my stuff. (radeon igp 345M (laptop) and radeon 9600SE (bigbox)) very expenive video cards mind you. that i went out and stole a geforce fx 5500 agp 8x. now this was no candy bar.. i kinda feel bad. 120 bucks. BUT when i think of how i wasted 120 on the radeon plus buying a laptop with radeon and it doent work i smile. no driver for the 5500. but i can use the 5600 and it does just fine. hehe im happy now with linux. its COMPLETE on my bigbox. internet works great, video works awesome, speed is good. laptop lacks though. but i use bigbox more now anyways. P.S. danleff and dapper dan. if u think is inapropriate for me to say i stole it, then please delete anything you want!

Hello, i was just wandering if there is such thing as a download manager for linux? like freshdownload. where you can reconnect, resume, pause, etc. etc. a download. if anyone knows where i could find one it would be great!! I've wanted to totally move to linux. the only1 was i can do that is with a couple more things. they are a download manager, driver for my video card (Radeon IGP 345M), some driver or whatever i need to get my wireless working, and some games. (FUN games like Diablo warcraft morrowwind fable). in that order too. now if i have all that set then i can really get down to work. like programming! or playing games... anyways any help would be much appreciated. thankksssssssssssssss

Hello, im a linux newbie and i was just wandering why linux doesnt have a defrag util. does it even need to be defraged?? The reason I bring this up is because i have been trying to install all sort of things (mainly learning howto) and my MANDRAKE 10.1 runs slow. now maybe its just mandrake, but i still want to know about defrag'in it. any help would be appriciated!!!

Now let me pull out some of my linux distro CDs... alright. I have freeBSD, mandrake 10.0, mandrake 10.1, Damn small linux (DSL), mandrake move, peanut linux, and ... gentoo. Now, I have succesfully installed only 2 linux ditros in my whole life. thats mandrake 10.0 and redhat 7.2. Now I know im not the fastest learner ever but I spent ALL of yesterday and last night till 2:00 AM trying to get gentoo installed. (maybe if u could pick up from where you thought you messed up then it would be easyer) and it took me damn near 3 months to get redhat installed. Ok ok so the install is hard, big deal? but nooooooo once I get Redhat all my hopes of linux are ruined. the so called "better then windows by being stabler (HAHA) and faster (another HAHA)" alright. So I spent 3 months to do that, (or one long day and night) thats ok Now I get to do the fun stuff, LEARN THE SYNTAX! yeah! I start to learn the syntax and on my way I discover that there is such thing as "BlackBox WindowManager" SWEET! clear windows how cool! so I download the file and use all my now known linux commands to try to install it. Guess what? I find out that redhat is fussy with blackbox. so I read and read and read findout how to get myself started then untar it and find out there is a depedancy.ok lets go get that. opps another depedancy, so i go get that and guess what? ANOTHER DEPENDANCY! haha, so now that my dreams of geting all these files that need this user and this access and this dependancy and this distro are ruined. I tryed other files, of course! I never give up. to this day of me working on linux for about.. total of 5-6 months i have installed 2 outs of 8 distros and 1 out of .. ALOT of files. Cool im new I get it so i fire up this bzflag game and its slow as (something). OK FINE let me just jog down to my locale linux store. OOHHHH i live in helena montana! I forgot there isnt one! alright let me go to the library. guess what? linux books from redhat ver .00000000000000000002.4.2..3.6.78.8.9.2.2! Now to conclude my adventure with linux, its hard to learn, hard to install, not that mcuh faster then windows, imposible to get new software on it, and the games out there are null... BUT fear not because today is another adventure! (I never give up) P.S. gentoos instuction to install gentoo are AWESOME. Its the only guide/tutorial out there I've seen not totaly made for linux guru's.

How do you install a RPM package with a debiAN based system? (ubuntu) How does apt-get work and what is it? please tell me soon, if you can. my new ubuntu is fast and the newest. so maybe it will help on my video card and wireless network problem! new kernel and all. allso i see that gnome 2.8 is incredably fast. its right up there with SUSE for me

or you could try just kde thats how i normlly start it when i cant get in.

woops i forgot one thing. what about an iso prog like nero? need t do something with thoe iso's i get on linux.

hmm well i guess different distros work better with diff comps. not suprising but mandrake was incredibly slow on both my laptop (whih was only th setup) and my desktop! i am having quite a bit of trouble geting it to work though.

Hello, I like this forum. Anyways, I was wondering, when you install a RPM how do you know what command to start the application?????? Is there a command or a file with what to type in the shell? Another question I have is what does the "post new poll" do? I do not want to make one and just end up taking over someones last thread who needs help.

wow im not smart, i porbably wanted to word that different. i mean the diredtx diognostics tool. where it tells you all the hardware on your system and drivers. (sorry, thanks though)

oh well then, suse might not work... I think its the best. SUSE is definitly fast and stable. the most ive seen, acually im happy you brought tat up. in andrake some of my apps would start to hand. with suse. for the day ive been using it. it has had not hangs fails anyhting. as for web server and mail server. im not sure but i would suppose its better then others that are slow? like i said im new and i dont have much use for a server of any type. but its definatly good for client use.

from what I've learned. (im still very new) it would be smart to reinstall mandrake, make sure to format. also check out the mandrake site to see what supported. check it with your system. forget mandrake. i know everyone out there says they are all good. from my experience mandrake is good but slow. i would try SUSE. its the BEST by far. it looks good, works with allot of hardware, it looks beautiful, easy for noobies to learn on, its gorgeous, has alot of options for newbies, looks awesome, and is only 1 cd!!! did i mention that it is the best looking distro ive seen? ive downloaded mandrake 10.0,mandrake 10.1, SUSE 9.1, damn small linux, peanut linux, fedora core 3 TEST, debian 30r2, gentoo, freeBSD, and knopix. thats ALOT i think not many people have that much. the best looking is SUSE the fastest working is SUSE the easyest but expanidble is SUSE. i have it on my 1.8 ghz 512 mb 128 mb radeon 9600se 40gig blahblah, and on my 2.8 ghz 190 ram 64 mb radeon IGP (poopie) and it works faster better blahblahblah BlAh BLAH!! can u believe it!! SUSE kicks. i think gentoo is weak (just cause im mad at it. (read last thread))

Well i got SUSE. it is the BOMB! i love it. it is perfect for beginners AND is awesomely Fast! finally what I've been looking for. not only did it work on my desktop comp. it works (after tweaking) great on my laptop too. actually thats what im using to talk to you guys right now! its beautiful too!! man its the bomb. so much so that i even tried installing it on my laptop... i sacrificed norton on my windows side of dual boot laptop. along with ALL the other software that can default with the laptop! So all in all im pretty happy with suse. GREAT distro for beginners. FAR better then mandrake in speedwise. just as easy to install and only 1 DISK!! haha. finally im so happy!!! But alas there is one problem i have yet to conquer. my wireless network card doesnt work on my laptop. i have a bcm94306 802.1g broadcom built into it. ive search for alot of answeres but.... having little luck. but i guess i can just have this cord on my laptop! im just ssoo happy. its really beautiful...

OK, i have a compaq evo. (my school is where i got it so im pretty sure the hardware is common) with a 1.8ghz intel pentium 4 processor. video card is a radeon 9600SE 128MB 8xAGP, 512MB ram. 1 tick is HP ddr, 333, cl2.5 the other is a compaq ddr 266 cl 2.5. (??) floppy drive, campaq powerbox, iomega zip cd 650. (??) 40 GB IDE hardrive. i have had windows xp home on it but i recently got a virus and i couldnt get on the net. so i just deleted it. so the whole drive is for whatever linux works best for me... sorry it was so indepth. i had to open computer to figure it out and i think its best for me to write down all i can incase i even need to use it. i also have a problem with geting ANY linux to work on my laptop (which is how i write to you guys) and im pretty touchy with it and i dont want to mess anything up on it. it is a compaq nx9010 intel penitum 4 2.8 ghz, 190 MB of ddr ram. (266?) radeon igp 345m chip type rs200m AGP. DAC type is internal DAC(400mhz)64.0 MB. Thank you direct x. So some help with that might be nice too. currently it has xp pro on it and takes whole drive.

bad news, i cant get any type of desktop going. i type emerge x, emerge kde, emerge gnome, and emerge other desktops crap. none of it wor, i will check and see if i even have x11. if i dont then emerge x doesnt work, i tryed

SWEET!!! i just hit control d. i thought that it acually ment to type control d. anyways and it started up!!!! but now i need to get into a gui! some help? kde and startx does nothing. maybe emerge kde??

I know freeBSD isnt linux, thats part of the reason i got it. to check it out. i thought i would throw that in the list though. its not that i want something easy is just that i dont want something imposible... i just tryed to install gentoo again. and i got futher on the boot-up this time. but it says... checking all filesystems... the superblock could not read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. if the device is valid and it really contains a ext2 filesystem (and not swap or something), then the superblock is currupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 <devices> *fsck could not correct all errors, manual repair needed give root password for maintenence (or type Control-D for normal startup): Well im mad. i hope someone helps me fast. i might try to install debian again... i REALLY dont feel like downloading ANOTHER distro. but i guess ill start one now of mepis or ubuntu!!! thank you for your input!

Thank you that was a nice reply. take a look at how long ago it was from this post to my last... im still installing gentoo... its midnight and im keeping my girlfriend up for this........ i guess i can assume im a (dumb) computer nerd.Thanks for all the inut guys, keep it up! Oh and as for SUSE dont you have to pay for that?? well this is my last post for tonight. I guess ill check out linuxiso and start a long download of yet ANOTHER linux distro.
