SATA Hard Disk going PIO Mode

but it fixed the problem when he placed it further down. so i still go for the theory that he bended the sata kable right at the end so it got a really shart bend "<" like that. because i know standard kables dont handle that. but i dont understand wicked101's situation.. that just seems to ulogical. it might be the drive got to hot. and then read wrong. Best Regards E.S

SATA Hard Disk going PIO Mode

thats just seems wierd. how can it be a controller error when he has lots of other S-ata disks? maybe he got that Hard-Drive on a seperate add-on S-ata extension card. PCI or some sort. maybe its that seperate controllers fault. he had alot of sata disks too. might just be that.

    hehe..

still. you gotta see the irony here? i know i run webserver myself. on nix. i dont want to spend much money on windows server, because i dont make any money on the website. no ads or nothing. but i could have used windows server if i had the cash.

    XP Pro and games

You didnt mention anything about Direct x.. you gotta have at least 9 and above to play HL-2. dont know about joint ops though. guess its DX9 there to, only B not C. and what resolution is your monitor running now, if you cant set it to 1024x786? what is your monitors native resolution? do any other games run? have you downloaded all the updates for windows? (possibly not required, but recommended) Best Regards E.S

    hehe..

writing to NTFS is FUBAR, but writing to FAT 32 wasnt stable.. hehe. so i lost one partition. it got corrupted. strange enough. didnt lose any important data though. was just a streaming partition.
  8. if your HD crash you can always send it to some HD recovery firm (if you got the cash and the data was really important). but not even that have a guaranty to restore all data. run backups!
  9. none partition is faster than any other , if they use the same partition table, like NTFS. its a primary partition so that partition is part of a boot sector so your able to boot from the disk (if im not mistaken, im not the biggest HD arcitect guru around). bad sectors isnt really a danger to a HD. if you get bad boot sectors on a HD you only have to fix mbr. but the real problem is crashes.. if your HD crashes, it doesnt matter if you got 1 primary partition in total, or 1 primary and 7 extended ones. a hd crash takes everything on the drive with it. the only safe backup is to run regurlary backup. if you chose to run backup RAID or something its your choice. i burn all my critcal data to DVD's each week. and i got a backup server running in a corner. the corporate lie is that HDs have an eternal lifespan. but thats not true. since there are moveable parts in a HD, heat degrees the lifespan. which isnt the case with CPU, RAM and such. since no parts are physically moving on that scale. ofcourse cpu and ram can be ruined also (which happens alot on world scale), but HD's are really really the pc component that suffers of the risk of beeing ruined. if im not mistaken its these pc components that goes FUBAR. in quantity order : PSU Motherboard HD's . . so no matter what youll do your not safe from HD crashes.. backup is the only reliable thing to do.

as long as you dont like "break". sata cables are kinda stiff. i bought some i could bend like "<" that. because i have some vertical HD bays with watercooling. if it works i guess there is no problems at all

    hehe..

i just run server apps on the nix box. games and other fun stuff on windows. as simple as that. linux is good because you can run it on a really crappy PC, even though my server isnt a crappy pc. running a http server and a webmail server, plus ftp sites require a fair good amount of CPU cycle power and memory. im having some problems with it still though. the write function to Fat32 partitions , is still crippled. but hey as long as windows supports everything cool there is no point changing.. more and more linux distros cost money now too.

    ? duel monitor?

i know how to do it, but i have to take a loot again, to be sure. you should be able to do it in " NVIDIA nView Desktop Manager " which you can find in control panel. The most obvious solution is to set the wallpaper for Black/blue/green (or whatver you prefer) only. which should then look just fine.

    cpu configuration

you didnt purchase a AMD XP 1800+ ? because in AMD the number on the CPU isnt its clock frequenzy. i dont remember about the 1800 or any of the normal XP series before BARTON , but my guess is that the 1800 runs around 1.3 and 1.4 GHZ. so if thats the case, your pc is just fine. and i sure wouldnt want to clock a 1800+ CPU to 1.8GHZ unless you got some hefty cooling. not some crappy bulk heatsinks with fan.. hehe not without a firebrigade anyways. yeah. i understand him myself. i use slackware on my nix box. kinda new to it though, but it seems fair enough. but on my main computer i gotta use windows, otherwise it becomes to fiddly to run entertainment software. when im home i prefer to relax. running a server and other boring stuff i do on my nix box. gotta be that way. at least for me. until everything works without a fiddle on linux ill keep to windows as Pri, OS.

SATA Hard Disk going PIO Mode

there is a common thing with sata disk cables... DONT BEND THE CABLE! if you have to bend the end of the SATA cable you have to buy special cables for it. otherwise it wont read successfully and use several tried to some binary strings. which could result in a CRC error when reading and then have to read again. not many people know this and thinks there is a problem with their drive which they have put in a bay so far up and in in their full tower that they have to bend their cable like this [ which isnt really good for a standard S-ata cable. im not sure if thats your problem, but now you know anyways
  21. this problem might be heat related. right after it restarts put your finger on the bottom of your CPU heatsink. if its really hot and you actually feel its very hot then there is your problem. And also motherboards have a history in malfunctioning. specially the motherboard chip the motherboard North-bridge.. if your motherboard dont have passive cooling (they rarely have anymore, youll have fans on the mobo chip. check if it still works when your computers on. ive had two motherboards myself where the north-bridge fan have stopped working. you better pray its not your PSU (power supply unit), because it is a risk that if that goes, eveything directly connected to it can be ruined. this is specially the case for your , slot ins card like graphic, sound, ethernet and so on. it might also be a software problem though, but i would check the heating first. Best Regards E.S
  22. im taking this six month brake from the army and i was considering to upgrade... until i got the message i might get sent to sudan in 10 months. then i thought i might as well wait (and while im at it, can i get PCF in sudan? otherwise i would have to get a friend to send me one each month). that and other reasons convinced me to wait to upgrade. i want to buy a SLI pc, but it seems it got some serious compatible problems, so ill wait with that. and it wont be long before a new gen of vid cards get here either. so right now im on a barton 2500+, 1.5GB pc2700 ram and a 5700 Nvidia card. if i want to wait for the complete upgrade what graphics card would you suggest me to buy? right now i got a shitload of money so that wont be a problem. i just need another hobby than working out , since im stuck at home for six months Smile PS: dont have PCI-E as i got this socket - A board (as you already knew if you could see the barton word some paragraphs above) Best of regards E.S ____

    Bypassing windows encryption

my motherboard just got fked , the NB fan stopped working and melted the entire NB chip core. so i had to buy a new motherboard, but now i can access a file i really need to get to. its a notepad textfile with a password i really need, but i cant access the file because of the damn windows encryption. now normally i would have a backup file so i could access it, but somehow i my backup drive had a loss of data. i dont know why really. so is the only way to get access to my textfile to use a already lost recovery agent? so that means im fucked then.. Best regards E.S
