The only thing that won't allow them to work is if you underestimated the length of the cables.

I recently purchased an AIW X1800XL (great card, by the way) and I am using it in my HTPC (ensure you have a large case for this card - it goes all the way to the opposite edge of the motherboard). I replaced the stock cooler with a Zalman VF700-Cu LED VGA cooler and Zalman RAMsinks. I really didn't check before but I think the card was running at almost 81 degrees Centigrade before I changed out the cooler and now it runs around 74 degrees (this is all at idle). This is from the Overdrive panel in my Catalyst Control Center. I am using Artic Silver 5 TIM. On another note I am running the Zalman 9500 Cooler on my X2 3800+ CPU and it sits at about 50C at idle. This is in an HTPC case and I have setup the airflow so the rear exhaust fans are drawing from the 9500 to aid the flow (and as per Zalman's instructions) but these temperatures seem high to me. I feel pretty proficient at TIM application but I feel there is something wrong. I really haven't even loaded the system so I can't testify to the loaded temps but these idle temps seem rather high. Please advise if anyone knows any tips or tricks or if I am just being paranoid. Thanks.

Thanks Sampson. Helpful as always. That makes me feel a little better. I know the Zalman coolers I have been using on my other cards seem to reduce case and GPU temps but this just seemed high to me. I think I remember seeing reviews like that too, especially referring to the high clock speeds and such of the core and memory on the new X1800 series cards. I think I am going to go watercooling with it but I am not sure yet as I have an HTPC and about the only video water cooling I could do would be the Thermaltake Tidewater (unless I wanted to go external which I don't). Plus that setup is TALL to say the least and although my Silverstone LC18 has plenty of space...it might just be a little too short. Thanks again.

What about the 1-series Opterons (Venice and Denmark cores)? They are 939-pin processors, although being phased out, they are still pin compatible. There are 939 and 940 server boards out there. I would like to think that the 939 Opterons do not require ECC memory but I don't know. That's why I posted my post about using a 939 Opteron with an MSI Neo4 Platinum board.

Just a question... I have an MSI Neo4 Platinum board. I want to build a file server with a massive amount of drive space. I want to use an Opteron 165 with this mobo along with WinXP x64. My question is will this work? The Opteron 165 is a 939 pin proc and I am pretty sure it will work with this board. Also, if I use this particular mobo/proc combination, do I need to use ECC or registered RAM or can I use "regular" RAM? Thanks for the help.

Instant fix...install Plextor SATA drive and everything will be back to normal. I need to do more troubleshooting as I know the IDE Plextor DVD burner worked previously in my last computer. I think it is purely too many IDE components and not enough IDE ports.

I don't know much about your particular board but if you head to this site: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us Then choose motherboard under product Then choose Socket939 under series Then choose A8V Deluxe When the page finally loads (Asus servers in US are SLOW), click on drivers tab at top. Now depending on whether you have physically installed your hard drive on the VIA SATA ports or the Promise SATA ports (check your manual or the Asus site for which is which) determines which files you will need to download. If it is VIA then you need to download this: VIA VT6420 (VT8237) SATA RAID Driver Package Version 2.20D WHQL Once downloaded and extracted it will either be all the files you need or it will have a Make Disk executable that will make a floppy for you. If Promise then you need to download one of the two of these: Promise SATA378 Driver V1.00.0.26 for Windows 98SE/NT4.0/ME/2000/XP/2003 -or- Promise FastTrak 378 RAID Driver V1.00.1.37 for Windows 98SE/NT4/ME/2000/XP/2003 I think the regular SATA378 driver has a Make Disk function too but it is not listed. Better safe than sorry and download all of them and make three different driver disks depending on which you want to use. I personally recommend the Promise ports unless you are doing a RAID set up. Hope this helps.

I downloaded Plextor's new PlexTools XL or whatever it is so I could see if there was a lack of info that the computer itself was seeing but both drives look the same (except for their noted differences i.e. CD burner vs DVD burner). I also used the software to manipulate some settings but nothing changed. I have a Plextor PX-716SA (SATA dvd burner) that I am going to try to see if I can fix it but otherwise I am at a loss.

Just a quick request for a step method for troubleshooting. I am building a new system with the following components: AMD A64 3500+ (with Zalman 7000B LED fan) OCZ Gold PC3200 1GB RAM MSI RS482M4-ILD ATI Xpress200 MB Antec Phantom 350 PSU ATI AIW X800XL (2) Maxtor 300GB DiamondMax 10 (in mirrored RAID) Plextor 712A DVD-RW Anyway, as soon as I press the power button the LED on the PSU comes on, the CPU fan comes on then all of it kicks off (it isn't even on for a second). I have checked all the connections (the PSU is modular but worked just fine in the system I just took it out of). I was using this same processor and video card and memory in the previous system so I know it is probably not a loading issue. Should I strip the system down to bare necessities and start there? What steps should I take to start an efficient troubleshooting session? Thanks for the help (in advance).

Ended up being a bad cable for modular PSU. Shorting out. I hate when that happens.

And that link doesn't help me much, as one of the discs I want to read is the PlexTools disc (but can't due to the DVD drive never seeing the disc). That link is only to the upgrade files that need an existing install to work. I didn't want to email Plextor and have to wait on a fix but I may have to.

Yeah...I would imagine it would have errored out if that wasn't a good way to update. The I/O error moves to the drive that isn't selected as the "recording" drive, even just to read a disc. I am starting to think it is software related and not hardware related at all as it moves with software changes.

Both IDE channels are functioning. One is listed as DMA4 (the DVD-RW drive) and the other is listed as DMA2 (the CD-RW drive). I know that during BIOS post it lists the DVD drive as Ultra66 and the CD drive as Ultra33. Both are using 80 conductor cables and are on individual IDE channels, both configured as master. Everything worked as far as I know. They are all previously used (and worked until they were taken out of service) or brand new. The Plextor Premium has been in a prior system and worked fine (and I think it is working fine now). It seems to be the Plextor PX-716A that is giving me the problems which is new. I udpated to the latest firmware from the (1.09 from 1.03) with one update. Would not doing them one at a time (i.e. 1.03 to 1.04 then 1.04 to 1.05 and so on) have affected anything?

Then, scan for new hardware, everything should come back to normal. Because of the ASPI complication, you could also consider doing this in case just in case the first hack doesn't work. Click on the windows 'Start' button. Click 'Run'. Type 'Regedit' and then click the 'Ok' button. Within the 'Regedit' program, navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Aspi32\Parameters Using the context menu (right mouse button menu), create a new 'String' value called 'ExcludeMiniports' If it already existed, ensure its 'Data' value' is empty. Reboot your machine. Remember that you should backup your registry before editing it or export these values to be reimported in case this doesn't help. First registry edit done with no change. Second edit was already in that condition. Any other ideas? One bit of info is that I have five hard drive partitions and these two optical drives. I read somewhere that something needs to be modified for Windows to see more than 4 IDE devices. Four of the partitions are on the two RAID volumes (three on one drive and one on the other) and they are all SATA on the Sil RAID controller on my mobo. Just thought this might turn someone's wheels.

If it just started, have you recently put in a new piece of hardware or have you just installed some new software? Have you gone into your device Manager to see if there is a "!" in front of your optical devices? Fresh install of Win XP MCE 2005. So all the hardware is "newly" installed. There are no hardware conflicts in device manager. I went through each hardware item and made sure.

If I select it on one, the other de-selects. Is this a function of MCE or do I have another issue? (Don't know what to do to fix this one so I have done nothing) Is this on XP? If so then you can only select one drive for use with the built in burning so this is normal. ASPI is not in XP by default and only certain third party programs require it. I/O errors can be due to poor media. Are these original discs or ones you have burned? It is on Windows Media Center 2005. It is a fresh install. I knew about ASPI being absent but I figured it might be contributing the problem so I installed them (specifically the 4.60 version since most online postings state these offer more compatability). The two discs I am most concerned about are the original discs that came with my DVD burner and my AIW vid card so they are commercial dics. One odd thing is I can burn to blank CD-R and DVD discs. I just can't read from one or the other depending on which I have selected "Recording" on.

Pretty sure this is exactly what Media Extenders are for (Linksys and D-link make wireless ones as well as other network companies). Looking at another forum (www.thegreenbutton.com) would probably lend you more specific answers. I am also pretty sure that any streaming video would have to be converted to WMV to work with the MCE Media Extenders.

This thread may help.... http://www.ntcompatible.com/I_need_helpi...elp_t29291.html

OK. I think I may also disconnect and reconnect all the modular plugs being that they ARE modular, though I would think this would only prevent a component from working and not the system.
-
Couldn't this also be a result of the built-in USB power save issue with WinXP that is fixed with a registry edit? I don't remember where I found it buy my Gigabyte Athlon board was cycling power to my d-link USB wireless adapter and I went in and changed the registry setting. It would still do it but would be hours instead of every couple of minutes. Turned out to be something specific to that MB but the issue is still the same. Sorry, I can't remember the specific URL but it is there...on microsoft.com somewhere...

Maybe a stupid question but are you saying I should just do a physical check or actually get my multi-meter out and do resistance checks?

Hey guys, Recently built a new system using specifically an X2 4800+ on an Asus A8N-SLI Premium. Also has (2) Asus 7800GTX TOP vid cards. There is a 4-pin molex directly next to the first SLI slot that based on what I read is to be used if you have only a 20-pin connector from the PSU (I have the full 24-pin connector). I start the rig up and it posts then shuts down after about 30 seconds. Restart it and it stays on for a little less time and shuts down again. Restart again and after about 20 seconds or so it shuts off. I have one optical drive, 3 SATA hard drives (two raptors and another 250GB Western Digital). I am using the new Zalman 9500 CPU cooler. The video cards have Zalman 700LED coolers on them with ramsinks. I have the new Thermaltake Power Station 520W PSU. Please give me some troubleshooting steps. Thanks for your help.

I do have a strange problem now though. When I try to flash the bios using a boot floppy it says Disk I/O error, replace disk and hit return. But when I skip the bios update and go to load windows and then do the F6 load of the RAID drivers there isn't a problem. Any ideas?
-
Safe to assume it is not an overheating problem now that it stays on indefinitely with a new PSU? I was using the new Thermaltake Power Station because I have a ridiculous (well some think so) amount of components. Now stripped down (DVD writer, video card, all three hard drives) and using an Antec NeoPower, it has been running for the last 15 minutes. Pretty much narrows it down to the PSU right?
-
Alright. Down to one video card, one stick of RAM, floppy drive and DVD writer and a single hard drive. I have been able to get into the bios a couple of times and change some stuff but it powers down before I can save. I would love to update BIOS to latest one but it won't stay on long enough to do that (and I dont want it to die mid-update). The DVD writer is SATA but it shuts down if that is plugged in or not. I have pretty much narrowed it down to either the PSU or the motherboard or one of these remaining few components but everything is brand new. I know some stuff could be DOA but it starts....but then dies. Should I just pull everything, reinstall physically the bare minimum, and then try to start it again? I have checked all the connections and everything is tight. I have even changed out my SATA cables. Please advise. This is like my 15th sysyem and I have never had this much trouble.
