OK. The EZ Plug was not plugged in. Now it is. Stays up longer (45 seconds or so vice 30) but it still turns itself off. Should I just strip it to the basics and start adding things? Should I first trying removing all but one stick of RAM?

Sorry I didn't specify. It dies while it is booting up. I have yet to even get to a place where it is on long enough to even think about installing an OS. It is during the boot stage that it dies.

Hi guys, On my father's computer he somehow had directed hyperlinks in emails using Outlook XP to be opened with Spybot. Originally it was asking what program to use to open the hyperlink and he selected something he trusted. I uninstalled spybot and removed the exe file for setup then tried to open a hyperlink. It asked me what to use so I directed it to Internet Explorer. It now opens them the way it should but it also opens another IE window with no information. It is like an about:blank page but it contains no information. There is nothing in the address line and File->Properties brings up nothing. He uses Lavasoft Ad-aware and Spybot to check for spyware and uses Trend Micro Internet Security for virus/firewall. Let me know a solution or if you need any additional information.

Ok...i installed ndiswrapper 1.0rc2 (yes it is a beta)....and i was following the directions as posted here the other day from another forum.... Know that the instructions were for mandrake and I use SuSE 9.1.. When I get to the point where I try to install my win drivers using > ndiswrapper -i /mnt/media/dvdrecorder/driver/windows xp/wg311v2.inf it tells me command not found.... I'm still not 100% comfortable with using the shell and path names in Linux so bear with me but what am I doing wrong? Through several searches and reading a bit it seems the ndiswrapper method is better for version 2 than the madwifi method...

Just a quick question. To save space and money I am considering using a KVM switch for a Win Box and a Linux Box.... Are there any hardware considerations for KVMs as far as compatability with Linux distros?
-
Very interesting Bill... So is that effectively like have Linux installed as a virtual system on my Windows machine except that it is mainly using the resources of the real Linux box? It pretty much will allow me to use the hardware and resources of my Linux box on my Win machine kind of like VMware or Virtual Machine but instead of it being an OS within an OS it will just be a portal to the actual machine. Plus I will really only need the network connection but not a keyboard, mouse or monitor for the Linux box. Will this work with mulit-boot distros as well?
-
Hehe... I haven't had a pre-built box since 1995 (when I bought a $3000 P75 at CompUSA and went out two days later and bought $1100 worth of upgrades)...everything since then has been blood, sweat and tears.... Anyway...I am going to research some USB KVMs and use one then update this post...we will see...
-
I realize most KVMs are PS/2 but I thought in recent months USB ones had come out... I would hate to have to switch back to all PS/2 peripherals...
-
Yeah but isn't VMWare a little expensive and isn't it also USB keyobard and mouse unfriendly? I am making no assertions, I just remember reading these things somewhere (CPU Magazine maybe?)

Dapper please let me know (As detailed as possible but nothing to in depth to minimize your typing) how this goes... I still eventually (when all systems up and running) will have a purely dedicted Windows XP MCE 2005 box but want to run WinXP Pro with my Linux distros in another box....and since I presently have 4 versions of Linux and want to add a fifth to my collection, any insight would be greatly appreciated...

Installing Netgear WG311v2 with Ndiswrapper
mjwebb007 replied to mjwebb007's topic in Linux Hardware
Hey I appreciate it guys... the Dans to the rescue again.... I will try this as soon as I can and that is a good tip.... -
I will...once I get a Linux distro installed and network card setup....is ndiswrapper a good way to try to get my Netgear WG311 working? All the posts and info I see says to use ndiswrapper with the windows drivers...should I use the new 2.0 drivers or the ones that came with the card? Back to Sanitarium...it's not just that game but the older games I want to play are just that....older...so hopefully WINE will work....since they are less complicated.... I still have to maintain some MS loyalty since I just applied for a job there....but I also applied for one at Redhat....we'll see....

Hey Dapper... I thought I had posted a topic without knowing it when I saw your header....(experiencing a little frustration wiht my Linux move).... Part of my problems resides in the fact that I have very little understanding of what a kernel even is...anyway... I would love to know how you do it Dan...looking at my PC9 manual it seems to say that WinXP has to be the "C:" drive and Win98 can be any (which doesn't make sense to me since XP should be the more configurable of the two). Either way you could do what I have done and install three hard drives and use one for Win98 and partition friendly Linux distros..one for WinXP and WinXP 64-bit trial and the third for customizable install distros of linux.... But as of yet I still only have WinXP loaded on the one drive... Need to learn GRUB customization a little and learn how to install my dang WiFi card so I can update stuff.... Let me know how you decide to do this...I want to install 98 purely to play one of the most underrated and involved games that I have, "Sanitarium"...

Just a question... Which is better? My config is three hard drives: IBM IDE 120GB with nothing on it and no format WD SATA 250GB with WinXP on 150GB partition with an unformatted 100GB partition WD SATA 74GB with SuSE 9.1 64-bit installed... I originally installed SuSE with GRUB on the 120GB drive...and it worked....as long as I wanted to get into SuSE....but if i select WinXP it stops...some error message comes up that is Linux related... I guess my question is should I use Lilo or Grub (I plan to add more OSes later) i.e. which is more configurable? Second should whichever I use go on the same drive as the Linux partitions? The error comes up even if I have the 120GB first in the boot order then the 74GB then the 250GB...
-
And now I have GRUB installed on same drive as SuSE and when I select WinXP it says: root (hd1,0) chainloader +1 Help....
-
Thanks. That it what I thought. I want to work with it a bit and realize I can pretty much recover from mistakes in GRUB.... One question is that I want to install Linspire 4.5 as one of my distros....I know it pretty much overrides everything else or did they fix that in 4.5? Also if I install it on my IDE hard drive all by itself can I still use grub to boot the computer then get to the sole partition and installation on that single drive without corrupting everything else?
-
This is what I got... 1. SuSE (installed already) 2. Mandrake (have the Powerpack DVD) 3. Gentoo (interested but need wet feet first) 4. Xandros Desktop (heard it was a good GUI but I think one or two distros first would be the way to go) 5. Redhat Fedora Core (have downloaded i386 and x64 versions) Pretty much what I thought and the Dans have recommended. I recently applied for a job at Redhat in Raleigh (not tech job, training job) so maybe I should at least get Linux heavy if not Fedora heavy too.

Hi again. I finally have a WinXP and SuSE 9.1 Pro dual boot system. SuSE installed just fine on my SATA drive (though it didn't want to go on the Raptor on the same controller). Anyway, now that I have SuSE installed my Netgear WG311 doesn't want to connect. I am sure it is a settings issue as it was detected but won't connect to the internet? Any help would be appreciated....

What the heck is a "Hot Wheels" camera and how can it support that when so many other things are lacking?

As you guys (the Dans) know already I am hanging on to WinXP (at least for a little while, and at least I ditched my efforts to use Win98 for older games). My present setup is as follows: DFI LanParty UT nForce 250Gb Athlon64 3400+ PNY nVidia Personal Cinema FX5700 (yes I had to forgo the AIW 9800 due to aftermarket cooler size constraints with my Swiftech (i.e. too tall) Northbridge cooler) Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum eX 1GB PC3200 Corsair XMS PRO XL Memory WD 250GB Caviar SE (yes SATA, is there any other way?) WD 74GB Raptor (if you know about Raptors, you know these are all SATA) Sony DRU-700 DVD+RW Dual Layer Plextor Premium CDRW YE Data 7-in-1 USB Card Reader/Floppy Netgear WG311 Wireless-G PCI Adapter WinXP Pro SP2 installed on 200GB partition on 250GB WD (other 50GB is NTFS formatted). NOW...I want to install the beta of WinXP 64-bit with all the 64-bit beta drivers (remember this IS a test box) on the 50GB portion of the WD 250. First, what is the best way to do this (remember I have Partition Commander 9 which allows for easy adding of OSes)? Secondly, I have in-hand SuSE 9.1 Pro. Mandrake 10.1 is on its way and I am also going to try Linspire (I know...I know...do I need to point out Test Box again?). I plan to install all of these on the 74GB Raptor and in 64-bit installs (where available). What will be the best method and chronology of installation of all three Linux OSes? Should I use PC9 to format the raptor for Linux and if so what is the best file system given my planned final setup of three Linux OSes? Thanks for the help and Happy Holidays!
-
Yeah that makes sense. Supposedly SuSE 9.2 has better SATA compatability (or am I making that up because of wishful thinking?). I do have the ability to turn off each controller (both IDE and both SATA) so maybe I can make a hardware dual boot system i.e. just enable whichever drive I want to use the OS on. Plus I abandoned the Win98 portion of my test box so I have a rather large IDE drive available too (though I get goose bumps thinking about a 64-bit system on a 10000 RPM drive with such low OS overhead) I also think the one OS at a time is a pretty good idea, although it was poor planning on my part to already have purchased all three Linux distros (especially SuSE 9.1 when 9.2 is out). I just revel in the fact that I jump head first into the deep end when it comes to computers (I would strongly label myself as an early adopter) and who wouldn't want the power of an Athlon 64 system with 5 powerful OSes on it. Thanks for the help. I will keep everyone updated with my progress.

Yeah obviously I am not educated enough to edit the lilo since I don't even know what that is. So are you telling me to use Partition Commander 9 with its built-in System Commander? Or are you saying "good job on installing XP first" since it would try to take over if installed last? I guess what I am asking is that I think this is the best order of install: WinXP (already on there) WinXP 64-bit Mandrake 10.1 SuSE 9.1 Pro Linspire (I assume it is 4.5, I am getting it from Linspire.com and it is the latest release) I assume once I set up WinXP 64-bit on the 50GB I will dualboot for that drive...but then how will the Linux distros know where to go? How do I direct them to the 74Gb Raptor for installation? Also should I "pre-format" the Raptor for Linux and if so which file system?
-
Yeah well hopefully the Hampton Roads part will change soon. I am originally from North Carolina and will be moving back late spring.... Isn't this a Linux forum?
-
Just think if everyone had been so resistant to change from DOS to Windows...."GUI? Who wants to use that?" I remember when I used to play text based adventure games for hours on end....my dad was an accountant so we had one of the IBM PC XT computers...before even 286's.... Sorry about rambling and reminiscing.... Hey Dans...I have all my parts now...and I happened upon an IBM 120GB IDE HD. The plan now is to put Win98 on that (as well as some storage partitions for everything else), WinXP Pro on half the 250GB SATA, a trial copy of WinXP Pro x64 on the other half, and SuSE on the 74Gb Raptor.... YEEHAW!!!! (Yeah Dapper I am born and raised too....)
