To remove DirectX Do the following: Start > Run > regedit Browse to and remove the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX Don't delete any of the other folders or your PC wont work. Restart your computer and if you did above, DirectX 9 will be gone, and XP will have reinstalled 8.1 in the background on restart. Confirm by doing the following: Start > Run > dxdiag On the first tab, down the bottom it will tell your your directx version. Should now say DirectX 8.1 Now run the Directx 9 installer.

Most times that I have seen Directplay errors like this has been from when someone tries or has tried to uninstall Directx with programs that do not do the job cleanly. Try DirectX Happy Uninstall then install DX again but I do not guarantee it will fix the errors. Doing a repair install of XP does sometimes fix this.

Do you find any yellow exclamation marks by sound in device manager? While in device manager go to the top of the window and select View > Show hidden devices and see if you have any yellow exclamation marks by any hidden devices.

Sounds like either power supply or motherboard problem. First try turning off the power supply with the switch on the back of PC then plug PC in and turn switch back on. If that does not work then try resetting the CMOS.

When you say this cd is for another system I wonder whether or not this is a retail disk or one that came with an OEM computer. If it is an OEM disk it may just be a restore disk. You could try exploring the disk with Isobuster and if all the files are there then extract them.

One reason could be bad ram. Check your RAM using memtest86+ and run at least 5 passes if you don't get earlier errors. Also try the modules one by one and in different slots.

If you are getting 40 to 50 upload from those numbers you gave then that is right. Look at the numbers below the graphics on that test as you will see more. Example from mine: Download Speed: 7055 kbps (881.9 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 353 kbps (44.1 KB/sec transfer rate) As you can see i get 353 kbps upload which equals 44 KB.

What are the advertised speeds for upload from your ISP? If you do not know then here is a TEST.
