Start->Run "Regedit" and navigate to this key: HKEY_USERS. If it doesn't have a Data entry in the right pane that reads: (value not set), double click (Default) and delete it. If it does, check your HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 keys for the same (For example: S-1-5-21-823518204-1770027372-682003330-24620). So, the (default) value needs to be (value not set). This information was provided by Kellys-korner-xp.com http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/top10faqs.htm: "Where did my Sounds go?" -> "System Sounds are missing:" Try these

SuSE 9.1 Professional cost me around $90.00 at CompUSA although you can do an FTP install of SuSE Personal at no charge. In my mind, SuSE is the very best distro to begin using if you've never used Linux and migrating from Windows. It has a lot of easy to understand and very intuitive utilities to get you going. Latest SUSE I have used was 8.1 Pro. Agreed, it was easy to understand and setup. After the HD where it was installed, brutally died, I moved back to Windows. It was old HD anyway... Quote: In the live CD catagory, Knoppix of course is the most popular Debian based version, but in my mind, Mepis is tops. Again, it has a lot of easy utilities to get you going, and with Debian's apt-get package utility with the Synaptic front end, downloading and installing any of thousands of programs is mind numbingly simple. I'll have to try that Mepis some day. I am currently playing with Red Hat 8. Things done: * Backups, backups... * NTFS support installed. * MPEG Layer 3 installed. Things not done: * Checked that Windows installation still works... This message was sent from Red Hat Linux 8.0. (Psyche) Kernel 2.4.18-14. on an i686 (I did not download this, found old CDs ).

properties window slow to appear
Wilhelmus replied to HyperBlade's topic in Everything New Technology
You mean file's properties window? Try this: Quote: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread31429-1.html Look up NIRSOFT online, & here too... they have a program that will vector thru ALL of the .DLL based GUIDS & Shell + Directory right-clicks in the registry and allow you to remove, repair, reset, & just in general? View & FIX them! The program to use that fixes these types of hassles is called: ShellExView http://www.nirsoft.net or http://nirsoft.cjb.net * The technique used to fix it? Let it run, & find ALL of the rightclicks Explorer.exe shell extensions & then once it does? DEACTIVATE THEM! (That's right, ALL of them wholesale... & then? Reactivate them again by checking their checkboxes once more, except for this new faulty one!) Apparently, the program automated using regsvr32.exe (or just used Win32 API calls directly) for registering/unregistering OLEServer & other std. DLL's used in shell extensions via this program, automating what is ordinarily a DRUDGERY to do manually following GUIDS all over the registry! I don't believe a reboot will be required either, since this is simply GUID registrations/creations with Explorer.exe Shell, their broker via the registry. When I saw this program? I was like "Man! Why didn't I think of that & design it?" (Probably because I don't design .DLL based right-click shell extensions is why... ) APK P.S.=> This "FIX" has worked here for several folks here in the past 2-3 months already in jams like yours... if you search NirSoft in the search engine, you will see what I mean! Hope this works, it should as it has a good "fix" trackrecord, & consider it tit-for-tat, payback - what goes around, eventually comes around, eh? apk -
Have you checked that the DHCP Client service is running on services? Start->Run: services.msc. Locate the DHCP Client service and make sure it starts automatically. Does your Event Viewer have errors/warnings about DHCP? Do you have installed/uninstalled Symantec's antivirus? Quote: You might experience a problem with the DHCP client address if you uninstall Symantec's Norton AntiVirus but leave the application listed as a dependency for the DHCP service. If you check the System log, you might notice the following error: Error 7003 - DHCP service failed to start because dependency service SYMTDI will not start. To resolve this problem, perform the following steps: Start a registry editor (e.g., regedit.exe). Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dhcp registry subkey. Double-click DependOnService. Remove SYMTDI from the list, then click OK. Click here to view image Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

If this happen to monitor: try selecting "640x480" from the game shortcut's compatibility tab. If that does not fix it, then, as dosfreak said, it is refresh rate problem. Try dropping your rate. Like from 85 hz to 60 hz.

What Windows? XP? Can you shutdown your computer in safe mode? <edit> For IPconfig, try running "ipconfig /all" and either disable ZoneAlarm or add ipconfig to trusted applications. In Program Control->Programs->Add. </edit>

Dual Installation of Windows XP, how can I remove one of them
Wilhelmus replied to Jeremy B's topic in Legacy OS
Click Start->Run. Type: "notepad C:\Boot.ini". Post the contents of the file to here. -
For example in Windows 2003 Server you can: 1) specify the Logon script on the "Profile" tab of the user properties dialog in the Active Directory Users and Computers. 2) specify a logon script in Group Policy. If your client(s) have Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT, group policy is not applied on computers with these osses(sp?). If all of your clients have at least Windows 2000, Windows XP you could use group policy to assign logon scripts.

Can we see your hijack this log? What OS you got? XP? If you got XP then: Disable Simple File Sharing 1. Open My Computer from the Start Menu or Windows XP Desktop. A new My Computer window will appear. 2. Open the Tools menu and choose the "Folder Options..." option from this menu. A new Folder Options window will appear. 3. Click on the View tab and locate the "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" checkbox in the list of Advanced Settings. 4. To enable Simple File Sharing, ensure this checkbox is checked. To disable Simple File Sharing, ensure this checkbox is not checked. Click inside the checkbox to alternately enable and disable the option. 5. Click OK to close the Folder Options window. The settings for Simple File Sharing are now updated; no computer reboot is required. jerry atrik's tip Quote: right click the nasty file (In your case: "vimmll.exe") properties/security tab/advanced uncheck the "inherit from parent permissions" box yes to the annoyance popup apply remove all users (including system) from the groups/users box yes to the annoyance popup reboot the file is now unable to do anything u can either leave it or re-take ownership and delete it (because the system didnt have permission to load it it wont load at boot)

See the "Edit" button? Click Tools > SwitchProxy to access all the SwitchProxy features. You can add, edit and remove proxies by clicking the "Manage Proxies" menu item. Firefox's proxy settings: Tools - Options - General tab - Connection Settings.

new here, trying to install janes F-18 on my win2k machine
Wilhelmus replied to Invmaniac's topic in Games
Create a shortcut to the install executable, right-click on the shortcut, go to properties and choose "Win95/98/Me compatibility mode" then try to run it. -
Copy "autoexec.nt" and "config.nt" files from "C:\Windows\Repair" to "C:\Windows\System32". And upgrade your antivirus & antispy/adware programs.

Quote: http://www.cs.uu.nl/wais/html/na-dir/cdrom/cd-recordable/part3.html - Check your software version. You may need a newer version of the software for correct operation with your hardware (yes, even if you received the software with the recorder). Most, if not all, CD recorder software publishers have web sites with updates. - Update the software. Even if the software is new enough to be compatible, there's some chance that your bug has already been fixed. - Under Windows, check your ASPI layer. - If you've tweaked your PC BIOS to the limit and are overclocking everything, reset it to defaults and see if your problems clear up. You can always tweak it back. If you're using a motherboard with a VIA chipset, make sure you are running the absolute latest version of the VIA drivers. - Some problems with PC ATAPI drives go away when DMA is turned off for the drive (via the Win9x device manager. You might also need to uninstall incompatible bus-mastering drivers. - Under Windows, rename \Windows\System\Iosubsys\scsi1hlp.vxd to something that prevents it from being loaded ("scsi1hlp.vx_"). See if your problems get better. scsi1hlp.vxd is only required for compatibility with old SCSI devices. - If you have an older recorder, and it seems to be getting progressively worse over time, it may need to be cleaned. Read the FAQ through. And try if those help.

I'll post the whole screenshot when I get home. Have do to that tweaking again... the system was rather unstable when screenshot was taken, even MS Paint crashed, right after the shot was saved. I disabled all services, except Event Log, RPC, Windows Audio and Plug & Play. Disabled even firewall & AV (Of course, modem was powered off, when I did that). And all eye-candy were disabled... Perhaps now I'll disable Event Log and Windows Audio...

I noticed that on one thread ("Machine Check: Regs in event viewer on boot" :: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread22875-1.html), the right bar (where the Main Menu, User, Sponsor, Site Search, Google Ad Links, News Feeds, Users Online and Links are located) is totally black. This happens only on the first page. Second page behaves normally. Internet Explorer version 6 SP2 gives same. Mozilla Firefox's version is 1.0.2. Tried without firewall and AV. With default HOSTS. file. Cleared caches. No change. Screenshot

The page is now working, whatever Philipp did, it fixed the problem.
