I am at present using RH9, so can I assume by what you are saying, that it is not necessary for me to alter the hosts.deny file ? Andy

How do I auto activate my modem in Redhat ?
dsnd_medic replied to dsnd_medic's topic in Linux Customization & Tweaking
Hi Dan I'm using the gnome desktop, but was unable to find kppp, the only place I find I can set up the modem is in the network area. Is it located in an obscure place ? I'm only groping around with linux at the moment so treat me like an idiot :-) Andy -
I kept an article some years ago when I first tried redhat 6. Now some years later I have decided to go back to linux and found this article. It states that if you added in the line ALL: ALL in the file /etc/hosts.deny, it would stop others probing around your computer.....is this still valid information and is it still worth doing this ? Thanks Andy

Can I install linux programs on Redhat ?
dsnd_medic replied to dsnd_medic's topic in Everything Linux
Are you saying that linux software which is downloaded is usually source files and needs to be compiled on my Redhat machine ? If so can you point me in the right direction to find out where I can learn to do this please. Thanks Andy -
How do I auto activate my modem in Redhat ?
dsnd_medic posted a topic in Linux Customization & Tweaking
I have just installed Redhat 9, the OS see the modem OK, but if I want to go on the Internet, I have to go into the network setup area as administrator and manually set the modem to active. How can I set it up to activate when I start up my browser ? Thanks Andy -
Can I download any linux drivers or programs to run on Redhat 9 or do I have to get them from the redhat website. The reason I ask is because I downloaded minicom for redhad and it unpacked an loaded OK (although I never did find out where the program was in the system and thus couldn't run it) but when I downloaded a different terminal program that was linux compatable (kermit) it kept giving errors when I tried to unzip it. Can anyone advise on the above points...even the one in brackets...please Thanks Andy

Thanks, I'll give it a try, my only concern is that I will have to do this everytime I boot up the system. If this is the case where can I add code/script to correct the problem or is this the norm for mandrake ? Thanks Andy

Hi I have played around with redhat 9 for a few weeks but decided I like to see another linux version, so I loaded up Mandrake 10. I overwrote redhat so it's the only system on my good old dell GXpro. I have 128M of RAM. It loaded OK but when it came to logging onto it, it didn't give me a graphical login box I had expected only a text based one. I logged in as a user and gave it the password and it simply went to a screen text prompt. There was no Xwindows. I was stumped, I tried startx but it didn't like that !! can anyone help me out here, do I need to re-install it ? Look forward to some comments, it too ages to load it up. Redhat was so easy to load. Thanks Andy
