XP x64 and Fedora Core 5 x86_64 Dual Boot

I haven't looked at this first link much, yet, but it looks pretty good. Here it is: http://www.linuxcommand.org/ Another one is this: http://www.linuxsurvival.com/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=1&meid=-1 I learned a lot from the second link (linux survival). It was real basic and simple stuff, but it taught me the fundamental idea of command line. I am by no means, any kind of pro at command line, but after "linux survival" I found myself using basic commands, and experimenting more. Also, being able to understand the things I was doing, that I picked up at the "how to's" and tutorials. You will need to have java enabled (which the installation notes from the previous link cover), to be truthful, I went to the site using xp, until I got java enabled in FC4 (prior to FC5). No matter how you do it learning the ideas behind the commands is well worth it. Some of these guys here can remember and tell how pitifully helpless I was when I first started coming around this site, I had no previous experience with command line AT ALL! Hope this helps Justbill

XP x64 and Fedora Core 5 x86_64 Dual Boot

My humble opinion, I "cut my linux teeth" on FC3, upgraded to FC4, and now to FC5. Personally, I think FC5 is a huge improvement on FC4, much faster, more attractive, and I like the way the package management works now! Its easier to get what you want! Yumex its kind of nice, I had to install that after the initiall install, the list could go on, and on. This is just my opinion! If you are just a little bit comfortable with the command line, you'll do fine with FC5. I believe FC5 is as close to being "drop in and run", end user, desktop distro, as I've seen yet. You may want to look at this: http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_core_5_installation_notes.html#Yumex to get some things running, these notes worked GREAT for me! Of course, I'm not using x86_64, so I can't speak to that! Justbill

    FC5 Up and Running

Well, I pulled out the soundblaster, and went back to the "onboard audio" on this box, and now I have sound. I guess the problem is solved, would have been nice to be able to use the soundblaster. I guess Creative Labs are not real supportive of linux? Justbill

    FC5 Up and Running

Well, so far,so good! Got Flashplayer & Java going, so far the only thing that is being a problem is the sound. Durring the installation, FC5 detected and test played my "Soundblaster", with no problem, now, no sound! I have brought all the levels up in alsamixer, but still no sound. FC5 also has something else in there I don't quite understand, its called mixer00 (OSS mixer) Oh well, its just been released, there are bound to be a few problems Justbill

    FC5 Up and Running

I saw that! I didn't have any problems dual booting FC4 when I had it on this box (Win XP & FC4 previously), but, I didn't have any answers to anyones problems either! It just worked (FC4)for me. Looks like there are a lot of improvements in FC5. Tonight I have to try to get Flashplayer, and Java working on this thing, so, I'll post back later, and tell how that went. Justbill

    FC5 Up and Running

No problem whatsoever! Kind of need to pay attention though, things look a little different durring the install, than they did in FC 3 & 4. I did have a crash the first time I tried to install, I tried to install extra packages from the disc, and crashed on disc 5. I installed again, and this time installed the "default" installation, and added the packages afterwards using the package manager, and everything went fine. I'll Be truthful, I haven't had much of an oppurtunity to look around in this os yet, but what I've seen so far its really nice! I was beginning to get a litte tired of Fedora 4, all the rpm dependancy problems I would run into, trying to install stuff. On my other computer I installed Ubuntu 5.10 "Breezy", and truthfully have been very excited about that distro, and preffered using that machine (old HP Pavilion 6630, 500mhz Celeron, 256mb ram), and had considered moving away from Fedora all together, and put Ubuntu on the main machine (Compaq Presario SR1426NX, 2.93ghz Pentium 4, 1.5gb ddr2 sdram), but the kids talked me into giving FC5 a whirl, and I'm glad they did! FC5, I am getting excited about, lots of nice stuff, and seems to run faster on this machine than FC4 did Justbill

HELP!!! how do i install amsn?

Hi mexgirl87! I also have Ubuntu 5.10 on one of my machines. You really don't need the download you have. On the top of your screen go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Open Synaptic Package Manager, and in the window on the right, scroll down until you see amsn in the listing (be sure to have "All" selected in the window to the left). Click on the box to the left of "amsn" and select "mark for installation". Another dialog will open, with required packages, click on "mark" in the bottom right hand corner, and then click "Apply" at the top of the page. That should do it for you! Synaptic Package Manager is a great tool in Ubuntu, really makes adding software easy! Post back if you have any problems, but, you shouldn't have any problems. Justbill

    Anti-Virus on Linux

Hello All! As many of you know, I still consider myself a new linux user. I have seen different threads on this subject, and would like some input from the knowledgeable community here. I saw over the weekend that McAfee ofers virus protection for linux, and has identified a worm from 2002, the slapper worm. Is this something that the linux community, and or distro developers have dealt with? I am running SuSe 9.3, is there a risk to my system, and or my privacy? Is this something I should re-take a look at and consider purchasing and installing on my system? Does anyone here believe that as the popularity of linux grows that the danger of malicious programs grows also, and is this kind of product the answer. One of the main reasons I switched to linux from M$ windows was security. Of course, now I know the other HUGE benefits of a linux system (well, some of them anyway). Any how, any thoughts or insights on this topic? Thanks Justbill this is a link to McAfee site, about slapper worm http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99693.htm#VirusChar .com

    Anti-Virus on Linux

Thats a matter of personal preference! I have all the KDE apps in Gnome, and prefer the uncluttered desktop of Gnome. Justbill P.S. when I installed FC4, I installed "Everything", and a large amount of the stuff I use is KDE, but I have the Gnome desktop

    Anti-Virus on Linux

So, does this clamav work alright with Gnome? Also, I will be re-configuring my firewall this weekend for NFS and a shared printer, will clamav be a problem with this? Justbill Afterthought: I am back to FC4 on my main box, and now have CentOS 4.2 on a 2nd box.
  11. I have gotten an Hp Pavilion 6630 machine from a friend of mine. It has a 500Mhz Celeron Processor, 64Mg SDRAM, and a 10GB hard drive. The problem I am having is that I want to put FC4 or similar on this machine. Anytime I try to install anything "linux" , I at some point get an error that the installer can't find the media in the cdrom. I have tried FC4, FC3, CentOS4.1, Ubuntu, Mepis, DSL, Beatrix, and Puppy, and I get the same problem at some point in the install. I thought at first maybe the cdrom drive was faulty, but I have successfully installed Windows 98 SE, twice this evening,on this box. I am at a loss, as to what is causing this problem! Can anyone offer any thoughts on this. Thanks in advance for any help! Justbill

    Toolbar gone in MS Word

Hi all! This is my first stop on trying to find a solution to this problem. A friend of mine has somehow lost the tool bar at the top of the page of MS Word. I was wondering if anyone here could give me a clue how to get this tool bar back. I have to confess, I have forgotten how to manipulate MS programs (yeah, I'm one of those linux guys:-) ). Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Justbill

    Tried to Install FC4

I recently tried (several times) to install Fedora Core 4 on my machine. I downloaded the fc4-i386-disc1-4.iso. I used K3b to burn them, I did select "New data Project">tools>CD>Burn iso Image. I burned at 8x speed. Every time I tried to insall (I also tried the DVD image with the same results) Fc4 would come to the first main page, I would select "enter" to install in graphical mode (I also tried text, to no avail), FC4 would begin to load the kernel, and then I would get this: [<c01202eb7>] panic+0x13b/0x1b0 [<c0416b4d7>] mount_block_root+0x39/0x50 [<c0416cc9>] mount_root+0x39/)x50 [<c01002a0>] init+0x0/0xf0 [<c0416d1e>] prepare_namespace+0x3e/0x120 [<c0100357>] initx0xb7/0xf0 [<c01012b1>] kernel_thread_helper+0x5/0x14 [<c014d737>] softlockup_tick+0x87/0x160 [<c0108a93>] timer_interupt+0x63/0x170 [<c014d9b3>] handle_IRQ+0xbc/0x2e0 [<c014da9c>] __do_IRQ+0xbc/0x2e0 [<c0105a81>] do_IRQ+0x51/0x90 ========================= [<c0103c4a>] common_interupt+0x1a/0x20 [<c012007b>] __set_personality+0x19b/0x220 [<c0112449>] delay_pmtmr+0x9/0x20 [<c0208c89>] __delay+0x9/0x10 [<c01202eb>] panic+0x13b/0x1b0 [<c0416b4d>] mount_block_root+0x8d/0xf0 [<c0416cc9>] mount_root+0x39/0x50 [<c01002a0>] init+0x0/0xf0 [<c0416d1e>] prepare_namespace+0x3e/0x120 [<c0100357>] init+0xb7/0xf0 [<c01012b1>] kernel_thread_helper+0x5/0x14 Can someone tell me what the problem is? 16. I have 2 computers sharing an internet connection on a Belkin router. This is a wired network! When I first connected them to the router, I had to change my printer configurationon on the no.1 box to a shared printer, in order for the printer to print. Which leads me to my question. Does this Belkin router tie my 2 computers together in such a way, that I can print on the printer that is connected to box #1 (usb connection) from box #2 (2 boxes connected by router)? How would I go about file sharing? Are there any good tutorials, on this subject (preferably written in everyday english )? I believe there is a way to get this to work, I just need some direction here! Home Network

I have recently installed a Belkin router on my 2 machines. This is NOT a wireless network! It is hard wired. Internet connection for both computers is great! My question is this, evidently a router will do much more than let 2 computers share an internet connection. When I tried to print something (after installing the router), I had to change my printer configuration to a shared printer. So does this mean that I can do something on the computer in my bedroom, and print it on the printer that is physically connected (usb) to the computer in the front room? And what about file sharing? Can my kids and I play games with each other, using the 2 machines? Are there any good tutorials for the technologically challenged, such as myself? Here are my machines and what I am running on them: Main (front room) Compaq Presario SR1426NX 2.93 GHz Pentium 4 512MB PC2-3200 DDR2 SDRAM 160GB 7200RPM Serial ATA hard drive dual booting win XP and FC4 Second HP Pavilion 6630 500Mhz Celeron 256MB ram 80GB hard drive dual booting win98 and CentOS 4.2 We really very rarely boot either computers into M$ windows, so I really don't care about XP and 98 playing together, but I would like to be able to have CentOS and FC4 communicating with each other here. Thanks Justbill

Hmmm, I have, in the past used fdisk, off of a win 98 floppy to remove any partitions, including a linux partition. That was on an older machine, and running FC3 by itself (no windows). Another possoibility would be using a media wiper. I have also used "Wipe Drive" in the past, THIS WILL REMOVE EVERYTHING from your hard drive! You will have to have an operating system to reinstall (the win xp cd). Justbill

Fedora Core 4 vs. SUSE 10.0

You may not be missing much! Even though I am running Fedora Core 4 on my main computer, it is primarily because the wife and kids like it! I had a good deal of problems getting it to install myself, it crashed severall times at the initial boot, and then I found out that I had to give it some commands just to get started, like: linux resolution=1024x768 and acpi=off And then at that as I said before, several things still don't work correctly. Personally, I prefer using this smaller, older machine that I am using now, with CentOS 4.2 on it. Everything worked from the start, and the install was simple! So, for me the jury is still out on FC4, but it aint looking good! So, like I said, You may not be missing much. Justbill

Is XP still accessable ? I only know of 2 ways to remove a linux OS from the drive. Either use a win 98 cd or boot floppy and enter fdisk at the dos prompt, and delete the partition that Ubuntu is on, or use a 3rd party partitioning tool, such as Nortons Partition Magic, and do the same (delete the partition that Ubuntu is on). Of course, if XP is still accessable you want to be sure to not delete the ntfs partition. I believe this will accomplish what you want to do. If your son let Ubuntu install using the entire hard drive, you realize, that Ubuntu formated and wrote to the entire drive, and xp is probably gone. Good Luck Justbill

    2 Q's 1 k3b and 1 firefox

Are you sure that you cd-r discs support 4x ? Some discs have minimum write speeds. I usually get 1x-48x cd-r's, however some are 8x-52x . So check the write speed of your discs. I have never had any problems burnning iso images at 8x , they always work for me. Not sure about you firefox problem, need someone with more experience for that problem. Justbill

Fedora Core 4 vs. SUSE 10.0

As an afterthought! You may also want to consider CentOS 4.2 . I'm using it on my second machine, its a HP Pavilion 6630 500 MHz Celeron 256 MB ram 80 GB hard drive CentOS 4.2 installed perfectly and easily, runs great, and everything worked from the start! CentOS is basically a fedora clone, and for me it has been one WITHOUT all the bugs! It actually seems to run better than FC4 on my Presario! And its specs are better: 2.93GHz Pentium 4 512 MB ram 160 Gb hard drive Just a thought about CentOS 4.2 , Take it for what its worth Justbill

Fedora Core 4 vs. SUSE 10.0

Hmmm, I think you'll be happy with FC4. That is what I'm back to using. If you remember, I was using SuSE 9.3, it was OK, but I found a few things that I could not do with it. I tried SuSE 10.0, and, like 9.3, it was ok, but still, there were things that I did with FC4 that didn't seem to work in SuSE. It seems like some of the commands didn't work the same as FC4, and getting extras in FC4 seems easier to me. I don't know how much room you have on your hardrive, but when I installed FC4 on my machine, I selected "custom installation" and then when I got to the page where you select the packages, I checked "everything" (at the bottom of the page). It does take up quite a bit of space, but, you get a lot more than in the typical desktop install. If you have the room on your hard drive, thats what I would do. I will say that FC3 seemed a little less buggy to me. FC4 gave me some problems durring the install, and FC3 always installed easily. And I really do not like the way "up2date" works in this version. I've been using yum, it just seems to work better, and without the snags. Yum does come installed on FC4, you have to open a terminal, SU & password, and then type yum update Any how, FC4 will be a lot closer to Mandriva than SuSE was, and you should'nt have any problems with it. ProMepis not seeing router!

Hi all, I just installed a router on my 2 machines. No problems with machine number 1, it works like a champ! Machine number 2 is being a little quirky however. I have ProMepis on this box, and it won't make an internet connection. How? You may ask, is ole Justbill posting this? I dropped my BeatriX live cd in, and it makes the connection just fine. So that eliminates a hard wire error, when I ran the wiring for this thing ( I am not using a wireless router). My guess is that I have to configure ProMepis manually (that was a real "rocket scientist" statement, I had to think long and hard on that one ) . So my question is HOW? Thanks Justbill windows 98 & ProMepis on a HP Pavilion 6630 500 Mghz Celeron 192 MB ram 10 GB hard drive
