Well thanks Jim, but thats not it. Its not an lcd (wish it was tho) Nope its in the program somewhere......Tried to reinstall but wouldnt let me, checked a few things and termennated itself. Never got past first few lines of script etc. So what does that mean? I have to repartion and start all over!!! ?? What an ugly ugly thought. Esp since i just got all updated etc...Phewy.

Hi all of you, I installed FC3 on its own disk. Went very well. I used YUM to update after install. A slug of them were ready. No problems with that. When i reboot just before desk top i get a msg that says it couldnt find (comcastnet) and i should add it to host names and might be ok. I went to gedit /etc/hosts/ and added it next to last line of local host where i was told to do it. It was to long and part of it jumped to next line. I thought that would be ok. So saved and exit. WELL......next time i rebooted, it went thru its process and then ended up on a black screen and not a thing else!! HELP HELP!! Please. ALSO. when i do alt-del-f1 it wont let me get into gedit to remove what i did. In fact it wont let me in anything. Always permission denied. Im not entirely sure what i did is the whole problem, but im stumped!!

Hi Dapper, Well, did as you said. All went well until i got to the part about alsamixergui. It said command not found. Just for grins i by passed it and it went to search for s. cards. Said didnt find and pnp or pic cards etc. So i guess as you suggested its time for that plan B or im missing something.... Appreciate alot your time and help with this. Ernie

Hello Everyone, Im installing mandrake 10.0. All is well so far. However iam unable to install my sound card. It is a Creative SB Audigy LS. I think model #SBO162. Mandrake didnt detect it at all. Well thanks again to all of you!! Got it all together i think. As regards the powerdown problem. I do have the enable apic;force apic,no force local apic etc etc. ONe of them is X'd on no apic... Could that be the problem. Kinda scared of it cause in the help feature it says i shouldnt mess with it and could possible not be able to reboot the system. If you think it could be ok i will try to unchedk it. Which then brings up another question. How do i make a boot disk in case i do screw sometning up bad? I got the 3-cd box distro. I assume might be rescue disk or someting in there, but would have no idea where to find it, what its called, or how to use it.....Again appreicate help. Thanks to all of you. Ernie

Hello, Thanks Danleff, i got the resolution thing figured out. Thanks a bunch for that. As to the power thing. Your exactly right, its shutting down but not powering off. I went to configure your computer and got to boot section. I couldnt find anyting to do with powering off etc. How do i get to place i need to be to adjust it to power off? Thanks in advance Ernie

Hi again everyone, Well ive solved some of my early problems THANKS TO ALL OF YOU.Now however got another couple. #1.How do you change screen resolution? Ive tried all the normal things i think. Been reading about and /etc/file. I messed with that and really screwed it up. It crashed! Had to reinstall pgm to get anyting back. Is there an easy way to do this? Im an EXTREMELY newbie. And im 68 yrs old. So think tank has slowed down some....lol #2 Mandrake wont shut down. Goes thru all the check lists and says ok. But when it gets to last on Power Down etd...It just hangs there. I sure do appreciate all your advise and help. It is fun, but kinda fustrating for an old geezer sometimes.... Ernie

Thank you for your help. I got it installed and going. Not real sure how i did it, but its cobbled together and does work!! Next question i have is how do i make Firefox my default browser? Or can I.....Like you said maybe there are "issues" with this...smile. Thanks again, and hopeing to hear more from you. Ernie

Thanks Root. Well that didnt do it.No problem getting to root etc. But when i type what you said always comes up as no such command, or no such diretory. I tried differnt combinations of things with that string, but nothing worked. Seems its still not creating a directory or anything. Any other ideas? From anyone? This has got to be really simple....but it sure is fustrating... Thanks again Ernie

I feel this is embarassing but im really tired of Windows BS! I installed Mandrake 10.0 No problems. Now i want to upgrade mozilla to firefox 1.0 Downloaded and couldnt install it. Saw a post earlier about creating destination folder and entering this command. user@box: mkdir -p /usr/local/internet/firefox Im supposed to go into a console and create a destination folder. Tried alot of things including a desktop folder....lol. Also... If im ever sucessful at this how would i get rid of mozilla icoon in tray and replace it with firefox icon? I truly would appreciate any help anyone could offer me. Its a rough learning curve and im 68 yrs old. Thank you all, Ernie
