MS knows what they are doing and what they want....there's nothing that Opera has that MS couldn't do themselves so there would be absolutely positvely no reason to buy it except for the reason I mentioned above. It's not like this is an antivirus product or an emulator...something which MS has always used 3rd parties for (until they bought them out). MS has been developing IE for the past decade (well....developing gives them too much credit....let's just say maintaining security fixes) I agree that M$ would be buying them(yeah I know, it's not happening) to shut them down, but I disagree with your statement that they would integrate some of Opera's technology into their own browser. Integrating some of Opera's technology would not require a "massive rewrite", it would require the addition of code, the same way new features are added to any browser now. Why buy it? Well, so much software is copyrighted, there's technology that M$ can't use, just like so much technology that M$ has that others can't use. Buy the company, buy the copyright. That in itself is reason enough. It's not just a case of disposing of the competition, it's also a case of acquiring their technology and copyrights.

eCondom, that's rich, heh heh heh Seems the M$/Opera story was just a rumour. Too bad... If you think about it, if M$ was to buy out Opera, they would most definitely transfer the technology to IE. nVidia wasn't stupid when they bought out 3DFX, I mean this is a much cheaper way to gain technology, let someone else develope it for you, then buy them out. "eCondom", heh heh heh, as if!

6600GT fits right in your range, excellent card, I have one myself.

Yes, you could say it's the "Yahoo" browser, but it's just a skin and some add-ons, otherwise it's IE. Works very well for me, no matter what you call it.

I've never had a security issue with IE, and I've been surfing the net since '98. I do run a hardware firewall, and I control my security settings. Checking for updates for IE also helps quite a bit. In fact, IE comes out with security updates on a regular basis, as they admit that there is always someone trying to hack their product. FF doesn't want to admit this. Ignoring that your house is on fire won't prevent it from burning down. FF has to address the issues it has with security, openly, otherwise, things can only get worse. I do find it amusing that people slag IE when they admit there are security issues, but applaud programs that do everything in their power to deny security issues. Who, actually, is more trust worthy? BTW, I didn't dump FF over security, it was the instability of the browser that finally made me swap back to IE. I originally dumped IE because it was slow, it's not slow anymore, in fact, it's as fast as, or faster than the last version of FF I used. I liked FF because of the tabbed browsing. I now use my ISP's(rogers.com in Barrie, ON, Canada) version of IE, which also gives me tabbed browsing. I have all the features of FF, and more, and it's rock solid. "Computer death wish"? I think not.

I like the fact that there are so many browsing alternatives and a person can let their own experience be their guide. Strangely enough, the IE flammage started right after your post, hahahahaha. I was enjoying FF, much quicker page loads, very fast browsing, I was impressed. Then I upgraded to 1.5. Bad move. Tried the next beta. Even worse, and went back to "Exploder". I know that everyone(OK, FF fanboys) claim it is so much more secure than IE, but the fact remains that IE is THE most common browser, so it is the most often attacked. As FF has just realized, now that their browser is so popular, it's vulnerabilities are being exploited. MS has been number one forever, so they were the ones being attacked by hackers, and they were the ones that looked like they couldn't build a secure browser. Now that FF has climbed the "browser ladder", they are getting a glimpse at what IE has had to put up with for so many years, people will hack them if they are popular. Now, FF has to deal with coming out with security patches, something they are not used to, and it's biting them on the butt. This is what happens when a developer becomes complacent in that they think they are safe. x)

Very cool link, many of the myths I found myself using FF, I dumped FF and went back to Explorer maybe 3-4 months ago. Not a single complaint since. Bookmarked the site, I'll take a tour through later. Thanks MT.

Sorry but it don't take much to crash that Peice Of Lard commonly known as Internet Explorer Of course it was ExpLODER, heh heh heh. But, since I dumped CA, no probs. I was running FF, but that started crashing, so I dumped it. Besides, there are still a lot of sites I visit that require Exploder, so that would mean having to have 2 browsers. The rest of Rogers stuff in their browser works, I'm impressed, so I'll keep using it. -

Heh, I do the same thing dude, I just happened to be awake this morning, hahahahahaha

Another thing about 98, installing it after you've installed XP is a no-no, unless you know what you are doing. 98 can't see NTFS drives, and FAT32 drives are far less secure than NTFS. Just out of curiousity, why would you want you drive to be able to have 98 on it? You have XP, so you know how much better it is, why put an inferior OS on it too? BTW, check for a BIOS update for your mobo, may solve the printer/NIC conflict.

First off, check the manual that came with your monitor, and see what the orange light signifies. Possibly, your monitor is going into standby mode, and not wanting to come out of it. So, what operating system are you using, and maybe we can fix you up so that your monitor doesn't go into standby mode? This sounds like one of those wee glitches, nothing major.

Help: OpenGL program works on Win9x but NOT on WinNTs (2000 & XP)

Thanks for posting the solution to your problem, I'm sure it will help someone else down the line. Props to you for finally figuring it out! -
Hang on there Sampson, he hasn't mentioned trying to start in "safe mode" yet. If that hasn't been done yet Weylok, boot into safe mode, uninstall the nVidia drivers, then use Nasty File Remover http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=582 in safe mode. Re-install your vidcard drivers in safe mode, reboot, and see what happens. A repair install takes as long as a format and fresh install, no point going through the hassle if it's not necessary. You're also leaving something out here Weylok, how did you reset your computer? Did you just hit the reset button, or did you "ctrl+alt+delete" and then choose "reset" from the menu? If all you did was hit the reset button, you could have messed up the files yourself, the reset button is always a last resort, if you can avoid it, AVOID IT! What nVidia drivers were you using, as in what flavour, and what brand of 6600GT are you running? The newest drivers are not always the best for your system, it's not just the vidcard, but the whole system, that determines how well the drivers perform. I run the 77.77's with my eVGA 6600GT AGP, the 81.XX's are a joke for me, and not a good one. 77's are available here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1145

They have said that it might be that the Everest programme is only reporting half of the cards speed, because my motherboard is making the card only work at AGP4X speed instead of 8X speed. The Everest programme says these things about the card.... Real Clock 202MHZ Effective Clock 405MHZ, but on my MX400 card the Real Clock and the Effective Clock are exactly the same. Could it be that the Everest programme is only reporting half the speed, and half the Bits because the card is an 8X AGP in a 4X motherboard? Well, I don't really want to say they're incompetent, but anyone who knows their way around a computer knows that running a card at AGP 4X does not make the memory bus suddenly half what it is at 8X. That card is 64bit. If you drop it in an 8X AGP slot, the memory bus will still be 64bit. It cannot change. In my opinion, these guys are either morons, or trying to pull a fast one on you so they don't have to refund your money. If they tell you it's a 128bit card, print this puppy up, and bring it in with you. http://www.msicomputer.com/product/images/comparison/VGA.pdf Or just tell them to go to the url themselves, it's right from MSI, and it states there is only one memory bus speed for the 5200, and that's 64bit. The Personal Cinema card is 128bit, but not yours. If they tell you any different, I raise the flag to them.

Thoughts on ZoneAlarm's / ComputerAssociates's Anti Virus Engine?

I have Rogers cable, here in Ontario, Canada. They have their own browser, which also has CA's anti-virus built into it. After a month of running the browser with the AV enabled, I dumped CA's anti-virus, I'm not impressed. My browser was crashing to the desktop constantly, and the error was always with CA. Lost the CA part of the browser, no more crashes. I run AVG now, no probs at all. I'm just not impressed with CA. Norton and Mcafee are notorius for taking over your system, and then they just won't go away. Tried Kaspersky, then "ATTEMPTED" to uninstall it, what a nightmare! I ended up with two of EVERYTHING on my system, every freakin thing now had a "twin". Twin folders, twin files, shortcuts, the control panel had two of everything, just one huge mess. Eventually, I had to format, even my restore point, which I made before installing Kaspersky, was the same, two of everything. I'll stick to the freebies from now on. BTW, I have a hardware firewall built into my router, so that's not an issue to me. -

It does what I want well (MOHAA + TV). Lessee, 80 Pounds is close to $200+ Canadian, yeah, that's a bit of a difference. Yeah, if you're not into gaming, no need to get a killer gaming card. I had the 5200, it's in my wife's system now, not a gaming card either, tis why she has it now. If you can play MOH with that 9250, be happy you didn't get the FX5200, although it has DX9 support, in every other way, especially performance, it was a downgrade compared to my Voodoo 3000 AGP.

Why the 9250? Dude, 9800 or better, or go nVidia 6600GT. What's with the 9250? This is a new system, I don't get it, unless you don't do any gaming...... :x

Just thought I'd toss this link out here, these are older games(some not so old) that have become freeware, no W4r3Z whatsoever, strictly legit. This site does not allow illegal BS. The site starts you off with points, and you can earn more by submitting reviews and screenshots. Uploads of freeware games also earn you points, which means more dwnlds. There's links on the site to other classic/freeware/just "freed" games sites, many of them not requiring reviews/screenshots/uploads. http://www.cgarchive.com/ Another one of my faves is here: http://www.the-underdogs.org/ Check them out, and enjoy.

Another site I just found in my travels, has a few goodies, TTD is one of my faves, hopefully I won't need DoSBox for it. From what I've heard/read, WarRock is supposed to be as good as BF2. I just dwnlded it, so I'll let you know. http://www.playfuls.com/downloads.html

ASUS GeForce N6600 - problems if using DVI interface
Relic replied to Phalanx-Imawano's topic in Hardware
Found some BIOS updates, but they're in a language I can't understand, possibly Russian, so forget that. :x Anyhow, I suggest trying some older drivers for your vidcard, start with the 77.77's http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1145, they work very well with my 6600GT AGP, newer versions suck for me. If the 77's don't work, try the 61.93's http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=904 While you're at it, grab NVTweak, gives you a lot more options for setting up your vidcard, along with the ability to overclock it. Screen adjustments included. http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=911 ***VERY IMPORTANT*** Always uninstall your nVidia drivers before installing new drivers, then make sure your system has been cleaned of the ditritus left behind by the un-installer, there's ALWAYS something left behind, which will cause conflicts. After uninstalling your old drivers, run Nasty File Remover http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=582 Hopefully, you'll get something that will help your frame rates. -
ASUS GeForce N6600 - problems if using DVI interface
Relic replied to Phalanx-Imawano's topic in Hardware
Unless your LCD monitor is a newer one, it's probably way too slow to keep up with games, even some of the newest monitors can't respond fast enough. This leads to "ghosting" amongst other visual anomalies. Although LCD technology is slowly catching up, it will be a long time before it can surpass CRT's, if ever. Electrons will always respond/move faster than liquids, that's just physics. LCD's may get close to CRT response times, but I doubt they'll ever surpass them. Also, the "Plain-Jane" (no offence meant) 6600 is not really a gaming card, the 6600GT would be the better choice. You haven't said whether or not that's an AGP card, or a PCI-Express. Give me some details, there may be a BIOS update/hack for your card to get you close to 6600GT speeds. If not, there's always NVTweak and RivaTuner. -
Originally posted by tucker: Quote: Originally posted by Sampson: Quote: Well, from what I've read, the difference between 8X and 4X is nothing to write home about. The FX5200 is a rcck solid card for basically Office Applications. They are not renowned for being able to be overclocked. So, you do have a good card. It will play games, but not at great framerates. It should have been pretty cheap. Everyone at one time or another has had lapses of judgment. Yes, and by looking at what it says on the MSI website about this card one could easily think that it was operating at 10.4GB/second.Relic warned me to be carefull about making this mistake, and I still made the mistake anyway. This is a case of learning the hard way. The card cost $111 NZ, so this is the price of the lesson. That does suck, that's $90 Canadian, not exactly chump-change when you still have to get another vidcard. Can you not return it? I returned my BFG 5500 OC when I realized it was only 64bit, no problems at all after explaining the problem, I got my money back immediately. If you want to play games, and stick with nVidia, you'll have to go past the FX series of cards, you need a 6XXX card. Otherwise, you can go to an older series, the ti's, ti4200/4400/4800, they will also kick that 5200's butt when it comes to gaming, but they don't have DX9 support. Then again, a wee bit less eye-candy with a card that works, as compared to a lot of eye-candy in a card that doesn't, the choice is simple. ATI has some cards in the $100 price range that will beat that 5200 I do believe(9600 series), don't know, I avoid ATI, too many driver issues for me, but I'm sure someone in here can suggest something in that price range. Sadly enough, my old 5200 128bit struggles running this http://petz.ubi.com/About+Dogz+5.htm on my wife's system. My Voodoo 3000 AGP was faster, in, well, everything. Better to save the $180 and get a 6600GT AGP, in the long run, you'll be much happier, I know I am.
-
My ti4200 128bit outperformed my FX5200 128bit, and a BFG FX5500 OC, 64bit. I snagged an eVGA 6600GT AGP it and kicks butt, on a PIII. 64bit cards are not meant for gaming.
