Yup, that's a 64bit card, it will be slow. 128bit minimum memory bus for today's apps and games. 64bit is a major performance hit, bigtime.

If you can't find anything with a virus scan, check the keyboard. I was going nuckin futz one time with my own system, I couldn't boot up, when I finally did, all kinds of funky things were happening, I was sure I had a virus. In the end, my "F12" key, and my "Insert" key were stuck down. I had just painted my keyboard. But, small pieces of donut could have the same effect, make sure the "forward slash" key is not stuck in the depressed position. Sometimes, the simple things can bite yur butt.

You're welcome. If you have your heart set on an MX4000, find one that is at least 128bit, not 64bit. Any card that is at least 128mb, 128bit, especially if you do any gaming at all. If you get a card that is only 64bit, you will be disappointed. I picked up an BFG FX5500 to replace an FX5200, but did not realize it was only 64bit until I installed it. My old Voodoo 3000 actually performed better than the FX5500 64bit. Check the specs of the card very carefully, 64bit cards can't transfer info all that fast, especially when gaming. 128mb of memory, 128bit transfer rate, and you'll be impressed, anything less, I doubt you'll be happy. Example of what you would want, decent price too: http://www3.ncix.com/products/index.php?...%20Technologies This is also 128mb 256bit: http://www.bytewizecomputers.com/products/7/21/630/6618 Good luck, and I'll stress one last time, get a card with a minimum of 128BIT bus.

Final link, your vidcard will work with that modo. http://www.playtool.com/pages/agpcompat/agp.html

If it fits the slot, it will work is basically how it works. I'm an nVidia fanboy, but ATI has an excellent visual on AGP compliance, take a look over here: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge As for nVidia, check here: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidi...amp;p_topview=1

That card is compatible right down to a 1X AGP slot, no worries with your 4X slot, go for it. My ti4200 would kick the snot out of that MX4000 though, and will work with your 4X slot, it's in a 4X slot right now. :^) Here's a pic of the specs, notice it's an 8X card running at 4X. Here's a shot of the AGP settings.

The more I think about it, the more I think it would be better to just toss the 40g, sell it, use it another system, whatever, unless you need 240g's of storage. Partition the 200g, use one partition for media/vid editing, another for gaming, another for your OS and normal/everyday apps. That would give you more control of resources for each partition, and better performance for your apps. I could be wrong, but seems the best way to go. If you're set on keeping the 40g in that tower, use it strictly for storage. Great place to toss your large files, and it won't affect the speed of apps on your new HDD.

How do you like the front page of NTCompatible? (Content)
Relic replied to DosFreak's topic in Feedback
I like it, much better than the old plain white page. White pages just bug me, too bright, and look like no real effort or thought was put into them. May take me a bit to get used to, but I think it's cool, well done. -
I'm with AZ on this, DX9 shouldn't have pooched all his games, something else is wrong. Try dwnlding new chipset drivers, and new vidcard drivers. If the vidcard drivers are too old, they just won't work with DX9. The BFG card you ordered is rock solid, and overclocks even better than what BFG sends it at. BFG has a bonus lifetime warranty, and 24/7 support. I've read good things about the card, although I'm going with the eVGA 6600GT, same 24/7 support, 2 year warranty, but an upgrade option that allows you to recoup the original purchase price of your current card, when buying a new card, within a time limit, of course. Either/or, the eVGA is cheaper, but the lifetime warranty of the BFG is very sweet, and they don't care if you OC it more than they already have.

Okay, if you really want to know what mobo you have, head over here and snag SiSoft Sandra, the free edition. http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=177 You have an Intel mobo, I can tell you that much. An 8X/4X card will work no problem in your system, I'm dropping a 6600GT into this system in a week, it's 8X, my mobo is 4X, it's just not a problem. 8X/4X AGP cards use the same voltage, 1.5v, and as I've already said, there's no noticable diff between 8X and 4X. The AGP slot is just too slow to make a diff. PCI-Express, on the otherhand, is a big difference. BTW, what card were you looking at? I'll verify if it's AGP 4X compatible for you, if that will make you feel a bit more secure about your purchase.

Well, start off by going to "Start/Programs/Accessories/System Information" and let's have a look at what you have now. If you have an MX 400, the very LEAST you would want to upgrade to is a ti4200/4800 series, better yet, a 6600GT. A 6600GT will run you about $150 to $170, no small chunk of change. I'm an nVidia fanboy, which I freely admit to, but the ATI 9600 series will also be a big upgrade for you, for about $100. An ATI 9550 would work well for you, no matter what your mobo is. Myself, I'll have the ti4200(Albatron ti4280 Medusa) I currently have running in this system right now, up for sale in maybe two weeks, as soon as my eVGA 6600GT comes in. I'll toss it to you for $50, gimme $10 for shipping, $60 total, and it's yours. That's provided you live in Canada or the US, across the pond will cost more. I payed $125 for it(Canadian), and I admit I have OC'ed it, it OC's very well, but it's been run at stock clocks forever, very stable card, and it hasn't been stressed. Lemme know if you want it, and I'll give you a date when it will be available, sometime after the 16th of this month at the latest, probably before then, depending on whether I get my new vidcard shipped to me, or decide to just drive down and pick it up(100 mile trip, one way). Later.

There is no discernible difference between AGP 4X/8X, a slight diff, but not noticable to the eye, only in benchmarks. An 8X card will work with a 4X mobo. What mobo do you have, and what are you upgrading from? We can help you in your choice of vidcards too, if we know what you're working with. The amount you're willing to spend on your upgrade will help in choosing/suggesting a card for you too.

Well, first check the access times of your old 40g and your new 200g, if the access times are close, use the smaller HDD for your OS. Things get spread out on larger HDD's, it's very important to keep them defragged.

Also what I need to do to fix it? Dude, you need some serious anti spy-ware/virus help. Restart in safe mode, hold the "F8" key down when you bootup, then choose "Safe Mode With Networking". Then go here: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and scan your system with "Housecall", a free online AVP scan. Once you're done with that, head over here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and dwnld Spybot, then scan your system. If you don't already have an AVP(anti-virus program) let me know, I'll post a link to a few very good free programs, you need an AVP in this day and age, and an anti-spyware program.

I'd hazard a guess that either your CPU or RAM is going all funky. RMA that puppy quick, it's only a couple months old, so get a new one, don't screw around with it. Lappies are notoriously hot, possibly a heatsink wasn't installed right when it was manufactured, so get it fixed while it's under warramty.

Downgrade your vidcrad drivers, along with your VIA chipset drivers. Having the latest drivers can sometimes toss a wrench into the gears when using older hardware. Get the http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=753 drivers, worked for me a while back. Currently, I'm using the 77.77 drivers, and they are working fine with my ti4200. Possibly, your MX 440 needs the older drivers to work. If you are currently using VIA's 5.04A drivers, try downgrading them to the 4.56v drivers. http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=1&CatID=1070 Hope that helps you out.

Are you installing the game from the original CD? Or, are you using a, ***AHEM***, "backup" copy? If you're using a "backup", it will continue to crash forever, and the patch from Lucas will not work with, ***AHEM***, "backup" copies of the CD.

XP Pro crashes - terminates explorer.exe shortly after startup
Relic replied to Samolyet's topic in Everything New Technology
Do you have the same prob when you bootup in safe mode? You can always try a repair install of XP, that's the SECOND time the "Repair" option comes up when you install XP. All other files will remain on your computer, but the Windows files will be replaced. Another question, was this a fresh/clean install, or an upgrade to an existing XP installation? -
How about rebooting holding down the "F8" key, then booting in "The last known configuration that worked"? Of try booting into safe mode, get to windows, then just reboot, and see what happens. Boot in safe mode, then restore to a point when your system was working. Let us know what happens.
-
So you're not actually crashing, when you shut down, through the start menu, you get a BSOD before the system shuts off, correct?

XP Pro crashes - terminates explorer.exe shortly after startup
Relic replied to Samolyet's topic in Everything New Technology
I see you edited and ended up dbbl-posting, no biggie, no chew-out for asking twice, done it myself. So, I've had the same prob, at different times, for different reasons, usually when crashing out of a game when I've had my vidcard/CPU OC'ed to far, I lose the icons when I crash to the desktop. Upon reboot, they're still not there. If you're "right-click" is still working on your mouse at this point(no icons on bootup), right click your desktop, then go to "arrange icons by", and make sure "show desktop icons" is checked off. If it is, uncheck it, then open the menu again, check it, then reboot. If that doesn't work, try it in safe mode. Call it a "Murphy's Law" glitch, but sometimes, she-ite happens. Hope that fixes you up. -
I'm having trouble getting the speakers on my new computer to work.
Relic replied to cam91b's topic in Everything New Technology
If the speakers are working with everything but iTunes, it's not the mobo, it has something to do with iTunes, I wouldn't replace the mobo, I'd look for a problem with iTunes. Make sure you have the latest update for iTunes. If the mobo had a faulty audio out port, it would be faulty for "everything", and that's not the case.
