I have cable myself, I bought a Linksys router which both my PC's plug into, the router then goes to the cable modem, and there ya go. Added benefits to buying the router is a built in hardware firewall. If your system requires software to use the modem, yes install it on both systems. My cable connection does not require any software, so I really don't have anything to compare to, I just plug in and I'm connected.

I have a "homepage" my browser opens to, Rogers.com, my isp. Has my local weather, my fave links in the sidebar, my local TV listings, up to date news, my personalized sports scores so I can follow the teams that I like, has links to my online storage, email accounts, the list goes on. So yeah, I have a homepage my browser is set to. Sure beats the hell out of any default page that any browser opens up to.

Although I voted "leave it alone", that's mainly because I seldom see it. My link takes me here, then I click on the "forums" link, I only scroll down the front page by accident. I think it's got a "message board" kind of look, which just doesn't interest me. Maybe I should have voted for "tabs", I'm not sure, but as it is, I just skip over it and head to the forums.

Seeing how no one else wnats to jump in, try copying your movies and music folders from the CD, and dropping them into the appropriate directories on your HDD, Usually in the "Data" folder. Use the same directory as on the CD. If there is no sucj diorectory in the game floder on the HDD, create one. Hopefully, that does the trick for you.

Sorry dude, I did not check the HP model # before posting, my mistake, my apologies. I wasn't trying to be mean at all, my wife is running XP on a 533 Celeron, so I know all about the probs associated with slow processors and XP. Obviously, you don't have a slow processor. I take it the case hase never been off the tower? It could be a heat issue, if the inside of the case, including the heatsink, are full of dust, it's overheating the CPU. Pop the case off the tower and have a look at how dusty it is. I imagine there's a way to get into HP's BIOS, if you can get in there on boot up, have a look at the temps, which should be under "system health" or something similar, let us know what temp the CPU is running at. Once again, my apologies, I'm not here to make fun of anyone, I was just lazy and didn't check out what processor that system was running. My mistake.

RAM. Without RAM, XP won't run. How much RAM in that HP, 32meg? Heh heh heh, I'm surprised it even posted with Home on it. Slap 2000 on it, it should be okay, and that's 1000 times better than '98SE.

Downgrade your vidcard drivers, sometimes, games don't work all that well with newer drivers, so try an older version. It's the weirdest thing I've ever had happen with an uninstall. Yeah, Norton meant cleaning the registry, but never a prob like this. My desktop ended up with double everything too, but I was able to get rid of them. All my start menu items now have doubles. I've tried deleting them, but they're back on the next boot up. I cleaned out the registry, but I may have missed something that has to do with Kaspersky, it's gotta be buried deep. ;( With the control panel, I can't delete the doubles, they stay, there's no way around them. Restore points do nothing. At least all my shortcuts on the desktop haven't had the double shortcuts come back. This has happened in every folder on my HDD. Haven't tried a repair install yet, man I don't want to do anything to mess up my HL game, I played this years ago on a Voodoo 3000, now that I can actually play, WITHOUT "God Mode", I really want to beat it. Alas, I must raise the flag to Kaspersky......

Have you tried clearing your CMOS, then seeing if your soundcard comes up?

I have a ton of conversion plugs, if you're anywhere near Ontario, Canada, lemme know exactly what kind of plugs you need. I have mouse adapters, printer adapters, man, you name it, I probably have it, and I don't use them, they sit in a box collecting dust. Even if you're in the US, shipping will only be like $3, I'll cover it, not a prob. If you can take a pic of the plug you want to convert from, or find a pic online, I'll let you know if I have the converter.

I do believe a coversion plug will cost you anywhere from $25 to $50, and a new joystick will run you $25, for a halfway decent one anyhow. First off, do you have these two patches? http://www.megagames.com/news/show.cgi?&...=downloads& http://www.megagames.com/news/show.cgi?&...=downloads& If that doesn't work, try copying your video and music files from the CD into the Mechwarrior directory on your HDD. I'm not sure of the path, but on the CD they should be under: Data\Video(or Movies) and Data\Music. Drag and drop the folders from the CD to your Mechwarrior folder on your HDD. The folder won't be there, so you'll be making new ones. They have to end up in the same directory as on the CD, probably Mechwarrior\data\video\movies. You'll be putting in the movies folder, it won't be there, the same goes for the music folder. If you're not sure what I mean, I'll be around during the day, I'll try to clarify, it's hard not knowing exactly what the paths are in your game directory.

I take it you've already tried restoring XP to just before you updated? You do set restore points before up[censored], don't you?

That shouldn't happen with a legit copy of the game. Is an account required to play online, such as with STEAM? I know I bought a used copy of HL2, then had to get the account name and password from the guy I bought the game off of, otherwise I would have had to jump through hoops, and toss $10 to Valve, to get it registered in my name.
