    help with xorg.conf

Hi, I have installed RedHat Enterprise Linux AS 4 on a Dell Poweredge 6650, it has an ATIMach 64 video card and is using a Dell 15FP Rack FlatPanel monitor. I have reinstalled Linux twice already and both times the install goes smoothly but when I reboot the second time after the install, when X windows comes up the desktop gets squeezed into a small rectangular shape on the screen and the monitor displays this error message "Input Signal Out of Range, Please select 1024x768 60Hz for best performance". The error message doesn't go away until I exit Xwindows and go back to the command prompt. I am booting to runlevel 3 and the command prompt environment looks fine, it is only Xwindows that is having the display problem. I have tried and tried to figure out if there is an error in the xorg.conf file, but nothing I try seems to work. This version of RedHat Linux doesn't use the XFree86 like other versions do and I am new to the xorg.conf file. Here is a copy of the xorg.conf file: # Xorg configuration created by system-config-display Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "single head configuration" Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" EndSection Section "Files" RgbPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb" FontPath "unix/:7100" EndSection Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "extmod" Load "fbdevhw" Load "glx" Load "record" Load "freetype" Load "type1" Load "dri" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "us" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Mouse0" Driver "mouse" Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2" Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "Monitor0" VendorName "Monitor Vendor" ModelName "Dell 1500FP" DisplaySize 304 228 HorizSync 24.0 - 60.0 VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0 # Option "dpms" EndSection Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "ati" VendorName "Videocard vendor" BoardName "ATI Mach64" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection Section "DRI" Group 0 Mode 0666 EndSection Thanks for any help

    help with xorg.conf

Thanks for everyones input, but I have figured it out. The kernel parameter SHMMAX was the problem. There is 8GB of RAM in the server and Oracle recommends setting SHMMAX to half the size of physical RAM - so I set it to 4GB. Well, this must have been too much because SHMMAX set itself to zero without giving me an error message. So I went along thinking SHMMAX was 4GB when in reality it was set to zero. As soon as I discovered this I set SHMMAX to something smaller (2GB) and Xwindows was able to start up and the display was back to normal.

    help with xorg.conf

Thanks for your responses. I have set the xorg.conf to use the VESA driver. There is 8mb of RAM on the video card and I don't mind not being able to use the 3D acceleration, since this is a server I can't think of an instance where I would need it. After I set the xorg.conf to use the VESA driver, I tried to start Xwindows but it gave me this error: "Screens found, but none have a usable configuration". Here is the Screen section: Section "Screen" Identifier "Screen0" Device "Videocard0" Monitor "Monitor0" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 16 Modes "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Viewport 0 0 Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection EndSection I have also tried this with DefaultDepth set to 16
