You would know if you fried your USB port if nothing works in them. Try installing a USB mouse or keyboard. If they don't work, then you might have friend your port. You can also try up[censored] your drivers. In regards to installing the hub, there are cards you can buy that should fit into a PCI slot which will have USB ports. From there, you can plug in a USB hub.

When you have unplugged your USB devices in the past, did you make sure to stop the port first via the icon in the task bar? A lot of people make the mistake of not doing this, which can fry your USB port. Believe me that it can, because I've done this in the past and fried all 4 of my USB ports on my monitor. If that is the case, then you are kind of screwed with those ports. You could possibly install a USB hub that connects to the interior of your machine.

A working 5.25" floppy?!?!?! I haven't seen one of those guys in a while. Although, I still find old school games that are 5.25" and wish I could play. That's wicked awesome!!!

If you are looking for a quick-fix, I'd suggest trying to use a virtual machine (VM). Microsoft has a free download of the application here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/virtualpc/default.mspx. VMs are good for running applications that cannot be run on newer OSs. Once you installed the VM, install Windows 98 on it so that you can run the game. It will take some time getting used to how to configure Virtual PC 2007, so be prepared for that. Also, it would be good to mention that I have never personally used a VM for running gaming apps; I've only used them for server test environments.

Not yet. Honestly, this error message does not seem to be affecting anything, other than having the event appear in the logs. Synchronizations are all going through as scheduled and clients are receiving the updates. I'll let you know if I do happen to find anything out.

Well, I think that took care of it. Thanks for the tip, Arran. My only concern is that the administrative password was required to be entered in and stored. Usually, that is something that I like to very much stray from. Are there any security issues with doing this that you have encountered or know of?

In regards to the two DCs, I've encountered connectivity issues when the network thinks there are multiple DCs on a single network. To be completely honest, I've not tried having redundancy for DCs, with the expection of having two NICs on a single DC. You might be better off getting advice on that from someone more knowledgable than I. Back to your main issue, though, it's probably a global policy. Why it isn't affecting the other two machines, I can only attribute that towards the time of setup. I had originally setup all clients to receive updates from our WSUS server and not allow them to go to the Windows Update site itself. Any clients added to the network post-WSUS setup did not have this policy attached to them, so they were free to visit/use the Windows Update site. Wierd, but it wasn't a huge deal (we're better off having that option available). Hope that was somewhat helpful.

So your machine was working fine until just after you replaced the headphone jack? If that is the case, then definitely make sure that all the cables are securely plugged in. If that doesn't work, try to see if you can disable to audio device.

Do the clients who are experiencing this problem have additional network protocols installed? The more protocols required to load, the longer the logins take, which sometimes causes it to hang. You also mentioned that you have 2 DCs. Any reason for this? That could be causing a problem, unless you have two seperate networks. Just a crap-shoot here: do the affected machines have a setting (either local or global) which erases all user setup information upon logging out? I've been on networks where this setting was applied and it literally would take between 5 and 10 minutes to login each time; this was for security reasons and quite a pain to deal with.

Do you have your Windows XP disc? You might be able to repair the OS with it. How much RAM do you have installed on your system? There could be an issue relating to your paging file; adding more RAM might help. Most likely, there is something wrong with your hard drive disk (HDD) or with the cabling which attaches your HDD to your motherboard. Essentially, this error is telling you that there is a problem with reading/writing to your HDD. Sometimes this is because of a corrupted driver, sometimes it's bad/loose cabling to your HDD. Have you installed anything recently (just before the error started ocurring)? This could help troubleshoot as well. If you cannot repair your OS with the Windows XP disc, and you know very little about computers (as you suggest), you might be better off taking it in somewhere to have them take a look. I'd suggest waiting to see if anyone else here has another option for you before you run off to pay someone, though. I have a user which has switched computer 3 times in the last couple of months due to staff reorganization. During the first switch, she noticed that most of her e-mails were not in her inbox (accounting for almost 150). However, if logged into her original PC, all of her e-mails were there. For a quick workaround, I performed a simple File and Settings Transfer Wizard, which solved the problem. I had to do the same for her last move, which is annoying and now starting to concern me. I've logged in from another machine and have been monitoring her inbox. It shows all new messages, but the second that she reads them at her desk, the message disappears from the PC I'm monitoring. I've even used Outlook Web Access, but it is the same result. She is now the event organizer for a department's meetings, which she set up and seemed like everything was working fine (this was before the last move). Since the last move, the events are not there. She has the invite, but cannot accept it because she is the event organizer. Because of her position, she needs to be able to edit these meetings, but cannot because they are not on her calendar. I've been banging my head against my desk (literally) for the last 2 days trying to figure this out and it's driving me insane. I can only assume that she, at some point, accidently worked offline and it saved this "setting" which is causing problems. I cannot find any PST files on the 3 machines. I've also performed searches for OST files, but to no avail. Anyone have any clues on this one? Related specs for all three machines: Windows XP SP2 Office XP SP3 All updates installed.

After all the searching I performed in search engines and the Microsoft knowledge base, it proved to be unsuccessful. I finally opted to simply read the title of each troubleshooting article for E-mail under Outlook 2002 and found this article KB287577: E-mail messages disappear from your Ibox after you read the e-mail messages in Outlook. Essentially, what happened was that the e-mail account at some point had been switched to deliver new e-mails to a local PST file instead of to the Inbox on the Exchange server. What was odd is that the PST file did not show up on the local machine. It ended up residing in C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Microsoft\Outlook. That folder was never there when I manually looked for it. After the change was to deliver new e-mails to the Inbox on the Exchange server, the regular Exchange mailbox opened and the Personal Folder (PST) showed itself. I had to look at the properties of the folder, copy the path, and paste the path into Windows Explorer Then I had to manually transfer all of the messages within the PST file back to the Inbox/Sent/Deleted folder. The calendar was the only tricky thing (more like tedious). NOTE: This will also work for Outlook 2003.

Well, I'm continuing to do research into this problem and it seems that I am definitely not alone on this. Many people have been trying to assign a custom-made icon to a macro placed somewhere on the Ribbon. What baffles me is that people have been requesting that Microsoft include this option into the ribbon since the second Beta release, but MS hasn't done anything. The closest thing I've found is a RibbonCustomizer beta that someone is developing to help with this: http://pschmid.net/blog/index.php. Unfortunately, he is still attempting to create a beta which will allow a power user to use custom-built icons in the Ribbon. Anyone have any luck yet? I'm going to be deploying Office 2007 in the next month and would really like to get these icons used for the macros. It will be a real pain to get the users to further adjust to this; I know if sounds trivial, but there are some people who are just now finding out how to use the signature field in Outlook, so this is kind of important to them.

Yes, this server is able to connect to the Windows Update site and install updates without any problems. ActiveX is updated to the latest version compatible with Windows Server 2003 R2. I'll go through the IE settings again to see if I possibly missed something, although I have done so about 4 or 5 times now; can't hurt to try again.

peterh is giving you probably the best shot you have to running that old of an application on Vista. The good thing about virtual machines (VMs) is that the Microsoft Virtual PC is free; in fact, I believe that each license for Vista comes with 4 licenses for VMs to run older applications. They may have a patch for DK, although it is not likely seeing how old the game is.

Is this a newly installed drive? If not, was your machine showing the drive before but not anymore? If so, did you recently install anything or update a driver? How old is the drive? In all honesty, you may have a bad drive. Try unconnecting the drive inside the machine and give everything a good dusting, then firmly reattach all cables and boot the machine back up. Worst case scenario, you might have to fork out $30-50 for a new drive.

I8042prt is the driver which controls the keyboard and PS/2 mouse for the Intel 8042 controller. The default IRQ for a mouse is IRQ 11, and this usually does not change; nor do I recommend changing it. You could try disabling the ps/2 mouse port if your other mouse is USB.

When you booted up Windows before the monitor went black, which card did you have it plugged into?

Right-click on your taskbar and select properties. Click the Start Menu tab, then Customize. Click the Advanced tab on the Customize Start Menu window. The first item in the scroll down area should be Control Panel. Select "Display as a menu" and OK out of the windows. If this does not help, then you may have a bit more serious of an issue.

Spam has grown to become quite sophisticated over the years. A general practice with all e-mail is to not open something from someone that you do not know. Your e-mail address can be picked up from simply placing an order online or subscribing to any service. It isn't too difficult for spammers to snag these, so don't fret too much; just be careful about what you open. Another thing to make note of is that, depending on your e-mail provider, you can make adjustments to your spam filter settings. It is a little bit of a pain to initially setup, but after some work (meaning a few weeks to sorting through things), it becomes worth it.

As with a great deal of applications, Vista has issues with running programs that seemed to run just fine on XP. Check the developer's web site to see if they have released a patch which could address this issue. Worst case scenario, you could always try to run the application in a Virtual Machine, although I've never used a VM for video games. Okay, if the problem still persists, it could be a physical error on your HDD, which is not repairable. Just before it restarts, do you hear strange clicking? If so, then it is the HDD and you cannot repair it; you'll need a new one. As for the the custom test, you can get to it by restarting your machine and pressing F12 just after the keyboard lights flicker. This will bring you to the boot options. Select "Boot to Utility Partition." This will bring you to a new screen which will allow you to perform diagnostics on practically all devices connected to your machine. Choose "Custom Test" and this will allow you to manually select what you wish to test.

Have you considered using a Microsoft Virtual Machine? It should be a free download and you can install a legacy OS onto it for applications that have issues with later OS's. Many of the compatibility issues aligned with Vista are resolved this way, which I am fairly certain that this is the same thing. One thing to note, however, is that VMs can run a tad bit slow. It's worth testing out, though.
