USB Device Not Recognized when using USB extension
Myke replied to nosignofwaldo's topic in Hardware
As silly as it sounds, have you done a Windows Update with the USB extension cable plugged in? It might show a driver update. That is at least a start. Also, what type of USB ports do you have? If you are trying to use a USB 2.0 device on a v1 USB port, then you could run into trouble with that as well. -
Event ID errors, PC Rebooting Ramdomly
Myke replied to shot34ever's topic in Everything New Technology
What version of Windows are you running? Also, with the 7003 and 7023 messages, what are the sources of the error? One last question (which may not have anything to do with your error, but needs to be asked): Before you machine reboots on its own, do you hear any strange clicking noises coming from the interior of your machine? -
I believe that you are asking how to prevent that data from displaying, yes? If that is the case, then Aaron is on the right track. To completely remove the ability to quickly display what recent documents you have opened (for whatever reason), right-click anywhere on the taskbar and click properties. Once in there, click the Start Menu tab, then click the Customize button. Once in the new window, uncheck the box in the lower left corner of the window titled "List my most recently opened documents." This will remove that section of the start menu from being seen while logged in as you.

Do you know if the disk still works? You may just have a corrupt disk. Glad to hear that the VM worked out for you, though, despite that 11th Hour hasn't yet worked for you.
-
Cool. Let us know how that works out for you.

No reason to be sorry, man. Vista has some issues with using applications that were not meant for it. Fortunately, Vista allows users to create virtual machines (VMs) for specific operating systems; this was done so that if a particular program had to run on a previous OS, the VM would allow the user to smoothly transition from the Vista OS to the VM OS. The VM can be downloaded for free here: Windows Virtual PC 2007
-
What exactly are you having a problem with? Try to be as specific as possible. The more helpful you are in providing us with information, the more helpful we can be. As cliche as it is, a rule of thumb here is "Help me help you."
-
Does your machine completely freeze (do you have to force a reboot)? When this happens, do you know if something specific is going on (e.g., music starts playing, special graphics)? You could have an incompatibility issue. Make sure that your machine at least has the minimum requirements for operating the game. In addition, try to make sure that you don't have anything else running when you start the game. Also, try lowering the graphics/sound qualities inside the game's options. I've never played any of the Sims games, but most games have the option to lower graphics quality to optimize speed. If you continue having issues, try to gather more information and post it on here so that people have a better idea of what is going on. For instance, tell us what OS you are running (including service pack), how much RAM (and type), etc.

Have you tried up[censored] the driver and firmware for the drive? You shouldn't have to worry about any jumper settings for something like this, unless you have made changes previous. Even then, that should not affect whether or not your drive has the ability to read a CDROM versus a DVD.

57. I do a lot of multitasking, so it's much lower on startup.

There are really two ways. First, use the installation disk that came with your PC and reboot your machine. When the screen comes up, use the recovery console option. If you are still not able to use your keyboard at this point, then this option will not work. While we on this, do you happen to know if your keyboard lights (Num lock, Caps lock, Scroll lock) light up when your system boots? The other way is by creating a boot disk in Windows on a floppy disk. When in Windows Explorer, right-click on the A:\ drive and select Format. In the pop-up window, select create boot disk. I'm not sure if you will be able to use a boot disk created on a different machine, but try it out. Worst case scenario, it doesn't work. No harm done.
-
It sounds like something is wrong with the motherboard. You'll have to find someone that will let you try out the HDD on a different machine just to rule the HDD out, despite what's already been tried. Have you tried booting up the machine with a boot disk?
-
Hmmmm... that provides a problem, then. If you could get the OS to boot up using the same HDD in a different machine, you could help narrow down the choices. You may have an issue on your motherboard, but it's hard to say. If a spare HDD won't boot up in the same machine (does it show the same message?), the it is a hardware failure. Make sure that all of the interior cables are firmly secured. While you are in there, check to see if there are any capacitors leaking goo or are popped up (although I'm sure your machine wouldn't even power up if this was the case).
-
Can you boot up the HDD when you install it in a different machine?

ArchRaven threw you some good advice, but make sure you know what you are turning off when you fool with msconfig. Also, don't manually edit your registry unless you are positive that you know what you are doing; this includes using a trusted software that cleans your registry. When you are in the task manager (hit CTRL + Shift + Esc), sort all of your processes by Mem Usage; this will tell you what is using the most system resources. You can go to sites like www.processlibrary.com to look up what each process is to determine whether or not it needs to be running. Also, you should run a disk cleanup (you can get there from Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools), which will scan your PC for files that can be safely deleted. After that, you should defragment your HDD (same folder). If you want to get a really good defrag, disable your virtual memory and then run the defrag. To turn off your VM, go to your system properties (hit the Windows key + Pause/Break key), then hit the Advanced tab, under Performance hit Settings, then click the Advanced tab, then click Change at the bottom. When the new window pops up, click the "No paging file" radio button, then click Set. Hit all the OK buttons to accept the changes. NOTE: Make sure that your system can handle having it's VM turned off, mainly enough RAM. Also, if you VM is not managed by your OS, then write down the Initial/Max values so that you can reset your VM to the way it was after you fully defrag your system. If you are not sure if your PC can handle having its VM turned off, then don't do it.

Yeah, you can replace the 256 stick with the 1 GB stick. Both are DDR, so you should not have any problems installing the card. If you are still apprehensive about doing this, just take a look into your CMOS settings before the computer boots up. It should tell you if your RAM stick was recognized, as well as its size.
-
Honestly, you're better off just replacing the 166mHz RAM stick. If you do want to try to use both sticks, I'd suggest placing the 333mHz stick in slot 0 and the 166mHz stick in the next slot. I don't think that you are at risk of frying your motherboard, but you should probably wait to see if anyone else has an opinion on this. I personally have never tried installing RAM of different speeds into the same system.

This has been an ongoing problem that is driving me insane!!! Backup Exec 10 is installed on one server. I was not able to perform a push install of the Remote Agent from the server to an ISA server, so I had to manually install the remote agent locally from the ISA server. The installation appears to have gone through without any problems. When I try to select the ISA server (from the selection list on the media server) to be backed up completely, both local disks, the system state and the SQL Server are greyed out. When I try to select the C:\ drive, I get the following error message: Selectin of this item is disabled. Possible reasons are: - The Backup Exec for Windows Servers Remote Agent on the remote computer is a previous or incompatible version. - The Remote Agent is not installed on the remote computer. - A license for the Remote Agent is not installed on the media server. - You are not authorized to acces this item. Possible solutions are: - Reinstall the Remote Agent on the remote computer. - Enter a Remote Agent license number on the media server. - Use a different logon account to connect to the remote computer. The agent is definitely installed on the ISA server. The version is definitely compatible; all other servers use the same version. The media server definitely has the license for the Remote Agents. I am more than authorized to access the item, being the administrator and all. I have already uninstalled/reinstalled the Remote Agent several times (reboots in between). The Remote Agent license number is already on the media server. The domain administrator account has access to everything, so there is no need to use a different logon account, although I have tried several. All other servers are backed up each night without any problems. It is essential that I get this working, as an insane amount of configuring has been performed on the ISA server; I cannot risk losing any of it. Shared folders on the ISA can be backed up with any problem. Below is the debug log from the ISA server after setting the Remote Agent service with the "-debug" parameter: [1976] 04/25/07 12:59:02 Opening debug log C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\RANT\logs\ISA-beremote00.log [1976] 04/25/07 12:59:02 CleanupOrphanedSnapshots(). background display frozen/ locked? please help....
Myke replied to vucnuts's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Silly question, but it's a starting point. Do you have privilages to do so? If you are using a PC that is controlled by another user, they may have restricted your privilages. Also, try logging in as administrator and see if you are able to do so. For a quick fix, you can open a picture in IE and use the "set as background" function. It's a good workaround while you try to resolve the issue. -
Essentially, he means disable the google toolbar. To be completely honest, the Google toolbar is more of a pain than a helper. I make an effort to either completely uninstall or disable the toolbar because of all the complications which it can cause. After all, how hard is it to just type in "www.google.com"? Disable the google toolbar by opening your browser, then clicking View, Toolbars, then click Google Toolbar. This will uncheck it, hence disabling it. A note on Flash: I've run into serveral instances where uninstalling and then reinstalling without a reboot doesn't resolve the issue. I highly recomend rebooting after an uninstall.

When you say that it is "sticky" or "jolts," do you mean it seems like your PC is stuttering? Check your Device Manager to make sure that everything is functioning properly. Does this happen all the time or only when doing certain things or with a lot of applications running? Also, check your Task Manager to see if there are any unneccessary processes running that could be hogging your system resources. A lot of new versions of Windows tend to come with installed applications that you probably do not need/want. It sounds to me like you might have a driver issue with your display adapter or RAM/Virtual Memory issues, but it could also be other things.

Would you be able to fill us in to some more details? What OS are you running on the workstations/servers? What are you using to authenticate (AD in Exchange vx.x)? What protocols are you using? Anything else you think would help us to answer your question.

Have you checked your event viewer? To do so, click Start, Run, then type eventvwr. The application log might have something an event detailing the reason. Also, give us some more information about your scenario: OS, IE version, etc. Have you had any error messages or Microsoft Error Reporting windows pop up when the application shuts down?

One of the clients on the network experienced an odd occurrance that I cannot figure out exactly what happened, nor how to prevent it. She was printing a couple of documents when suddenly she saw about 30-40 different windows pop up all over the screen. After looking into the situation, I discovered that all of these windows were the "hidden" windows of all active processes. I had to manually stop each process and reboot the machine. Everything is working just fine, but it has me wondering what's going on. No viruses or spyware have been detected. All security updates have been installed. OS is XP SP2. Anyone have any clue as to what happened or how to prevent it from occurring again? Thanks.

I think this has to do with your RAM as well. The file itself is almost twice the amount of RAM that you have in your system. Seeing as it is being executed outside of Windows, virtual memory will not be in use.
