My first pc was a Packard Bell. A whopping 75mhz - such speed !!! Don't remember the specs on it. The modem was only 14.4k. Had gotten my IBM Aptiva by the time we were getting on the internet, but got a faster modem in the PB to try to get hubby online with his own (my old Packard Bell) and burned out the processor. He was adamant that he could find a way to connect without timing out all the time. Very stubborn!! I tried to tell him it wasn't going to work that it was just too slow.

Friday, August 13, 2004 was the day Hurricane Charlie turned their world upside down.

Just joined this board recently and haven't noticed any hurricane threads. Techguy.org does have a hurricane thread in its Random Discussion section complete with updated weather maps folks (including myself) have posted for each storm coming along since last year. I too live in an hurricane area - Florida. Had to evacuate three times last year for Charlie, Frances and Jeanne. Thank the good Lord, we only got 66 mph winds at the highest. That had the power out for weeks at a time in many parts of our county (I thank the good Lord we were spared from outages as well as major damage.)We had lots of downed trees however around here. Hubby was busy getting rid of anything that came down or looked like the next storm might finish the job on other trees. Daughter was a nurse working in the next county and her usual 45 min. commute took 2-1/2 hrs. one way after she had to spend a couple of days at the hospital (they gave the nurses beds to sleep to make sure they'd come in and stay for the duration). She drove through a state forest loaded with pine trees - need I say more!! Thank goodness, she has since transferred to a hospital close to home now and they are moving into a brand new hurricane resistant facility next month.

Set color quality at 16 bits and screen resolution to 800x600. My Simcity 3000 runs like a dream now. (My resolution was set higher and on 32 bit.)

I'm the first to admit I know next to nothing about the inner workings of a computer, but I went through this same problem with my cheapy HP unit. Sent it out to HP and believe me they tried everything trying not to replace the hard drive (kept getting calls from their techs to update me because I was so good at making a major pain of myself) - but it turned out to be the hard drive after all!!!

Hewlett Packard installed a new hard drive in my computer and now I can't get SC 3000 to install. It's the only program giving me grief. I keep getting the following message: "16 Bit windows sub-system C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MS Windows applications. Choose close to terminate the application" Anyone have any ideas what is going on?????
