I installed Populous the beginning on my Windows XP Home SP2 system. When I try to run the game the mouse turns to the hourglass and then nothing else happens and the application isn't running in the task manager. I installed Windows 98SE using Virtual PC but the only difference was that the application was shown in the task manager but would still not run. One thing I noticed was that it did run on my other PC that was Windows 98 but stopped working when I upgraded it to Win98SE. Is it possible it is only compatible with the first edition of 98 or is there another factor involved?

The patch don't work. It won't work on XP Home, Win 98SE or Win 98. The file checker involved in the patch says a load of files are missing and damaged but in Win 98 it says none are missing just damaged.

It depends on the size and how much stuff there is on your hard drive. Roughly I'd say it could take anyware from 15mins to 2hours...

I'm using intellipoint for my mouse. As soon as I can get to my own PC i'll post here and tell you.

Then create a password that you need to enter before you can use the PC. I you open Control Panel -> User Accounts and select Change the way users log on or off and uncheck Use fast user switching, when ever you are done with your PC or need to leave it for a while hold the windows key and 'L' together and it will lock your PC!!!

My PC has XP Home SP2. I have an XP Pro cd which is only service pack 1. Is there a way I can upgrade to Pro without affecting the files on my HDD. Also will there be collisions involving the fact one is SP2 and the other is SP1?
-
Thanks for that jmmijo. I'm getting internet on the computer I want to upgrade so I'll do it then. Thanks for your help!!! EDIT : Just remembered to ask before I install Pro after doing this will I need to back all my files up or will it install Pro without deleting everything?
-
The Pro CD does not include SP2. If I upgrade will it affect it. (writing SP1 files to a system with SP2)

Don't tell her your doing it then...

My parents just bought me a stick of 1GB DDR 400MHz ram. I installed this and left the original 256mb stick in. The 256mb stick is DDR 333MHz. When I right click on my computer it says I only have 1GB of RAM when I have more. Is there a confliction here that means it isn't detecting the 256MB stick or something? PLease Help!!!!11

Windows reports 1GB still in summary screen. I entered the BIOS setup during boot and that said 'Total Memory 1024mb' If I can't get it to work I'm going to put the 256mb in our 98 machine...

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Motherboard/Products_Overview.aspx?ProductID=1792 I can't find the manual to download but the above link is all the details ect..

I'm afraid I don't have a manual for my motherboard. What do you mean when you say it may need to have its firmware flashed? EDIT : Found out what kind of motherboard I have and on the Gigabyte website it says 'Supports DDR 333/266/200 up to 2GB Memory' Is this why it won't work with 333 as well as 400?
-
Both brands of RAM are 'elixir'. I have tried switching the positions and that didn't work. Even when I removed the 256MB stick it said at the BIOS screen 'Memory Frequency 333' even though a 400MHz stick was in.

Hey guys I have a USB 1.1 storage that has never really worked bery well on my dads PC. I plugged it in yesterday and it came up with the little dialog saying 'New hardware detected' ect.... It did this on his PC occasionally. After it had done this I tried to open the drive from My Computer but it told me it was not formatted, anyway I went ahead with the format but it then said 'Windows could not format the drive' followed by 'The volume F: cannot be formatted'. It also does this on my own PC on which it has always worked fine!!! I really don't want to lose this drive, does anyone know how to fix this? Cheers

Heres the story, I installed the Windows Vista Transformation pack and didn't like so uninstalled it. The uninstaller removed nothing of the pack so i was stuck with the windows vista look. After an hour of trying to fix this I decided to remove Service Pack 2 to see if tht would restore anything. It didn't, all that happened was that my PC refused to boot in anything other than safemode. System restore totally messed up and reinstalled SP2 which resulted in a BSOD after every normal and safemode boot. I then used a recovery disk and do a windows re-installation but leaving all my current files and software on the harddrive. After this my PC got stuck in a loop on the boot screen, and would only boot in safemode when cancelling the load of SPTD.sys (or whatever its called) or in debugging mode. Instead of showing the normal Windows logon screen it goes to the Ctrl - Alt - Del logon but stops loading when it says 'Windows is starting up' Any ideas before i take it to the shop tomorrow evening?
-
The dude at the shop said he'd do a clean install, if its called that (the one that keeps all your files and settings) from a WinXP Home SP2 disk so hopefully that will work
-
Afraid I can't do that as it won't fully load to the logon screen even in safemode it just loops ' Windows is starting up' as it does the boot screen when i try a normal boot. I was thinking that when I take it to the shop they could install a new HDD put a new OS on and that and then I'd be able to boot from that and view and copy all the files from my old HDD onto the new one. Also even though SP2 has been uninstalled it still thinks it has SP2. The normal boot screen says WinXP Home but it safemode it says Service Pack 2 along the top..... Could that be part of the problem?

I installed Internet Explorer 7 and didn't like it so I uninstalled it and went back to IE6, now Automatic Update keeps asking me to download and install IE7 even though I don't want, any way I can get it to skip this update?
-
never mind guys i figured it out!

Hi, whenever I check the running processes list I have about 4 or 5 svchost.exe running. Is this all fine or is there something wrong? I only have running on my other PC.

I had a similar problem with my computer bringing itself out of hibernation after a few hours which was particularly annoying in the middle of the night as it is incredibly noisy! It doesn't have an internet connection and I never found out what it was.
