what ports? do u know any place where i can get that manual stuff?

I purchased the game of the year edition version of Half-Life and it wont work online for multiplayer. I purchased it so that i could play it online and it wont work. It says that it cant connect to the server and it says that my version is out of date and i should update it and when i check for updates there are none. Does anyone have any advice on how to get it to work? Thanks
