Scratchy Glitchey sound after installing Half Life 2

My son just installed the game Half Life 2 on a new Gateway laptop. Up until he installed the game, the sound was fine but now it is scratchey or glitchey. Any ideas as to what is causing this and how to correct it. Any info would be appreciated.T Thanks darrellx
