  1. I am attempting to install FC5 on a one disk machine that already has XP installed on it. I get the error meassage "An error ocurred trying to format VolGroup00/LogVo00. This problem is serious and the install cannot continue." My disk is 160GB. When I created the partition for the XP install, I created 100GB partition and left the remainder of the disk unpartitioned; approximately 60GB. When I tried the first te to install FC5 from DVD, I chose default using available space on drive, with the resulting error. Please help...this was antici[ated to be painless....I had wiped out the disk and reinstalled XP for the sole purpose of leaving more than enough space on the disk for FC5.. signed, totally exasperated...

    FC5 format error during install

Thank you God! (and danleff..grin). After a week (almost) I now have a working dual boot machine. I had to go in and edit the grub.conf file to change the root for fedora to (1,0) It was (0,0), and then no more error 22 or error 17! My apologies to the forum for changing topic and staying in this thread, but thank you again...this is a SOLVED problem and I am about to begin enjoying FC5. WOOHOO! John

    FC5 format error during install

Thanks Danleff....I realize removing a drive was not the way to do it, but the XP system was bombing out, I got frustrated and wanted to install Linux. Afterwards, I went and bought another harddrive and installed XP on it, so thats what happened. Anywho, being a newbie, I have played with chroot once and that was via "chroot /mnt/sysimage". When you say chroot to the hdb2 drive would you be so kind as to give me exact syntax?

    FC5 format error during install

More helpful information...I entered into root via chroot again, this time to display fdisk -l. Here are the results: Disk /dev/hda: 203.9GB, 203928109056 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 24792 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hda1 * 1 24791 199133676 7 HPPS/NTFS Disk /dev/hb: 163.9 GB, 163928672 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19929 cyliners Units=cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id /dev/hdb1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux /dev/hdb2 14 19929 159975270 8e Linux LVM Thinking I was clever, I edited the grub.conf file, but after looking at this output of fdisk, I think I edited it wrong. SHould I point to the hda1 rather than hda, since that is where fdisk is indicating the boot via *? Currently my grub is "boot=/dev/hda. I changed timeout to 30 and commented out hiddenmenu.

    FC5 format error during install

Well...I abandoned the attempt to install dual boot on one rive and decided to go two disks. I installed XP on one disk alone and then removed it and installed FC5 on another disk. They both work well as single boot drives, so I thought I would do what danleff recommended and try making the XP the maser, the FC5 disk the slave, and putting grub on the XP disk. Using the prescribed chroot method from rescue and then the grub install, I got the following return. /dev/hdb1 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive. Upon reboot, I get XP only. Is this due to my somewhat unorthadox approach to seperate installs on seperate solitary disks? Or was it successful and I'm ust not seeing the boot menu for some reason?

    FC5 format error during install

Thanks for your insights and opinions regarding XP. So far, unfortunately, its the only OS that I can get working on my machine. I used disk management to go in and delete the F disk as well as the two areas that the Fedora install created. The partition table indicated one partition...a C: partition of the size I stipulated...100 GB, leaving approximately 56 GB unused where I still am attemtping to put FC5. I say still because after doing as you suggested, I again received the same error causing FC5 installation to abort. SO, at this writing, while I am at work, my system is busily re installing XP after re-partitioning and formatting(NTFS). If the FC5 format attempt fails again, I will abandon NTFS and use the FAT32 file structure. As always, your assistance is greatly appeciated. John

    FC5 format error during install

Upon closer examination, it appears that Windows assigned the remaining space as drive letter F even though I never knowingly asked it to. All I stupulated was 100GB of space to be partitioned.....so, I am prepared to either re-install Windows again or re-size upon someones recommendation...hmmm....didn't have this problem on the last install on another machine.

    Installing madwifi

I am attempting to get my NetgearWG311T PCI wireless card to work. I have downloaded the RPM madwifi-0.0.0.20060520-6.lvn5.i386.rpm and copied it to my home folder. Next I used the command rpm -i (filename) and received the following message: warning: madwifi-0.0.0.20060520-6.lvn5.i386.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID a109b1ec error: failed dependencies: madwifi-kmod >=0.0.0.20060520 is needed by madwifi-0.0.0.20060520-6.lvn 5.i386 So, after unsuccessfully trying to find out about dependencies and how to resolve whatever I must be missing, I tried to install the package using yum via the following command: su -c 'yum install madwifi' While the results were not successful, it did result in attempting to load the "installonlyn" plugin, followed by "Setting up Install Process", Setting up repositories, core, and then "Canot find a valid baseurl for repo: core So, I realize these are two different directions to try to install a package...my first attempt. If anyone can assist me in either direction, RPM or yum, I would be most grateful. Danleff...if it happens to be you that responds, I sent you email last week regarding a helpful post you gave me trying to isntall the loader. Your help was moast appreciated! I will be out of the country for a week as of 6/5/06, so bear with my response time lag. Sincerely thankful in advance, John

    Installing madwifi

Thanks Dan... The machine I am trying to set up wirelessly is a dual boot machine. Since I can acces the internet in Windows, I have been downloading the things I need there to my thumb drive and then copuing them into Linux. So, to be clear, I CAN access the internet via Windows, just not via Linux.

    Installing madwifi

Thanks again Dan....okay, a few more things for clarification might be helpful. 1) I have the docs for yum, but it seems somewhat unclear to me...when a yum command is issued, the docs say it "downloads" the proper packages etc. Since I am trying to make a wireless system work, I obviously don't have access to the internet yet. Am I chasing my tail here issuing a command that "downloads" the proper package when I in fact don't even have access to the internet yet? 2) I ran the uname-r cmd to determine my kernel. It returned 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5. When I viewed the livna repository, I didn't see a madwifi kernel module-package. In this case, I've sen documentation that refers to me rebuilding the kernel module package myself. Is that what I need to do since yum can't find the proper package I need? John

    Installing madwifi

Thanks Dan.... After re-reading the rror message, I finally understood what it meant (I think). It referred to a missing k-mod file. This translates to kernel module, which is found in the livna repository. Unfortunately, the error message sais I needed one >= 20060520. I could only find ones dated 200601 something. I'll keep looking for the proper kernel module, which again is what I assume the RPM error message is referring to. Thanks again Dan... John
  13. Hello forum....I too am a newbie with Fedora 5 installed on a single drive (120gb with about 1/2 partitioned to XP pro) and the rest dedicazted to FC5. I was able to boot into the loader which prompted me to select the OS I wanted. For about one day, it worked flawlessly. I could choose XP or Linx. Then, today, after hitting "any" key to get to the loader, the system ignored my key press and always boots to Linux. WHile this is not a problem for me (grin), my wife desperately wants the access to XP on her system. Any ideas? I read the post about the timing issue for the boot loader and how to go to /boot/grub/menu.lst and change it from 10 to 20. Mine is currently about 3 according to the boot screen. When attempting to use cat to view the file, it says permission denied. My shell prompt currently displays my user name "ksclps@localhost ~]$ Trying to log in as root gets me a "incorrect" return. I have changed to password to root and entered that to no avail. Any help here would also be appreciated so that I may edit the timer. John
