Nope, that's not it - the automatic updates for Windows work even with the firewall on, but the AVG autodownload doesn't even work with the firewall shut down altogether. Moreover, it all started when NAV expired, not after I installed Sygate

Thanks for the heads up, Cormac! Appreciate it! As a matter of fact I wouldn't even mind paying for an Antivirus, just as long as it didn't come with a ton of bells and whistles that bogged down my machine...

Uh, yeah... :-) Searched for Norton and Symantec AND 'NAV', rebooted and it's almost, almost gone... :-) In fact I only hear the faintest of muffled screams in the background... One manifests itself in a message box that pops up when I start Word - you know the ole' familiar 'Norton yada yada yada doesn't support the Repair and Install feature'... :-) The only answers I've found on that one involves installing LiveUpdate... <ROFL> I think Joseph Heller must've written the Symantec Customer Support routines... Now The MS site explains that it's because the Norton Antivirus DLL is loaded. Well, I could fix that, if I just knew what it was named. Now I've ripped out the guts of NIS - All of its folders are gone and erased, all visible traces are eradicated from the Registry, all Norton toolbar options and ctlpanel entries. And whaddya know - the machine performs like a dream. Starts up much faster, shuts down much faster, generally seems to breathe easier... APC, AVG & Sygate are protecting me, the sun's shining and life's lookin' good...

Hi! After my Norton IE Security 2005 90 day license ran out, despite me renewing it (or at least PAYING for a renewal) NO automatic downloads seem to work for me. I can download anything I want (running AVG+Sygate FW) manually, but automatic downloads don't even reach the modem (there's not even a little blink). I've got the XP firewall turned off - haven't used it at all - don't trust it, so that's not the issue - rather I suspect a Symantec component is blocking it - a component that won't let me remove it btw... Any hints? /Carl

Hi all! After spending several days trying (with the aid of Symantec Support) to get LiveUpdate to start working again, installing the unstoppable Symantec eSupport app and jumping backwards through several hoops, I finaly tired and followed the course of action described by another forum user - I entered the registry and removed every single reference to Symantec. Or tried to. I then installed AVG Free and Sygate's firewall, so I could draw a sigh of relief that I was once again protected. However: 1) I couldn't get rid of the LEGACY registry entries referring to Symantec. What are they, anyone? 2) MS Word won't let me access my files anymore - Norton's still managing to annoy me. Is it enough to reinstall the Word templates, or can I hack the existing ones somehow? 3) I still can't remove the software directories. Please, anyone? Regards /Carl

I started with ZA (years ago) but quickly abandoned it once I tried Sygate's free personal edition. I've used Sygate ever since. When I got myself a new machine it had a 90 day Norton Internet Security 2005 on it, and it didn't make much noise, so I kept it. Until I tried to renew it, and paid for a license and LiveUpdate stopped working. The reply I get from Symantec was that LiveUpdate had become corrupt... My experience (25 years in systems development & management) is that the chance of a system file getting corrupted in a fully protected system at the EXACT same time as the subscription has to be renewed is... ah... slim. After having spend an inordinate amount of time trying to get it to work, I get the suggestion to reinstall. And it won't let me, the sysadm uninstall. At this point I'm quite fed up so I just wreak havoc in the registry, losing every reference to Symantec - I'll post a follow-up on that one - I need some help on that issue. Either way - now I'm running Sygate and AVG - both of which are easy to install despite the automatic updates still not working properly. Sygate, in other words... :-) Carl
