My family is expanding our business, we are going to have 8-10 employees that need access to their own computer and within 2 years 20-30 employees that need access. We will manufacture generators, most of the computers will just be used for seeing inventory via SaaS or tracking out in and out shipments, thats sort of thing. My 1st thought is just get each person a desktop with ubuntu, because I can maintain them myself and really 10 computers isnt that many, also we don't have an IT pro, I'm as close as it gets (not very close). but someone told me that we could get a single decent server, and just have access points at each office and that it would be fairly easy to maintain and cost effective. Is that possible? I can hold my own when it comes to desktops, but I don't know anything about server hardware. what runs the video for each terminal? what are these terminals called? I really have to find a solution, so any help would be great, thanks mike

Hey there I just got Cold war for linux in the mail yesterday and got it installed but when i try to run it says Code: Cold War encountered a problem while it was running. There are a few possible causes for this failure.Make sure all drivers (OpenGL, sound) are properly installed. The following information might be useful for technical support:Exit code: 0x00000021 well i disabled sound so thats not it, and glxgears runs fine so i dunno, any ideas? Ubuntu edgy nvidia 7800 - recent drivers (1.0-9631)

actually its not really dual boot prob its a windows problem but i thought maybe it could tie in cuz i use windows only as a backup. + you guys a really helpful. please go easy on me, i wouldnt normally ask this but im stumped. I just bought a secondary sata hard drive for giving completely to ubuntu then I was gonna use my primary as half windows half fat32 for backup. well I install windows like ive one a billion times, everything goes fine till the end and the very last step where it says "saving settings" - i mean like on the last min then it reboots before its suppose to, then it gives me the safe mode start options. I realize this is really for a windows forum.....but I like you all better. thanks

ok i'll check all those things. but 1st, last night i was screwin around and thought to see if i could even get ubuntu to install on the 1st drive and the installer crashed saying this We're sorry; the installer crashed. Please file a bug report at https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+filebug and a developer will attend to the problem as soon as possible. To help the developers understand what went wrong, include the following detail in your bug report, and attach the files /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/syslog, and /var/log/partman: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 130, in ? install(sys.argv[1]) File "/usr/bin/ubiquity", line 55, in install ret = wizard.mun() File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 264, in run self.progress_loop() File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/ubiquity/frontend/gtkui.py", line 538, in progress_loop raise RuntimeError, ("Install failed with exit code %s; see " RuntimeError: Install failed with exit code 1; see /var/log/installer/syslog and /var/log/syslog i'm gonna try pullin the second drive like you said and check my connections

nope thats not it... i'm starting to think its the cd cuz theres are some hairline scratches in it, i mean pretty small, but maybe enough to effect something, i just would have thought it would have had a read error.
-
ok thanks i'll try that when i get off work, whats really annoying about this, is that I almost never use windows, it haunts me even after I've left it. lol

the 1st hard drive had ubuntu and windows in it, I just used the xp installer and deleted all partiitions then chose quick format. the 2nd one that I havent messed with remains in factory condition, not formated no partitions. Edit: oh i was just gonna make the 1st hard drive entirely ntfs for now and setup the fat32 later

I'm dual booting ubuntu and xp and using grub well I went to do a repair on windows and accidentally installed it a second time in the same partition (don't ask). so now I have a windows and a windows.0 folder, anyway I know how to get rid of my extra windows but it is still in the boot menu (not the 1st menu but after I choose windows at grub it then gives me 2 choices of win). so...how do i get rid of that extra one thanks in advance

sure I could leave it alone....but why not risk screwing up something badly just to fix something trivial? thanks dan Edit: worked like a charm [Edited by loserboy02 on 2006-07-15 02:20:56]

Edit: ok someone is tellin me i need autopackage so ill let you know what happens.

hey danleff thanks for the reply, I have the version installed from the repos, but its an older version and not many servers are running it anymore, and i'm pretty new at all things linux (in fact you helped me choose ubuntu) so I don't know how to do the source stuff, but i'm looking at the link you gave me to see what I can do anyway....if you find anything easier let me know thanks

Hey everyone, I'm going to be switching to linux here soon and i'm just trying to figure out which one would be best for me. the reason i'm doing this is because ms has mad me angry for the last time with their wga crap. it's going to be on my home pc and i'd like one that has the most compatibility to programs or hardware designed for ms (or progs that work just as well) I play alot of games on it also, but at 1st im just gonna partition some extra space for linux so i'll still have win if i need. I had a little experience playing with red hat some years back but hopefully its a little more user friendly than that now. wondering if you guys had any suggestions thanks. oh also if theres a good one that will do the bootable live cd or whatever that would be nice to try too.
-
Well I did Ubuntu....and its sweet, thanks for the advice... ill post the rest of my questions and what not somewhere else.
-
Awesome, I think you've answered all my questions... until i choose one then ill have plenty more for you anyway now im gonna go make my decision based on what youve told me thanks alot for your help

everything you said about the programs is perfect, in fact i use openoffice on my pc now what i really meant about compatability was like my dv camera, and usb storage and such now on the hardware part.... i know someone is gonna make fun of me for this but i dont know exactly everything i have even though i built the comp myself, i guess ill just go through everything i know and then you can ignore what doesnt matter and tell me if i missed anything. AMD athlon 64 3700 1 gig corsair ram geforce 7800 pci-xpress built in sound and lan asus motherboard, i forget which one running xp pro (counterfeit says ms all of a sudden) 80 gig sata drive - not in raid, western digital i think generic dvd burner uh i think thats about it oh and a big fat pretty antec case with a freaky air ducting system My needs for it arent really important right now, i just want to learn to use proficiently, but i will be doing basic home office stuff with it, nothing that openoffice can't do. I would like to get back into to some graphical design. I like games, if i could play graphically intense games on it that would be nice. Honestly I just wanna do my part to increase linux's part in the home pc market, and since i cant program the least i could do is throw a few dollars at someone who can. Also thanks very much for the helpful reply, i was looking into Suse and Ubuntu, but thought i would talk to somone 1st to narrow it down, like you said there are so many.
