USB Device Not Recognized when using USB extension

Hi, This is a common problem encountered by many people of late. Unfortunately no one can identify exactly what causes it and as far as I know no one has been able to find a fix for it yet. I am currently trying to solve the same problem with a friends PC, he gets the message every time he plugs his Ipod shuffle in.
