  1. That's great! The link to compatDB was given to me by the admin of www.modfree.org, so I'll do what a Novice does best and see what's happening. Thanks very much for the replies and for compatDB!

    ATA vs PATA?

Wilhelmus! Excellent link, thank you very much!
  3. It's ok, I've nailed the bookmark to my monitor with blue-tack! edit* I should say that the layout of the site is absolutely fine, it's only the logo. I feel a bit embarrassed now I'm getting used to it! Take your time with any changes, it's just the witterings of a 44 year-old Novice that still has a bit of a dither on new sites.=============================>

    Notification of replies to posts

    Got it...thanks!
  5. Hey Phil! I just had a quick read of the Wiki: Does this mean it would be ok to show excerpts of topics as long as they are not altered. If they are altered, then these alterations also have to comply with LGPL? Does that sound reasonable enough for a Novice? Thanks for the reply!
  6. I'm not sure if the admin at my Favorite Forum would be into doing this, as at MajorGeeks there appears to be nothing on Linux? This does appear to be a monumental idea and achievement 10+10!! Is the LGPL the same as the GPLv2 and v3? I mean, is it involved with the FSF and the same kind of intentions? All the best!
  7. Is there something like a "Replies to my posts" board to help me navigate through...errr......my replies? THANKS!!!
  8. Hi to all the CompatDB gang! Nothing serious really: Being new to the site, I have to keep looking to find out which site I'm on! The heading of the site doesn't stand out at all? See, I told you it wasn't much. What a gihumunginormous site! OMFG as they say! Great stuff, well done indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

    Help Please

Hi krazy! I'm a Novice too and I'm here getting a Q+A, but I think I can help. I can see a couple of choices: 1. If you want to keep the computer you have now, get a single-bay height card that supports DX9.0C and either keep, or better sell, the x850xt(ATI?). You should be able to change a graphics card in a Gayeway: It is worth remembering that there are no DX10 games or applications on the market yet, so don't buy a DX10 card!! 2. Sell the Gateway (0r better still, give it to a family member as I don't think they are worth much 2nd hand), as it will very likely be difficult to replace the motherboard unless perhaps you give it back to them to do? I would not recommend that you decide to do this. I would recommend finding a friend to help you put together the bits for a new computer, and then build it together! If you chose 2, you will get a much more powerful computer for your money, you won't have to also take a lot of package deal bits that you don't want, and you'll have a heart-stopping experience doing the build PLUS you'll learn a lot about the computer which will then be yours, and not Gateways! Get stuck in there mate. There will always be people like myself around to help you out! Let me know what you decide. Hope this helps. All the best! :-)

    ATA vs PATA?

Hi Danleff! Seagate Barracuda 80Gbytes ULTRA ATA 7200.10 S/N: 9QZ0VXFV ST 380215A P/N: 9CY011-30 ======================= Maxtor DiamondMax 20 80GB PATA ULTRA ATA STM3802110A S/N: 9LR42CY6 P/N: 9DN011-36 3.5 Series 7200.9 ======================= Caddy = StarTech DRW113ATABK (The spare drawer being the DRW113CADBK). ======================= This is the first time I've looked so closely at the drives, I usually just see the Gbytes part! I noticed it says on the drives: Use CSL only with an 80 Conductor cable. I am using a rounded cable at the moment but I have several others which I have tried with the caddy. The result is the same: The Seagate works, the Maxtor doesn't. Could you please tell me how to tell the difference between an 80 and a 40 conductor cable? Thank you for your reply. I look forward to hearing from you. All the best! :-)

    ATA vs PATA?

Is there any difference? I have a new 80G Maxtor PATA 133 drive that will not work in an IDE caddy I have just bought. I have a new 80G Seagate Ultra drive that works fine in the caddy, just the same as all my old IDE drives. I am using Linux Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn). Any ideas would be much appreciated. Many thanks! :-)
