  3. Digit-Life Review: ATI RADEON HD 4870 X2 2x1024 MB Excerpt: "First of all, it was planned to oppose GeForce GTX 280 with CrossFire configurations based on two separate HD 4850 or HD 4870 cards. Then the company presented a dual-GPU solution on a single PCB, the RADEON HD 4870 X2. We've already published its preview with several tests. Now it's time for a sterling article with theoretical data, synthetic tests, and an expanded set of games." 7. -------- THERMAL PASTE ROUNDUP AUGUST 2008 ( -at -) APH NETWORKS -------------------- Dear Media friends, APH Networks has published a new review that your readers might enjoy. A post in your site's news section would be greatly appreciated! * Title: Thermal Paste Roundup August 2008 ( -at -) APH Networks * Description: It has been over a year since we've reviewed thermal paste. With the previous presented to us being Arctic Cooling's excellent MX-2 thermal compound in July 2007 and reviewed August 2007 -- it was, no doubt, excellent thermal paste; and were able to achieve a score of 8.1/10 on our Number Ratings. Thermal paste may seem so insignificant -- it can be easily overlooked to an extent that many people simply buy what they've heard of the most, and not necessarily what is the best. Thermal paste may 'seem' to be all the same with each other; but each is actually quite unique with different companies making different formulas for synthetic compounds or metal compounds. But all serves the same purpose to allowing better transfer between the cooled device and the cooler; filling microscopic valleys in surfaces that has microscopic imperfections to maximize heat transfer efficiency at its source. Today, we will be looking into several different brands of claimed 'high performance' thermal paste and see which one performs the best. Our four-way competition today includes the 'classic' Arctic Silver 5, our previous winner Arctic Cooling MX-2, the price competitive Tuniq TX-2, and the NT-H1 paste from silent PC enthusiasts' favorite company Noctua. * Link: http://aphnetworks.com/reports/thermal_paste_roundup_august_2008 [1] * Image: http://aphnetworks.com/report/thermal_paste_roundup_august_2008/005.JPG [2] Thanks for your support. 11. TechwareLabs has published a review of the LukWerks WiLife Security System. Here's a clip from the review: Quote: Interested in getting a fully featured security system but don't want to pay over $300 for it? If so, then WiLife's Digital Video Security System might be worth a look. One of the featured items at CES earlier this year, was the WiLife Security System. WiLife, a sub company of Logitech, now offers wireless security for your entire home. Featuring three different types of cameras each for different instances, these include your standard indoor camera, weather-proof outdoor camera, and even a spy camera found in an alarm clock. Now I'm sure most of you guys just got some wild ideas of what to do with that spy camera, I know I thought of a few. Read on to see how the WiLife truly performs. 14. Hi all, We have just published a review of Samsung SyncMaster XL30 LED Backlit LCD. If you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/08/18/samsung-syncmaster-xl30/1* *Picture: http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/08/samsung-syncmaster-xl30/7-4.jpg* *Quote: *Ultimately, however, it's those professionals -- graphic artists, publishers and the like -- that stand to get most out of this wonderfully colour-accurate monitor. If sufficient budget is available, we doubt the XL30 will disappoint for those users. For everyone else, we recommend you plump for a more conventional and affordable 30-incher and if you want to spend a little bit more, it's still well-worth considering the NEC LCD3090WQXi * *Cheers guys! 15. Hi all, We have just published a feature about Zen and the HFX Mini HTPC case. If you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/08/16/hfx-mini-htpc-case/1* *Picture: http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/08/hfx-mini-htpc-case/fp_img.jpg* *Quote: *If you compare it to other passively cooled HTPCs on the market, like the Hush PC UK-E1200 or the Hoojum Cubit PCs then it is undoubtedly cheaper -- if only by a few hundred pounds. Moreover by shopping around on eBay for the internal components you can knock off considerably more of that price. What you get in overall quality is not that much different from the competitors' machines. The case is well-built, all sorts of necessary bits and bobs are included, and some aspects of it are very cleverly and well designed indeed. On the other hand, I get the feeling that mCubed is not entirely honest with its customers. It is definitely not trying to rip people off, the price of most of its components being commensurate with their high quality. But the riser cards seem rather extravagantly priced, you need to buy a lot of "optional" extras to make for a complete kit which tots up the price, and while being squarely pitched at the consumer whose only previous experience has been to put together a generic PC, it becomes quite obvious that at least a medium level of modding skill is required to make a decent system. * *Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net
  16. gtkaml is an XML parser that extends the Vala.Parser and transforms all your tags into a valid Gtk+ UI class described in the Vala language. Features * compact XML syntax for describing Gtk widgets * code 'islands' (written in Vala) for signal handling and other methods/signals/properties/ in your widget class (so you don't modify the generated code ever) * doesn't depend on an external library at run-time (other than Gtk+) * much more readable than the usual UI boilerplate (e.g. you don't need to worry about temporary variable names, or ever write hundreds of lines of code/markup) gtkaml 0.2.2.0 requires glib-2.0, vala-1.0 >= 0.3.5, libxml-2.0, and gtk+-2.0 Changes: * upgraded to valacompiler 0.3.5 * fixed an issue that lead gtkaml considering a misspelled tag with no content/subtags to be an attached attribute and then ignore it Full release notes: http://code.google.com/p/gtkaml/wiki/ReleaseNotes Downloads: http://code.google.com/p/gtkaml/downloads/list Example: http://code.google.com/p/gtkaml/wiki/Example Future Goals: http://code.google.com/p/gtkaml/wiki/DesignGoals#Future_Goals Regards, Vlad Grecescu _______________________________________________

  20. Corsair 2GB DOMINATOR DDR3 2133MHz Memory Kit Last month on July 1st, Corsair Memory announced the immediate availability of a new DOMINATOR DDR3 memory kit running at 2133MHz. The launch of this memory kit made it the world’s fastest DDR3 memory solution in production volume, a title that it still holds over a month later. Read on to see how this kit does on an EVGA nForce 790i SLI Ultra motherboard at 2135MHz. Quote: "The Corsair TW3X2G2133C9DF memory kit is a very impressive memory kit that was found to be 100% stable at these insane clock frequencies. Running at 2133MHz is no joke and it's still beyond what most platforms today are capable of running. To be honest the nForce 790i SLI is pushed nearly to its limits running memory this fast!" Title: Gigabyte EP45-DS3L & EP45T-DS3R ( -at -) Phoronix Direct Link: http://www.phoronix.com/vr.php?view=12757 Summary: "Intel's P45 Chipset was released this summer along with the P43, G43, and G45 Chipsets as the mainstream Eaglelake alternative to Intel's current flagship X48 Chipset. Though over the older X48 motherboards, the P45 has the advantages of using Intel's newer ICH10 / ICH10R Southbridge and support for up to 16GB of DDR2/DDR3 memory, which is double that of what's supported by the X48. Today we are looking at two Intel P45 motherboards compliments of Gigabyte with their EP45-DS3L and EP45T-DS3R. The EP45-DS3L and EP45T-DS3R are just two of Gigabyte's motherboards bearing the P45 Chipset but in total they have eight different motherboards using this version of the Eaglelake Chipset." Quote "Sunbeamtech has left a clear presence in the hardware industry by developing a huge line of products and since a year or so they created a whole new premium series to offer cases and coolers. What we are looking at today is their Tuniq 3 casing which offers their patented 3D Core-Fan Bracket, tool free drive installation and two cold cathodes underneath the bottom to finish it off." [1] http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-August/msg00006.html == Fedora Test Day: Encrypted Installs & Plymouth James Laska informed us[1] that the Fedora QA team is organizing a test day specifically for working on encrypted installs and plymouth (the replacement for rhgb). "There will be a cast of testers and developers on hand between 8am - 5pm EDT (12:00 - 21:00 UTC) to help guide testing, answer questions, triage and troubleshoot issues." [1] http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-announce/2008-August/msg00005.html == ACL Changes and New Package Group Policy Casey Dahlin wrote[1] about the new Fedora Account System group policy, implemented "to encourage greater openness in the community while containing newer members until they have earned the trust of the community". The full text includes a discussion of the changes that have been made. [1] http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-August/msg00007.html == Important Infrastructure Announcement == Paul Frields announced[1]: "The Fedora Infrastructure team is currently investigating an issue in the infrastructure systems. That process may result in service outages, for which we apologize in advance. We're still assessing the end-user impact of the situation, but as a precaution, we recommend you not download or update any additional packages on your Fedora systems." [1] http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-August/msg00008.html = Planet Fedora = In this section, we cover the highlights of Planet Fedora - an aggregation of blogs from Fedora contributors worldwide. http://planet.fedoraproject.org Contributing Writer: Max Spevack == Tech Tidbits Kushal Das announced[1] a new version of the liveusb-creator GUI application. Separate from the livecd-tools and livecd-iso-to-disk application, liveusb-creator is packaged in its own RPM. Kushal writes, "liveusb-creator version 2.7 for Linux is released... Now feel free to create liveusb images for your friends and for the special one." Nigel Jones discussed[2] a variety of wiki improvements that have been deployed. This is a three-round improvement process. Nigel said of the first two rounds "At the request of the documentation team we enabled searching by default on various namespaces, of course, you most likely won't notice it at all. Round 2 of wiki improvements start tomorrow, this is the exciting one. We are trashing the current authentication method IN THE BIN! No more htaccess prompts... What's going in its place? The standard Mediawiki login prompt, it'll still be connected to FAS, it'll just look different." [1] http://kushaldas.in/?p=284 [2] http://nigelj.livejournal.com/8525.html == Artwork == Mairin Duffy gave us a look[1] at some of the proposed Fedora 10 artwork in the "gears" theme, which is a collaboration between her and Nicu Buculei. [1] http://mihmo.livejournal.com/60026.html == Features == Two interesting posts about the Fedora feature process this week. First, John Poelstra discussed the Fedora 10 feature status[1], saying: "Feature freeze for Fedora 10 is this coming Tuesday, August 19, 2008. The current list for Fedora 10 is growing with more waiting to go through the acceptance process here. At feature freeze all features must be significantly completed and testable or they will have to wait for Fedora 11. During this release cycle I collaborated with Paul Frields who greatly improved the documentation explaining the process. We also got help from the Fedora art folks to make the process diagram better. We also changed the categories used to classify feature pages in an attempt to bring greater clarity there." In a separate post[2], Paul Frields mused on the benefits of changing the way new Fedora spins are handled from a feature point of view. 25. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Visual) - GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 280 Graphics Card QUOTE: "The other day we looked at the GTX 260 from GIGABYTE. Today we’re going to be looking at the slightly more expensive GTX 280 version from them. Since launch, we haven’t really seen any companies do much with the GTX 280. While a few have come overclocked, we have found that they’ve all stuck to the reference cooling option. Today we’re going to be looking at the GTX 280 from GIGABYTE which follows the reference design down to a tee. The good news is that the price is also extremely competitive and for the most part the overclocks a lot of companies offer can be achieved by using a program like Rivatuner on your stock card."
