  2. Hi all, We have just published a review of the *Akasa Omega* system chassis - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2008/08/14/akasa-omega-review/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/08/akasa-omega-review/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"The Akasa Omega has been a pleasure to work with from start to finish, and I feel it is without a shadow of a doubt, the single easiest case to build a system into currently available. The brilliant motherboard tray design makes such a huge difference when building your system, and for those who frequently tinker inside their machines it's of enormous advantage. The build quality throughout the Omega is equally excellent, and is a breath of fresh air after so many recent cases we've reviewed have struggled to just get panels to line up properly. However, there are some short falls, and one of them is the poor stock thermal performance. The Omega's out of the box cooling configuration is only one or two degrees better than the Mirage, and way off of other cases we've recently looked at like the Lian Li Tyr X2000. However, the stock cooling is extraordinarily quiet and as we've seen, four 120mm fans and a fanbus can happily resolve this issue, leaving you with an excellent case with high performance cooling and low noise levels. Value is one area where the Akasa Omega does struggle a little though, especially in justifying itself over its painfully similar siblings - the Akasa Eclipse-62 and the Mirage-62. The former can still be found for around £90 and the latter for a few pennies under £100. In comparison the Omega, with it's precut 120mm fan mounts and aluminium door sell for around £125, although while it's true you're getting less aluminium, you have to consider the time and effort it would take to cut the four 120mm fan mounts yourself, so we can see the justification for the higher cost. In comparison to other cases on the market, we feel you'd struggle to find such an adaptable and more importantly quiet aluminium case for similar money, and in this instance the Omega really is in a league of its own. While Akasa might not have changed a great deal between the Mirage and the Omega, there wasn't a great deal that actually needed changing. With the inclusion of extra mounts for fans or water cooling radiators, Akasa has ticked almost every box for whatever setup you might want to fit into your system, and while it might not have a pre-cut case window (although they are available separately), the Omega simply oozes class and quality. In fact, it really only slips up on its stock cooling performance. It's not showy, flashy or brash - it just gets on with the job of being your case. Simply put, the Akasa Omega is a fantastic case, and comes very highly recommended."/ * *Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net
  3. Hi all, We have just published a review of *Code of Honor 2: Conspiracy Island* for PC - if you could post a link on your site that would be very much appreciated. *Link:* http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2008/08/14/code-of-honour-2-conspiracy-island/1 *Picture:* http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2008/08/code-of-honour-2-conspiracy-island/fp_img.jpg *Quote: */"The real problem with Code of Honor 2 isn't the bad graphics, though those are the first thing anyone will notice. Poor graphics we can cope with. Not every game has to have huge polygon counts and Procedurally Generated Dynamic Mega-texture-awesomeness -- but good games do have to have / /something. They have to have a hook that can draw people in and make them want to play more. //Code of Honor 2 doesn't have that. Utterly boring and bland and far too easy in the singleplayer game, a quarter-baked and shallow experience on the multiplayer side, / /Code of Honor doesn't really do anything right and is doomed to soon reside in the bargain bin. There are two type of games to find in bargain bins though. There are old or unappreciated games that are still very much worth playing and then there's stuff that just couldn't survive in a capitalist market due to a stunning lack of worth. If you've read the review this far and still can't figure out which one we think / /Code of Honor 2 is then this is probably the game for you." /* *Cheers guys! Tim Smalley www.bit-tech.net
  4. Hi everyone, Having covered thermal compound from a few different companies over the past year or so, today we take a look at an offering from a relatively new kid on the block. Gelid Solutions is a Hong Kong-based company (with Swiss management) looking to enter the world of PC cooling products, from system fans through to their first product and the subject of today's review, their GC-1 thermal compound offering. We take a look to see how it performs. Gelid Solutions GC-1 thermal compound review "Each tube of GC-1 thermal compound contains 5 grams of paste in a pretty standard tube. As we just mentioned (and as a rather nice addition to the package), an applicator for the compound is also provided to help spread it over whatever surface you are applying it to. Speaking of applying this thermal compound, it really couldn't be easier - The paste itself is just the right consistency to make applying the correct amount simple, and spreading it via the included applicator ensures that being left with a thin and even layer of thermal compound is simplicity itself. With this in mind, this GC-1 thermal compound is easily one of the best we've tested as far as actual application of the paste goes." http://www.elitebastards.com/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=606&Itemid=27 As always, a news post on your site would be hugely appreciated, and we guarantee to reciprocate by posting any news items received from yourselves. 5. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Casing & Cooling) - XIGMATEK HDT-SD964 CPU Cooler QUOTE: "With a trio of heatpipe direct touch CPU cooler reviews under our belts, I can definitively say that the tech is quickly catching on and spreading like wildfire. I am standing strong behind my statement from the last review of a H.D.T. cooler that I think this is the direction most CPU heatsinks will go in the future; much like the way nearly all CPU coolers use heatpipes nowadays. Today we are going to take a look at the HDT-SD964 from XIGMATEK. Unlike all of the Heatpipe Direct Touch (H.D.T.) coolers we have looked at thus far, this cooler does not use a 120mm fan. The HDT-SD964 uses a 92mm fan and is a little shorter than the others. This will allow the cooler to be placed in smaller enclosures like 4U server chassis’ and equal sized media center cases." 8. August 13th 2008 As part of the August release of the regularly scheduled Microsoft Updates, there are currently eleven patches being released; six with the maximum rating of Critical and related to the Windows operating system and five with the maximum rating of Important that are related to Office. We have used AOK to test for the Windows patches It should be noted that patch MS08-047 relates to VISTA. The other five relate to XP (SP1/2/3) Here is a brief summary of the patches that affect the Microsoft Windows operating system; 1) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-045 Description: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (953838). This security update resolves five privately reported vulnerabilities and one publicly disclosed vulnerability. All of the vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if a user views a specially crafted Web page using Internet Explorer. 2) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-046 Description: Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows Image Colour Management System Could Allow Remote Code Execution (952954). This update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the Microsoft Image Colour Management (ICM) system that could allow remote code execution in the context of the current user. 3) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-047 Description: Vulnerability in IPsec Policy Processing Could Allow Information Disclosure (953733). This update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the way certain Windows Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) rules are applied. 4) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-048 Description: Vulnerability in IPsec Policy Processing Could Allow Information Disclosure (953733). This update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in the way certain Windows Internet Protocol Security (IPsec) rules are applied. This vulnerability could cause systems to ignore IPsec policies and transmit network traffic in clear text. 5) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-049 Description: Vulnerabilities in Event System Could Allow Remote Code Execution (950974). This update resolves two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows Event System that could allow remote code execution. 6) Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-050 Description: Vulnerability in Windows Messenger Could Allow Information Disclosure (955702). This security update resolves a publicly reported vulnerability in supported versions of Windows Messenger. As a result of this vulnerability, scripting of an ActiveX control could allow information disclosure in the context of the logged-on user. Note: These are not all of the patches that have been released by Microsoft today as the following only apply to Microsoft Office products; * Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-042 * Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-041 * Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-043 * Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-051 * Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-044 We have used the ChangeBase AOK Workbench to analyse each of the Windows patches against a sample of approximately 700 unique application packages with the intention of providing some insight into the following questions; 1. What patches when released are likely to cause my applications to fail? 2. What patches contain files and settings shared by individual applications I am running? For clarity, a number of software vendors and developers use shared Microsoft code in their applications – for example subsets of IE7. Hence if this embedded code for example has a security issue that the patch is resolving the application will need checking by the software vendor or in house development team. 3. Which applications have a dependency on the software that has been updated? For example many applications use Internet Explorer as part of their functionality – say to produce a management report. If Microsoft update IE7 with a new patch this can cause problems when this action is carried out in the software application 4. What order should I test my applications? 5. What patches should I test most and why? Results The following table details the results from the ChangeBase AOK Patch Impact Analysis and includes information on what application packages in the sample portfolio; * What is the total number of applications affected by each patch? * What applications also include files and configuration data that were embedded in the patch update? * What applications had specific dependencies on changes includes in these updates Patch Total Issues identified –dependancies or shared code Apps Affected Number of application with Shared Code Number of application with Dependencies Status MS08-045 585 32% 3 235 MS08-046 12 <1% <1% N/A MS08-047 6 <1% <1% N/A MS08-048 20 <1% <1% N/A MS08-049 7 <1% <1% N/A MS08-050 9 <1% <1% N/A = Needs serious attention = Testing required = Minor concern Special Notes: * MS08-046 Security Update for Windows Server 2003 raised a specific driver issues with Fujitsu 4340 colour scanners (mscms.dll) * MS08-048 Security Update for Windows Mail raised a specific DLL conflict with Microsoft Digital Image software * MS08-050 Security Update for Windows XP raised an application conflict with Microsoft Messenger * Recommendations 1. Immediately test core applications affected by MS08-045 with dependancies, in this case on IE7 2. Ideally test all other applications affected by this patch with dependancies 3. Test applications with shared code for the new DLL/driver updates 4. Test applications using Fujitsu colour scanners/Microsoft Digital Image software and Microsoft Messenger as above Conclusion From the results derived from the ChangeBase AOK Patch Impact Analysis, it appears that the following patch updates could be deployed with relatively light testing and with an expected minimal impact on the application portfolio; MS08-46, MS08-47, MS08-48, MS08-49 and MS08-50. However, the Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 Update IE7 (MS08-045) includes files and configuration data that are a direct dependency for a large number of applications. This could mean that these applications may be adversely affected by the MS08-045 update and this patch should be fully tested prior to deployment to production environments. About the ChangeBASE Application Compatibility Lab ChangeBASE launched last month our ACL to allow us to rapidly assess the impact of new operating system code releases on a portfolio of applications. We have loaded c. 700 applications into this Lab and can use AOK to test the impact of new releases on these in minutes. 9. TITLE: Mtron Pro 7500 32GB SATA-II SSD MSP-SATA7525 ( -at -) Benchmark Reviews DESCRIPTION: Solid State Drives have become a subject of keen familiarity for Benchmark Reviews over the past year. After testing more than a dozen SSDs, I have watched the industry opinion of these cutting-edge products sway from luxury item to performance hardware necessity. While it cannot be denied that SSDs are still a pricey gadget best suited for the affluent enthusiast, there have been so many new developments that now cost is sharply on the decline while performance is continually rising. With prices being much more affordable, and performance having surpassed the best HDD products long ago, it all boils down to a good price-to-performance ratio. In this article Benchmark Reviews tests the premium MSP-SATA7525 SATA-II SSD from Mtron, a company that has become the grandfather of Solid State Drives. We dispel the myths associates with SSD products, and prove that Intel's ICH10 controller is still not ready for Solid State Drive performance. 10. Hello Technology News Community, I4U NEWS published a review of the OCZ Alchemy Elixir Gaming Keyboard. Quote from the review: "One common truth for many gamers is that their budgets are tight. Gamers are always on the lookout for good, low cost gaming peripherals that actually work. Today we are looking at just such a device from OCZ called the Alchemy Elixir Gaming Keyboard. One thing I have found on every gaming keyboard that I have ever owned is that after using it 8 to 10 hours a day five days a week simply typing -- not even counting gaming -- the keys start to wear after a while. To remedy this OCZ actually includes extra key tops to replace the most commonly used keys -- including the WASD keys used for movement, the spacebar, the shift key, and the arrow keys. Extra keys are a feature I have yet to see much more expensive gaming keyboards on the market offer." 11. A news post would be great. OCC has published a new review on the ATP ToughDrive Here is a quote from the review: Quote: "This is a very standard USB drive, without many special features that would make me recommend it over any other drive to one of my friends. The one added feature that makes this drive appealing is that it is intended to take some abuse. The SIP (System in Packaging) design makes the ATP ToughDrive waterproof, shock proof, and dust proof; pretty hefty claims in this day and age, but the testing backed that up. The clip used to attach the ToughDrive to your belt loop, back pack, or key ring appears fairly stout, and should make this drive a little easier to keep around. I know that I have lost more than my fair share of drives due to poor clips or attachment methods." 13. Hello Webmasters and News Posters, NEW CONTENT (Visual) - Single HD 4870 X2 vs Two HD 4870s on P45 QUOTE: "Just the other day, I was talking about how the HD 4870 X2 is a great card for P45 users. When I tested HD 4870 in CrossFire a few months back on both the P45 and X48, we noticed that the x8 / x8 configuration present on the P45 actually gave us a bit of a hit in performance. So, what we’re going to do today is chuck a pair of Sapphire HD 4870s into a P45 board and do a bunch of tests. We’re then going to pull those two cards out and stick in a single HD 4870 X2. We will run the same tests and proceed to compare. Since we’ve already looked at the cards themselves, we’re just going to get stuck straight into the benchmarking side of things. Let’s begin by taking a quick look at our testbed we’re using today, before getting stuck straight into the benchmarks." 14. Hi, We've just posted a new article on our website, Hardware Secrets. Title: ECS GeForce 9800 GTX+ Hydra Video Card Review Link: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/605 Category: Reviews Summary: ECS is going to release by the end of this month a kit called Hydra containing two GeForce 9800 GTX+ and one BigWater 760is water cooler from Thermaltake. Let’s take an in-depth look on Hydra. Here is a snippet: "ECS is very popular on the low-end segment, so we were really surprised to see this company launching a good high-end solution. The Hydra kit contains two GeForce 9800 GTX+ running at their default clock configuration and one Thermaltake BigWater 760is water cooler. The video cards come with the cold plates already assembled, so the only work you will have to do is to connect the hoses coming from BigWater to the video cards and fill the water tank with the coolant liquid that comes with the kit. We took an in-depth look on Hydra, check it out." A news post would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Gabriel Torres Editor-in-Chief Hardware Secrets http://www.hardwaresecrets.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Lafayette, CO - Canvastic LLC announces the update of their Macintosh and Windows software product, Canvastic, an integrated writing, graphics and publishing tool for students in grades K-8 to version 3.5. Developed by a former classroom teacher and computer coordinator, Canvastic was specifically designed with classroom use in mind and provides the correct mix of fun and productivity. The program allows students to publish pages, books, presentations and more. Version 3.5 continues and expands on the concept that software tools our students use to publish should be flexible. Teachers can customize their students' work environments even further than before. Many new features, refinements and fixes are included in this release. * Canvastic's new Audio Tool allows for voice recording, iTunes integration, and inserted sounds. The audio can be played in the document or in presentations. * Canvastic is now a Universal Binary application for use on PPC and Intel Macintosh computers. * Canvastic now supports transparency and color tones in its graphics and text. * Spell checking has become the best in the student publishing genre. Teachers can enable it or not. The "Learn" button can be enabled or not. Custom words and lists can be added then locked preventing students from corrupting the user dictionary. * New brush shapes provide more artistic control but still keep the choices to a manageable level, which is a Canvastic signature philosophy. * Digital photographs can be included easily, just use the new Open Folder... command and they come in, scale themselves to a useful size and are ready to be captioned and used. * Templates, backgrounds and art that support curriculum standards have been amended. These additions have all been designed to work with the "Grows With the User" feature that presents a customized interface for students at any level. This enhances the publishing experience and the time on task for students. Pricing and Availability: This is a free upgrade for all paid registered users. Registered users that did not pay for their copy of Canvastic may upgrade for 50 percent of the posted educational prices. Canvastic runs natively on Windows and Macintosh computers. It is purchased and downloaded from the web site. Pricing starts at $39 USD for a single user license. An unlimited school building license is $949 USD. There are various lab pack prices as well. Any school can continue to pilot Canvastic for up to 60 days on as many computers as desired. Many school districts still qualify for a free site license for 50 percent of their schools. 19. TechwareLabs has published a review on the Kingston HyperX 2GB DDR3-1600 RAM kit. Here's a clip from the review: Quote: Kingston provided two of their HyperX DDR3 1600MHz ram for your enjoyment. Jason Dumbaugh happily popped them into our TechwareLabs test rig and too it for a ride. Find out if the HyperX is as fast as it looks or if we blew out in the curves. If you are looking for some new sticks rated for speed then our review is a must read. 20. The infrastructure team has been working on a new group policy to encourage greater openness in the community while containing newer members until they have earned the trust of the community. As such, the following changes are being implemented: 1) Effective already: The "cv[censored]tras" group is now known as "packager." A bit more descriptive to start. 2) Effective in the next few days, members of "packager" formerly "cv[censored]tras" will only have access to packages they own or comaintain directly. 3) Users who need to modify packages distro-wide can be added to the "uberpackager" group. Anyone who maintains 8 or more packages or is a sponsor in the "packager" group is in this group already. IF YOU NEED THIS ACCESS, IT SHOULD COST NO EFFORT TO GET. All members of the group are sponsors for the group as well, and sponsoring another individual is intended to be a low-to-no effort process. If they haven't broken the entire distro recently, and you haven't seen them talking about "porting Fedora to internet" on devel-list, you should sponsor them as soon as they ask. 4) After the above changes have taken effect, all packages which currently have locked down Acls will be opened to the entire "uberpackager" group. If you are a maintainer and object to this, please reconsider. If upon reconsideration you still strongly object, there is a checkbox labeled "Open package during mass ACL open?" on your package's pkgdb page which will allow you to opt out of this change. Let me know if you have any questions. --CJD --

Which is the fastest 320 GB in the market? Check it out! Here is a snippet: "When buying a hard disk drive most users are only concerned with the drive's capacity. Should you also care about performance? We compared the performance of nine 320 GB SATA-300 hard disk drive models from Seagate, Samsung, Western Digital and Hitachi. Is there a big performance difference among them? Is it worthwhile to pay a little bit more and get a drive with a bigger buffer? If so, which is the fastest 320 GB in the market? Check it out!"
