    Announcing Orca v2.22.3

NOTE: Don't get this confused with the 2.23 development releases. This is for GNOME v2.22.3, not GNOME v2.23.x. =============== * What is Orca? =============== Orca is a free, open source, flexible, and extensible screen reader that provides access to the graphical desktop via user-customizable combinations of speech, braille, and/or magnification. Orca development has been led by the Sun Microsystems, Inc., Accessibility Program Office via continued engagement with its end users and generous contributions from the Mozilla Foundation and wonderful community members. The Orca v2.22.3 release is targeted for the GNOME v2.22.3 release and requires the latest at-spi/pyatspi infrastructure from GNOME v2.22.3, including atk and gail. gnome-applets 2.22.3

This is the final release in the 2.22 series of stable releases of the GNOME applets collection. Applets are small programs that run in the panel and provide information and readily-available assistance. This package contains applets that supplement the small core that comes with the GNOME panel. These include a keyboard switching applet, a trash applet and a system monitor. The only change since the 2.22.2 release is the improvement of the Vietnamese translation. You can download it from: http://download.gnome.org/sources/gnome-applets/2.22/ - Callum _______________________________________________

Hello, Version 2.22.3 of mousetweaks has been released and can be downloaded from: http://download.gnome.org/sources/mousetweaks/2.22/ bf36afbea857e49d32e5aefc29f94440 mousetweaks-2.22.3.tar.bz2 cd12c0a2e72e704255565778875ab59a mousetweaks-2.22.3.tar.gz ======================= What is mousetweaks ? ======================= The mousetweaks package provides the functions offered by the Accessibility tab of the Mouse control panel. It also contains two panel applets related to the mouse accessibility. More particularly: 1. It offers a way to perform the various clicks without using any hardware button. In this context, the Dwell Click panel applet can be used to choose what click type to perform. 2. It allows users to perform a secondary click by doing a click&hold of the primary mousebutton. 3. It provides the Pointer Capture panel applet. This applet creates an area on the panel into which the pointer can be captured until the user releases it with a predefined button and modifier combination. ============= What is new ? ============= New and updated translations: - [bg] Alexander Shopov - [vi] Clytie Siddall Best regards, Francesco Fumanti _______________________________________________

  5. AOOH-GAH -------- If you have no clue what GDM is, refer to the documentation links at the bottom of this announcement. The 2.20.7 release is a stable release of the GNOME Display Manager (GDM) program with the following bug fixes and improvements: - When GDM checks the XFree86_VT atom, it does not set it if it does not already exist. (Brian Cameron, Simon Zheng) - Free a pointer array via g_free instead of g_ptr_array_free, avoiding an assert on shutdown. (Frederic Crozat) - When reading in the Ba[censored]session configuration value, it now only accepts the first word as the script name and ignores the rest. Previously if you had any trailing spaces or other arguments, it would cause GDM to fail to read any value for the script. (Brian Cameron) - Use RBAC for Suspend when on Solaris. (Simon Zheng) - Translation updates (Theppitak Karoonboonyanan, Priit Laes, Nickolay V. Shmyrev, Clytie Siddall) Note: GDM2 was originally written by Martin K. Petersen . Much work has been done on GDM2 by George Lebl; and Brian Cameron. Note2: If installing from the tarball do note that make install overwrites most of the setup files, all except gdm.conf. It will however save backups with the .orig extension first. #ifndef GDM_DISABLE_DEPRECATED Note3: Note3 has been depracated ... #endif /* GDM_DISABLE_DEPRECATED */ Downloading: ============ Online Documentation - http://www.gnome.org/projects/gdm/ Latest Stable - http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gdm/2.20/ Latest Unstable - http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/gdm/2.22/ Bug Reporting - http://bugzilla.gnome.org in the "gdm" category. 12. Hello Technology News Community, I4U NEWS published a review of the Maximo iP-HS1 iMetal Stereo Headset for the Apple iPhone. Quote from the review: "Today we are looking at a headset for the iPhone called the Maximo iP-HS1 iMetal Stereo Headset. The headset has a built-in mic for making and receiving calls and a soft touch button that allows you to answer and hang up calls as well. Sound quality from the Maximo iP-HS1 iMetal Stereo Headset is good with nice deep bass and crisp highs and mids. The headset works well for calls with clear and legible speech on both sides of the conversation. The mic does pick up a bit of extraneous room sounds, but not so much to be a real issue." Coeur d'Alene (Idaho, USA) - DEVONtechnologies, LLC opens the grace period for free upgrades to DEVONthink 2.0 and offers all editions of DEVONthink as well as DEVONnote for 25 percent off exclusively for two days. Starting as of July 1st, 2008, everyone who buys licenses for DEVONthink Personal, Pro, Pro Office, or DEVONnote will be eligible for free upgrades to version 2.0 when it is released later this year. A regularly updated thread on the progress on version 2.0 can be found in the DEVONtechnologies user forum. For all other users who have purchased DEVONthink or DEVONnote before the grace period, we will have very reasonable upgrade prices. "With the opening of the grace period we now welcome all new users with a free ticket for the upcoming version 2.0," says Eric Bohnisch-Volkmann, President of DEVONtechnologies. He continues: "And for everyone who has been reluctant to jump on the DEVONthink bandwagon with version 2.0 on the horizon, we will add another incentive: On July 1st and 2nd we will give 25 percent on all editions of DEVONthink as well as DEVONnote - watch out for the promotion link on our home page and in my blog!" Availability And Pricing: All editions of DEVONthink require Mac OS X 10.4 or later and can be downloaded from www.devon-technologies.com. They can be test-driven for free for 150 hours of non-continuous runtime until they need to be properly licensed. DEVONthink Personal sells regularly for $ 39.95 USD in DEVONtechnologies' online shop, DEVONthink Pro for $ 79.95 USD and DEVONthink Pro Office for $ 149.95 USD. The Pro and Pro Office editions are also available as bundles with the Internet research assistant and alternative web browser DEVONagent. Background: Devonthink In today's world, everything is digital. From shopping receipts to important research papers, peoples' lives often fill their hard drives in the form of emails, PDFs, Word documents, multimedia files and more. Questions eventually pop up, like where to store all of this stuff? How to organize these very different file types, and even better, how to find the exact file one is looking for the second one needs it? It's almost as if one needs a second brain just to keep one's digital life straight. Enter DEVONthink: The solution to this digital age conundrum. It is a second brain, the one and only database for all digital files, be they PDFs, emails, Word documents or even multimedia files. Boasting a refined artificial intelligence, DEVONthink is exceedingly flexible and adapts to the user's personal needs. And if the files are not digital yet, paper capture support is already built-in (DEVONthink Pro Office only.) Users can use it as their document repository, their filing cabinet, their email archive, or their project organizer; DEVONthink can do it all. One can even collect and organize data from the web, enrich it with sound and movie files, and then export the finished product as a website or to an Apple Pages document to print. Or one can copy the content to an iPod! The possibilities are only as limited as the user's imagination. The Database For The Internet Age Because DEVONthink keeps all important data in one database, it doesn't matter where the data is physically located. DEVONthink uniquely integrates both local documents and live content from the Internet to keep all project-related information together in one place. No more folders full of loosely organized files and overflowing bookmark bars in Safari; with DEVONthink, the user seamlessly mixes local documents, clippings, and live web pages in one dynamic database. The Digital Workplace DEVONthink is not only a simple database, it's a flexible work environment, too, with powerful management features suited to any professional project. It provides the user with all the tools she or he needs to effectively work with documents. The integrated RTF editor makes it easy to write new documents, or the users can open documents in a third-party application. Intelligent Assistant DEVONthink is based on a powerful artificial intelligence (AI) architecture that helps organize and navigate information collections quickly and accurately. It assists its users with both filing documents and with finding similar items, and can help make connections that they might have missed on their own. It can even master huge data collections with a few simple clicks, saving time and aggravation. Share The Knowledge Finally, DEVONthink Pro Office allows to share the accumulated and organized knowledge. Users can post it to their websites, or they can let their coworkers access databases with a familiar search-engine like interface using standard web browsers. Depending on the network setup, it's even possible to search shared databases over the Internet. A JavaScript applet gives convenient access to the database also from the Apple iPhone. 21. When OCZ took over PC Power & Cooling, many people believed that they would stop marketing power supplies under their own brand name, however this has not been the case. Surprisingly their new units are not copies of PC Power & Cooling units as others would immediately assume, however even though their core design is different they are certainly sharing some design ethics. Today we will review one of the higher end new OCZ units, the EliteXstream 800W supply. The EliteXstream is a high performance PSU, designed to appeal to hardware enthusiasts who above all else value top electrical performance. http://www.driverheaven.net/reviews.php?reviewid=584 DriverHeaven and GamingHeaven News Mailer
  22. Hello fellow editors! Tech ARP ( http://www.techarp.com/ <http://www.techarp.com/>'>http://www.techarp.com/> ) has just posted the Foxconn BlackOps Tech Report. Quote - Foxconn is a relative newcomer to the motherboard business, at least in the retail segment. The truth of the matter is that thhey have been manufacturing motherboards for ages, albeit for other companies. They have only recently entered the retail market under the Foxconn brand name. Recently, they announced the availability of their new Foxconn BlackOps X48 Express motherboard. This is the latest addition to their Quantum Force series of motherboards, which are designed specifically for extreme overclocking. In fact, it is so packed full of features that Foxconn is proudly claiming that it is far superior to what was considered the ultimate overclocker's motherboard - the ASUS Rampage Formula. 23. *Title:* Zalman Reserator XT Liquid Cooling System Review ( -at -) HardwareLogic *Quote:* "Once considered the ultimate in geekdom, liquid cooling (also known as water cooling) has become almost mainstream. For those pushing the envelope, there's high performance (and high cost) kits from retailers such as Danger Den, DTek, or Swiftech. However, those kits usually require either a great deal of patience, or experience, during installation. For those less schooled in the art of exotic cooling, your choices are fairly limited. While there are no shortage of pre-fabbed kits, both internal and external, marketed at the novice, these kits usually forego quality to make themselves as easy to install and user friendly as possible." *Link:* http://hardwarelogic.com/news/137/ARTICLE/1318/2008-06-30.html

The alliance will validate and promote the availability of solutions that make it easy to deploy, integrate and manage Macs using Microsoft Windows-based solutions, thereby increasing user productivity, reducing total cost of ownership and increasing IT acceptance of Macs in the enterprise. Founding members include Atempo, Centrify, Group Logic, LANrev and Parallels. By leveraging the suite of capabilities that EDA solutions offer, enterprises can easily integrate Macs and achieve the same level of control, security, policy compliance and service that they currently have with their Windows platforms. "Interest in the Mac at large organizations is growing along with Apple's market share," said Bob O'Donnell, Vice President, IDC. "The challenge has been overcoming objections surrounding managing Macs within these corporate environments. Efforts that can make life easier for the IT professional and help the Mac become a more appealing and realistic alternative within the enterprise could help turn that interest into a stronger Mac presence." To further this initiative, EDA will be hosting a series of events, including webcasts and seminars, and will provide white papers, product information and other resources on the EDA website. "The popularity of the Mac among corporate end-users does not mean that there have to be headaches for IT administrators," said Peter Frankl, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of LANrev, one of the founding companies. "We are determined to help companies integrate Macs into their enterprise environments by reducing total cost of ownership and increasing IT acceptance of Macs in the enterprise." About the Enterprise Desktop Alliance EDA solutions are specifically designed to maintain the Mac experience for established users when interfacing with the Windows infrastructure. At the same time, by extending the standard Windows-based management environment, EDA solutions enable the Mac to be viewed and to act as a peer to Windows in an enterprise. EDA cross-platform solutions address: * Enterprise Data Protection - Atempo * Identity & Access Management - Centrify * File & Print Services - Group Logic * Systems Lifecycle Management - LANrev * Virtualization - Parallels For IT Management - The EDA suite of solutions enables IT departments to deploy, integrate and manage Macs throughout the enterprise by applying the same standard Windows-based management tools to support Macs as they do Windows. By leveraging a centralized, uniform management platform, administrators can deliver identical services and exercise the same controls for both Macs and Windows. Administrators can deliver the same standards of service, maintain uniform client configuration, enforce the same security controls, make the same sharepoints and print queues available, deliver the same disaster recovery, and enforce the same compliance policies for both Mac and Windows systems. And those same capabilities can be applied to the virtual version of Windows that runs on the Mac. For the Mac User - With the integration of the Mac into the Windows managed environment, Mac users are unaware that they are using Windows infrastructure. In fact, EDA improves the user experience by increasing system performance, providing single sign-on, delivering transparent update and patch management, and letting users retrieve lost files or their entire system without administrator intervention. EDA solutions extend the capabilities of the Mac through system virtualization, allowing the Mac to streamline access to Windows-only applications and productivity tools. IT professionals acquire the same management control of the virtual Windows system as the underlying Mac OS. The EDA solutions make it easier for Mac and Windows users to share files. By providing identical views of files on the same Windows server for both platforms, users avoid revision control problems so they can collaborate effortlessly. Users, regardless of platform, can be at the same revision level of Microsoft Office software, ensuring easy file exchange and further enhancing cross platform collaboration. Whether using a Mac or Windows on a Mac, access privileges and audit trails are all controlled by Microsoft Active Directory providing the users with a consistent network experience, without surprises or confusion. In file and print access, identity management, client management, disaster recovery, backup and virtualization, EDA ensures that administrators can extend their current control to the Mac. The Mac user reaps the benefits of tight integration and the organization saves in operational overhead while increasing security and user productivity. The Enterprise Desktop Alliance is a collaboration among enterprise-class software developers to make it easy to deploy, integrate and manage Macs in a sophisticated Windows-managed IT environment. By leveraging the suite of capabilities that EDA offers, an enterprise can easily achieve the same level of control, security, policy compliance, data protection and services that they exercise across Windows platforms. The cross-platform solutions available address Enterprise Data Protection - Atempo; Identity & Access Management - Centrify; File & Print Services - Group Logic; Systems Lifecycle Management - LANrev; and Virtualization - Parallels.
